What's in a name?

Wow, just... wow.

I never thought Epic/Midway could be so ****ing stupid.

The public perception of the UT200X series outside of the UT community isn't great. So why the hell did they name it 2007? What's wrong with UT3 or UT4? Nothing. It works, it gives the new game a place in the series, and excorcises the UT200X series' many demons. But no, they give it a name that ties the game back to the screw-ups Epic have already admitted they made with UT200X.

Nice PR work Epic/Midway. Keep it up

This is what my final post on Epic forum on that thread reads:

\\---------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay I spoke further with Raptor and this is what he informed me ...

RaptoR -- "I've just contacted Tim DaRosa from Midway and he says that "Unreal Tournament 2007" is confirmed as the official name for the title."

Raptor and BU and Hal.. I did start that thread so I will end it with that ... I appreciate your confirmation as I am sure the entire Epic community will. :)

So people and yes you as well my friend Mithan this is the word. UT2007 is the next PC version whether I like the name or not. :( (I know who the hell do I think I am   )

Thanks again to Raptor for his follow up and getting us all this information. :)

So do I. At the very least, UT2007 polarizes the community more than UT3.

And like it or not, PC games like these live and die by community approval. See Tribes: Vengeance and Deus Ex: Invisible War. Both games received good reviews and came from established franchises; but their communities didn't accept them, so they bombed.

UT3 just makes the most sense to me. Basing it on the Engine version from now on is the best move. And give it a subtitle so that if a new version comes out before an engine change they can still call it UT3: The Next Chapter or something.

Further proof the next UT will be just like the last, but prettier. The only positive I get out of the year name thing is we definitely know when the game will be out.

And subtitles suck worse than UT2000whatever.

I don't agree with that ... but hey it's a free forum. Not if the subtitles are short and sweet. UT3:The Challenge UT3: Gods UT4: Zero Point UT4: Termination

just some examples of the next four PC versions.

Hey Anuban, I know you mean well but you might have noticed that the BU staff don't really make it their job to go round posting news on other sites/forums unless we'e getting blatantly misquoted or misrepresented.
Its a full time job keeping BU uptodate and if the newsies went round correcting every misunderstanding or inaccuracy that springs up on other sites/forums then BU wouldn't be what is today.
Let us worry about the accuracy of our news.
You're welcome to keep cross posting it in other forums, but if mistakes arise due to this its not our responsability to clarify or correct this.
We post all Unreal-engine related news we get at BeyondUnreal. If a mistake arises we'll correct it here as well. Same goes for the other remaining U-Engine sites, they post what news they get, if they see it somewhere else first they'll usually indicate where it was seen first.
As I said its a full time job for multiple people to keep the BU news uptodate and accurate. If we started having to worry about other peoples news sites and forums sites we'd never get any work done :)

Well that's all well and good but when your news affects the ENTIRE unreal and Epic community I feel I have every right to find out the real truth behind the matter. So yes worry about the accuracy of your news but I will always be there to make sure it is correct the best that I can. I hope you are able to handle that because if I feel I am not getting the correct info and there is another source that I feel would know just as much you can bet I'll be checking with them and quoting sources that are supposedly reliable. :)

It looks really awesome but I really dont feel too much like upgrading my PC at the moment, lets just hope it really does come out in 2007 because I really cant afford the upgrade this year.

Looks awesome but I would love to see more UT1 styling. (and for god sakes, why not call it Unreal Tournament 2? I want it to be a real sequel).

.........and the news was accurate so whats the problem? I'm sorry but I really don't understand where you're going with this.
Yes we worry about the accuracy of our news. If we didn't well, lets face it, we'd be a pretty poor site and wouldn't have a fraction of the hits that we get today. I think that if you speak to the guys and girls running the other U-engine sites you'd fine they'd agree that inaccurate news is something everyone tries to avoid.
#1 Priority at BU is the news. That hasn't changed since Pete started it off and isn't going to change.
Again I see no problem here - we reported the accurate news. Thats it. No need to find the "real truth", there is no great conspiracy out there. How this managed to turn into a three page thread I'm not entirely sure, but come on, we reported the facts. RaptoR changed the UT forum name after confirming it through his sources. If you don't believe what we're saying thats your perogative. It just seems rather jaded.

[edit] and there really is no need to cross post entire contents from other forums either - a link would suffice. Yes there was a misunderstanding on the other forum. We don't need to know what you posted in verbatim - we are quite capable (as you've already pointed out) of having a look ourselves and finding out the "real truth" ;)

The problem with naming it UT2007 is that players will complain about little little things like "omg theyve ruined the TL", "The RL doesnt "feel" right", "one time, on band camp, i GOT STUCK ON A "#¤!¤# Static Mesh" i mean if we learnt anything from UT2003/2004 it was that ppl are insane when it comes to complain on EVERY little thing.

I cant go through watching all that stupidity again :)

Naming it Envy or even Unreal Tournament 2 like someone said is better imho.

I am quite amazed by the amount of people in the UT community that know everything there is to know about PR and how to sell twice the amount of copies as there are people on the planet.
Especially when you compare them to Epic's PR division which is comprised of a bunch of people that happened to play some UT games, but have any knowledge about PR whatsoever.

But seriously... like it or not, Epic explained in the past why they chose this naming convention.
It's not something you'll get away from just because some people call you "#@#&(%$ing stupid" as their main argument.
Every series, not even just games, have better and worse episodes, but you can't immediately let that deviate from your plans.
Nobody expects them to drop the name "UT", or even "Unreal" completely... which isn't too far from dropping the other part of the naming scheme when you think of it...

Look I am done with it. I said my peace and I learned just a little while ago that when you are done with something to just walk away from it before it escalates to a point where there is a bad confrontration. It is over for me and for the thread on Epic I am sure ... I even told Mithan he could close that thread if he wanted.

All in all, I'd rather have a crap name and a good game then the opposite. I really don't care what it's named (And I've been playing since the original UT - Unreal 1 if you count me getting it Retroactively ;)) as long as it plays good.
