It's a sad, sad ****ing day when a thread containing political debate and it's cat fuzz and GoAt talking the only thing resembling common sense.

Secrets? other countries already know these secrets. *the british* already run your terminals, that's the whole point. And it's well known that we have muslims aplenty, both of the extremist and otherwise variety, living and working here.

If it were, say, a spanish company, or a french company, or so on, there would have been no furore. This has been hijacked for political ends and general ****ing paranoid stupidity.

God damnit people, you made me agree with catfuzz.

How long did it take for you to form this "hijacked for political ends argument". Somehow, it just doesn't look good to be selling American ports to arabs after 9/11. Do you really want the bad guys holding the lock and keys to our country? Think about it, that's why everyone thinks Bush is stupid. As for the British, they are our allies... the last British terror attack on US soil was when? 1812? Who do you trust more, the guys who attacked us in 1812, or the guys who attacked us in 2001?

The arabs attacked you, yes? this is what you are saying?

Terrorists attacked us. They didn't come from any one country.

Call me biased. Call me racist. I don't trust this adminstration at all, and if anyone is gonna fu<k up something like selling our port authority to Arab nations then it is Bush and his people.

Bush says these Arabs weren't the ones who attacked us, right? Well neither were the Iraqis.

Sorry you didn't just say bad guys? Despite the quality of argument in this thread it is worrying when someone can oversimplify current issues to the extent when they sound like something from a comic book. Yes George Bush spews forth that **** and the American media arguably has some of the worst bias in the Western world.. but don't go mimicking it. If you think it is a matter of "goodies" and "baddies" then you show a gross misunderstanding of today's political climate.

Yes Bush is an idiot, but start treating any deal to do with Arab companies as an us-and-them issue and all you do is prove you've been swept away by his bull**** doctrine. I always had a shred of hope that the American people weren't convinced by Bush's propaganda and that rubbish about Neocon vs. Liberal was only found in the gutter press.. perhaps I was wrong?

For me it isn't about goodguys or badguys. Its about people I simply don't trust letting Arab companies run some ports. These people I don't trust have a pretty bad track record, so anything they do that is questionable concerns me, especially when it's so close to where I live. I have no reason to trust Bush or an Arab Company. And I don't think that lack of trust makes me ignorant of anything, it just makes me concerned. If someone buys me a broke down car which looks like a wheelbarrel with tires and there is a goblin sitting in the passenger seat with a police badge, I'm not necessarily gonna hop on in...nomatter how nice that goblin really is.

Shelf Adventure.
I can understand your qualms, being from NY and all, but pointing back to that link:

there was no acknowledgement that US-based companies are doing just the same kind of thing in other countries that Dubai Ports International was going to do here: running critical infrastructure under management contracts. Did you hear anyone in Congress call for a comprehensive global review of this issue? I didn't either. What's going to happen when those countries retaliate and kick out our contractors? Ooops, didn't think of that...

It would have pretty much been business as usual. Also, Dubai is not known for harbouring or incubating terrorists. In fact, the British Royal Navy are in the habit of docking ships there.

Aww, lookit that, you made me agree with Cat Fuzz too :D

This whole thing is just stoopid. All this flap is about "GET SOMETHING ON BUSH!!! ANYTHING!!!!"

This deal would have been harmless and it wasn't PORTS it was TERMINALS. Theres a difference. What we have here is a media spreading fear and paranoia so they can TRY and make Bush look bad. Combine that with Dems in Congress just foaming at the mouth with hatred for Bush AND a bunch of pansy assed, spineless Republicans who don't want to look bad because they know that the media will paint the picture and then tell everyone how to look at it and the American public with the collective attention span of a gnat will only believe what is spoon fed to them in a sound bite or newpaper headline.

If America ceases to exist sometime in the future, it will be because of pure ignorence and apathy.

Please don't mistake it for paranoia. I'm not gonna by a bomb booth shelter.

Weren't you complaining about that mind-set only a few months ago? :)

Don't confuse my lack of faith in the decisions my government is making for something else. I've already told you I'm biased anyway in this matter...Which is kinda irrelevant now that this thing has been deflected.
