Charity, isn't an obligation.. it's something that people can do.. if they are willing and able.. I don't hold anything against the billionaires that don't.. but it would be great if they did..
And yes we are selfish bastards..for the most part..but I don't think that we should be REQUIRED to help.. like.. maybe ..what if I didn't belive in the "charity" that I was being required to give to?
I think it is an obligation. The point is, celebritys and billionaires dont deserve the money any more than some substinance farmer in Africa, or northern alliance soildure, or aid worker, or doctor, or street kid...they just got lucky. And people will say "Britney works suprising hard you know!". Her looks work very hard, maybe. Her PR guys certainly do, and they probably get as much as her. But she doesnt deserve the money above any of the people I mentioned. So they have a moral obligation to donate at least a sizable proportion of their millions to charity : a charity of their choice of course. The law has nothing to do with it whatsoever.
They have a 'right' not to give a penny but they also have a duty to give most of it away.
and that is your problem.. depending on the ethics of the person giving time/money.. that is what they want to do.. and you saying that they should do more..when they don't have to do ANYTHING, just belittles the efforts of those who choose to do "something"
no matter how small.. to say to the Gates/and other rich peoples.. "hey you need to do more"..is just plain wrong..and I would even say selfish
Its true that those that do give money are infitintly better than those that give nothing or only token amounts. Noone is saying that they are doing nothing. But I dont see how what Claw is saying is in any way wrong or selfish.
Would it be wrong if I walked up to Britney Spears, punched her in the face, stole £10,000 worth of jewelry, sold it and gave it all to charity? Or if I embezzled £1000 a month from a company I was working for and siphoned it into a charity's account? That money would go a long, long way. As you often say Spirit, the people on the other end wouldnt care how the money was procured.
