somewhere; sometime?
hm, I only just noticed this thread, so I haven't read anything but the OP.
my response is as follows.
So all you butts saying the game isn't fun can shut up now. :)
well anything can be fun if you have a fun time doing it.
clearly, this fun was amplified by the presence of some friends. and doing something with friends, even if that something usually sucks, can make it fun.

but it's about the overall experience.
and overall, UT3 has been far less fun than it could have been, and far less fun than its predecessors.

tell me why I still have UT99 and 2k4 installed.
tell me why UT3 is basically collecting dust and weighing papers.

Hate to sound like a traitor, but the game in my avatar does seem like it may be up there in the ranks if you look at competitive FPS games overall. May have possibly been iD's best multiplayer game of all time. I bet Carmack regrets putting sequels and/or other IPs of his in the hands of all the third-party developers for doing multiplayer games over the past decade after that. Enemy Territory tanked big time, iirc. However, iD insisted that Q3A didn't need any sequels to keep it going, since the modding and mapping communities would make up for it. Epic still kept insisting on putting out sequel after sequel, but...in iD's case, if a multiplayer game ain't broke, don't fix it yourself, let the modding community do it.

Wedgebob; "your spend'en all me money"

Seriously though - you certainly make some valid points .. IMO Quake was an awesome series and paved the way for all FPS, Quake 2 was a riot (I remember playing the user mod CTF on dial-up back in the day. UT's bot AI has its roots in Quake before Steve Polge abandon ID his reaper bot mod & went to work for Epic.. (IMO Epic for its time had a superior graphics API, enhanced physics, better communications/networking abilities and so on .. evidently he could see its potential so he went for the brass ring)

While both are excellent, the UT & Quake series really are 2 different animals IMO - 1 substantial difference would be the dodge and physics including in the unreal series, any time i play any other FPS i feel like something is missing with out the dodge.

I'm pretty sure that could be down to a lot of different reasons, honestly. I still enjoy UT, UT2003 and UT2004. That doesn't change the fact that UT3 is really a fun game.

What kind of system do you have? What kind of framerate do you get? When UT3 came out I was on a 5 year old machine where I was getting dodgy framerates and just generally crappy performance. The game essentially sucked back then. I pretty much couldn't stand playing it, and my skill level was terrible.

Then I upgraded my machine and now I can hit where I point and my framerate is much better. Suddenly, the game got a hundred times more fun.

Does that mean I play it frequently? No, not really. Part of my problem with UT, in general, is that it's not patched frequently enough and there are tons of current, up to date, frequently bug fixed multiplayer games that I can play right now. I'm still up for an occasional UT session, but I have a hard time actually sitting down and playing it a lot like I did back in the day. Partially that is because between 2002 and 2007, hardly any decent PC games were coming out. Since 2007, tons of awesome PC games have come out and so it's difficult to just focus on one set of games or one single game series.

Personally, I'd say that is more likely the reason you have no interest in playing UT3 :p

Well, if you find the last posts of mine in the WIP Screenshot Thread, you'll see that I'm really bringing nostalgia back to UT3 in the form of a Quake 1-style map of sorts, should be fun to bring back a DM of old times with newer technology.

+1

Not to mention a few patches later some major kinks have been ironed out ..

@WedgeBob, sounds interesting .. <IMO, its always cool to see the older maps on the newer engine, sometimes the results are amazing> not to mention the familiarity ..

I haven't played UT3 since about early 2008 when I became heavily involved with Sins of a Solar Empire. I did start playing UT again--but UT99 and UT 2004, and I eventually concluded that they were just better than UT3. So, part of UT3's problem is that it has to compete with the earlier UT's. If far more people were playing UT3's CTF game and there were good custom maps for it, then I'd probably play UT3 CTF.

Would play UT3 online nowadays but my ****ty connection is too ****ty and prevents me to play any PC game online with at least decent framerate or without sudden disconnections that happen every damn time.
With UT3's DM I can't go back anymore to UT1, it's so much better and some of the custom maps are flat-out incredible.

What is happening with everyone's connections? You are not the first one to have that...I hope you are not using any of that Wi-Fi **** because that's worst thing that could happen to internet connections...

But everyone is so stupid to use that anyway nowadays...or because it is so cheap.

It's difficult to name specifically. You can look on my Steam profile to see what I've been playing lately, but Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 1/2 probably fit within the constraints of what I was talking about.

I dunno. I honestly don't know that they were "better" games. They both had problems of their own, for one UT online is a cheater filled wasteland right now for the vanilla gametypes. UT2004 is enjoyable but it honestly has lots of gameplay issues. I'm not saying UT3 is perfect, just that it's not really any worse than any other UT game.

Umm, hate to burst your bubble but I use Wi-Fi to play games like Borderlands and TF2 with no problems. I doubt that the lack of servers & online players has anything to do with my 'connection'...

...though I do need a wired connection just for faster d/l's ;)

You must be real close to the wireless modem, then. Or that modem is really strong. Last time I had a wireless router, it couldn't maintain good connection with the computer in a room next to it...

Maybe because you don't notice. But for some other stuff these connections are just faulty or there are various other problems, not to mention security risks.

Why Wi-fi at a limit of ~50mb/s, when you can cable with a limit of ~1Gb/s (or even more)?
Why cable with a limit of 1Gb/s when your Internet operates at 5Mb/s?

The problem with Wifi is simply the probability of interference. If your connection never got any interference, your Wifi, even on 102.11b, would likely operate as fast as the maximum capacity that most people's Internet connection can go. At 802.11g you've just left the same planet as the vast majority of connections out there. At 802.11n, you're a rich man if you can match that connection speed.
