Hmm I always thought those are skeletal anims... :con:

Yeah the ones for the player characters are skeletal anims, the ones for the monsters in invasion are the original vertex animations. Theres 2 entirely different sets, which means, even with the skeletal rigs there would need to be new animations added. Setting up a rig, especially extending on the UT3 one sounds like the easy part, the hard part is the new anims.

Oh, those ones from Invasion. Yes, they use Unreal1 vertex anims. But using them in not an option IMO, my thoughts were not about them but about player models. Sorry for confusing you :p

Even the player anims arnt of a great deal of use though since the vertex anims are the correct (but obsolete) set.

Okay, I played through U2 again, and the Skaarj are definitely not slow. I don't know why I thought that. I guess I was thinking about the Medium and Heavy class Skaarj.

However, the Medium and Heavy Skaarj probably won't fit very well into a U1 environment (except maybe as Troopers...), so someone could make new skins for the Light Skaarj representing the U1 classes of Skaarj (Assassin, Berserker etc.). The real question lies with how the Troopers will look. Perhaps someone could modify the Medium Skaarj by somehow making them slimmer, removing the claws and "dreads" (although I can take a guess that doing so will be extremely difficult), and adding code to let them hold Weapons.

Maybe using that unused alpha skaarj? That one has also no tatoos in.
Seen even here and it's in that Skaarj pack mod as found in filefornt or in UT2C.

This project is a remake of the original Unreal, so I think it's imperative to have remakes of the original Skaarj.

The Skaarj are initially a form of insect (pupae), and I really don't think any of the Skaarj designs since the original can support that idea. The structure of their face, the position of their 'tusks' etc. just isn't right.

UT2004 Skaarj somewhat resemble bulldogs in their facial structure (underbite etc.), while the U2 Skaarj are too gorilla like. The Unreal Skaarj are really the only ones who tie in with the Pupae.

Great, I agree to use the U2 Skaarj and now everyone is supporting remakes of the U1 Skaarj.

The Skaarj in the picture that Leo posted is the kind of Skaarj I actually wanted. Muscular, but not too bulky, doesn't look like a Bulldog (UT2K4), Gorilla (U2), or the god awful UC2 incarnation, but like the original U1 Skaarj. Someone should definitely try porting that model (however difficult it may be). We (and by 'we' I mean the people who are actually doing something with this project) should get a skinmaker (skinner sounds weird) to modify the skin for each class of U1 Skaarj. I might be able to do it, but I will most likely fail miserably.

Oh boy all this Unreal I Skaarj vs Unreal II Skaarj vs UT2004 Skaarj is getting nowhere fast.
Can't whoever is in charge of Character models etc on this project decide? Everybody is trowing ingredients into the pot and spoiling the stew.

I don't really have any preference either way but if I had to choose I would think since this is an unreal 1 remake then a remake of the unreal 1 Skaarj would be the obvious choice.

Anyway carry on then.

I think the answer is simple, your gonna redo Unreal, not UT, not UnrealII, not UT2003, not UT2004, nor UT3. So you should build an Unreal Skaarj, simple as that.....

Just make it high resolution and capable of more animations as Unreal so it fits UT3, and of course similar skills and movement and with alot more detail in general, but an Unreal Skaarj never the less :)

+1. If you're going to remake it, I'm sure everyone will agree with this.

Any shots yet?

Ok, on a serious note, obviously U1 Skaarj is the way to go, but the U2 Skaarj was suggested because it is allready there, modeled and skinned, only animations are left to be made (which is allready gigantic work in my opinion).

U1 Skaarj means to begin from zero, as zero as it gets and that's an ammount of work beyond my imagination.

I however want U1 style Skaarj only, because I hate everything else. The question only is; can the guys remake the oldschool Skaarj as cool as the original? Because the U2 Skaarj is technically a remake of the original and it sucks, it is not about a cool Skaarj, a remake or something else, it is about this something specific unique special (the essence) that makes the U1 Skaarj so cool, same goes for the other Unreal creatures.

Still it should be a 'minor' thing, because other creatures have to be made from scratch anyway like the Nali's. And for that matter most of the weapons if not all. Its all together a lot of work, and also having to create the Skaarj's is just a small part of the whole deal.....

That's true. Massive ammount of work, which why I'm afraid of lower quality results. Hope the guys can do it.

Hurry up and make the models dammit! I want my invasion gametype back in high-res already!
You mean Monster Hunt *cough* :D

Ahhhw, Monster Hunt with Egyptian style maps... I'd by UT3 right for this.
