Sounds like Epic knew where the mistakes were even before release when they start citing that things couldn't be fixed before release. They likely learned them back with the "beta demo" but chose to completely ignore them. I completely expect to see Mark Rein show up on Monday touting that UT3 was "released when it's done". Epic behaved like a child who touched the stove (beta demo), got burned, ignored the family's advice about what to do, and touched the stove again (retail release) only to get burned again. Then they threw a temper tantrum by throwing people off their forums, deleting stuff, and trying to ignore the issues up until now.

Doesn't a "postmortem" release like this means they're done working on it?

Two crappy patches, and that's all we get?

I am so glad, SO glad, I didn't bother with a new computer for this.

Thank you Epic - props for coming out and saying it. for finally letting us know that YOU know that things were not quite all right in the state of the UT3 universe... we appreciate your honesty and especially the frankness with which you revealed that which we have been saying all along... RUSHED, NOT FINISHED, NO POLISH, NOT ENOUGH TIME.

i know I speak for the REAL Unreal/UT fans out here when I say - next time remember, We would have waited...

now stop whining and lets get all those issues you didnt have time to finish and polish going for UT3.5 Xtreme Edition!

Who knows. They've said before that they're working on new content for the game to help it sell over time, but these speeches/interviews really make it sound like they're done with it. And I think we're well aware by now that what Epic says they'll do is rarely accurate.

I predicted v1.2 would be the last patch after WarTourist admitted there would be no client-side demo support. Only time will tell, I guess. D:

wow. It's been out how long, and they've given up on it? Four months?

I mean I guess you can't expect UT (circa 1999) level support anymore, where they made patches and content for four years afterward, but God damn. Rush job game, patches that didn't fix anything anybody actually wanted, and then they wash their hands of it. Guess it's just a happy coincidence GOW 2 was announced not a couple days before this little announcement, is it?

No, it doesn't mean that at all. A postmortem is a discussion about the game after it has shipped. It doesn't mean anything about the support being finished.

The occasion being a session at the developer's conference for the benefit of self-examining successes and mistakes in creating the game. The timing of the postmortem discussion was due solely to the fact that the GDC was underway this week and not because they decided it was 'finished'.

I could care less that they came out and said that it's "*ucked". I'm not gonna praise them for being up front about it. It does'nt help either way the state of the game is. They are still not up to what the UI features and options should've been even after the 2nd patch.

If these rocket scientists, game designers that makes hundreds of thousands of dollars off their fans cant implement a custom crosshair feature even after their 2nd patch, pffft, they aint getting my money.

I still have'nt bought the game and still dont care to unless I see a serious overhaul of the UI. I can't stand having to put my favorate mutators in everytime I load the game, having to wait to load after every match everytime just to get to an optionless, featureless menu system. I have no patience of a massive step backwards menu system just to play an instand action match that last almost as long as the menu loads.

Right now my money is going to Stalker~Clear Sky when that comes out.

Well it is unfortunate mappers think like this, honestly I would be looking to make mods (which I used generally) for my own love of this game and engine. Not because I of player counts, something which I think is overused!

Take Max Payne 2, there was a round up recently in my local game mag about mods for that game and how many players does that have? If you have a passion for creating things then I think thats all that matters!

Maybe I am just being overly optimistic but hey Im gonna stick with UT3 modding myself :) I just remember how things were back in UT2003 then to see things hit full mass a year odd later with UT2004 was really nice :p

my love for the game and the engine has made me rush into making a map just to abandon the project because of lack of planning. planning is so important this time around... i just couldn't stop myself from simply starting and i ran into some unfortunate problems. sucks. but i'm already at something new. this time with proper planning
i was just lucky that i wasn't too far into making the map because of all the stuff at university and only being able to learn the editor and work on the map during weekends (which effectively means friday/saturday night...) ;)

i have seen passion for creating custom content in another game recently. i was just checking around for some custom stuff for quake 4 because for some reason i wanted to play quake 4 online again. 'on the surface' it seemed people had given up on quake 4 for good. but it seems that's just not the case. the latest q4max version (competitive mod for q4 for those who dont' care too much about quake) was released by the end of january and there are still a bunch of mappers making maps for the games. some of them actually really really nice.

Hi WarTourist and if you really wanna know about it :) ... Well imo CliffyB made it sound like the failure of UT3 had more to do with unhappy customers and whiny users than with the problems/issues/bugs in the game.

Hi Anuban. I've never read him say that, so that sounds like a pretty subjective opinion. :)

Might be, but Grobut is right. Everything Epic said and didn't say ended up in public expectations that Epic couldn't match. Nobody who have kept an eye on the epic forums can disagree about that. You can call everyone idiots, it will still not change this fact.

Glad Epic acknowledge the problems like this and I'm very curious on what we will see in the future of UT. To me it's still the #1 game.
I don't remember calling Grobut an idiot, only that I challenged his post. Whether YOU consider him right is your prerogative, but I stand by my opinion as well. And for your info, I followed development on UT2003/4 and UT3 very closely. Yes, Epic stated they would do this and do that, but I personally never took any of it as a fooking promise. You see, I am a bit more realistic in that I realize that not all conceptual ideas make it into the finished product. I also know that rarely ever are shipped games exactly how they were conceived to be. It doesn't mean that I'm better than anyone else; maybe, just maybe, I look at this from a different point of view than most of you.

Yeah, what's weird is they got it right in the article propper. Well, since that's my father's name, it sounds like he just got some game jouralism ink!
Ah -- so it's not a typo -- it's an unintentional tip-of-the-hat to your father :)

I wonder if that's what Bill Gates Sr. feels like? :)

Okay so I just butchered the joke...

Okay I can live with that, I appreciate you responding in a non-hostile manner btw. ... but I don't think I am the only one that interpreted his statements about the state of PC gaming in that manner. I don't know Jeff but Cliff doesn't sound like the CliffyB of old who really was excited about all the stuff PC could allow him to do from a technological standpoint. And I never hear him say that he is really into UT anymore (he talks about Bioshock and MassEffect more than UT3 ... when he gave his last interview (the one at GDC with the young man with the glasses and little goatee) he didn't even mention UT3 but he did make sure he mentioned the two games above, and also he didn't say anything at all about gaming on the PC, even when it comes to Gears. And yes I understand that is because he finally got to see his game realized but then when you see how well Gears performs on the 360 as opposed to the PC that would appear to add more support to the viewpoint that in Cliff's mind the PC platform is no longer that essential to the success of Epic going forward.

Yeah quake 4 is pretty decent as is actually the game which pulled me away from playing UT2004 to only modding it, when I go back and play quake 4 now though its just not the same. UT3 seems to have spoiled me from alot of titles I played, perhaps I just realized that those were only fillers for me until FPS titles like UT3 came along. Then again each to their own I guess, quake 4 certainly does have some wicked maps, stock and custom. Hell even some of the options in Q4Max arnt too bad but I think it does go alittle far.

People did say quake 4 was dead but I think the release of the point patch and this new q4max release show its still going and how long after release. I didnt pick up a copy till later on myself because Id played the SP at a friends and wasnt impressed, only gave the MP a quick bash but thats why I bought it and it was pretty fun still but as always the game I was waiting for was UT3 :p

Just thought you'd like to know this. Crysis sales in belgium are respectable. Those of UT3 not. I blame the distributors personally. The ****ers decide what goes on the shelves and what doesn't. In fact in the big supermarkets such as Carrefour or Cora there's no sign of UT3 at all.

No, you said he was full of crap so I stand corrected. ^^ And you misunderstand me, if you and I don't expect Epic to follow through on every hint of possible features they spilled during development is of no importance. The general publics impressions is what matters.

I am so glad, SO glad, I didn't bother with a new computer for this.

And you assume patches don't take very long to make? Also consider that Epic also probably started working on Gears 2, and might have a few guys working on UT3 content (Game play content, not stuff like UI).
