UT3 never felt quite right to me. Mouse/movement felt odd(especially mouse), weapons feel quite alien compared to UT/UT2k4 so I just kinda bailed on it.
Then Section8 hit, got hooked on that but dropped it when the community died off and now BC2 has all my attention

Well, I do what I can with UT3, but now that I got back into the game in my avatar, it's a big-time gamble in terms of which game I'll declare as an ultimate choice in the multiplayer FPS genre.
Like I stated, Q3A was supported well enough by the community for almost as long as all the UT games combined, and it almost seems like there's still more a demand for Q3A to finally get an official sequel.
Of course, didn't Raven redo Q3A in id Tech 4 along with the SP Quake 4 game? Trying to remember. I think Raven and id added in that as a bonus.

Mouse/movement felt odd(especially mouse)

Crotale's Ini tweaks

10. How do I make my mouse sensitivity like it was in UT2004?

Lets dig the ut2004 settings to get some info first.

-Open user.ini in your ut2004/system folder and serch for "MouseSensitivity"
-Get the number associated with it.

-Run UT3 and set the mouse sensitivity to 1, then exit.
-open UTInput.ini in your C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3 Demo\UTGame\Config folder
-set bViewAccelerationEnabled=False
-set MouseSensitivity=5

And now to set the rotation to the same as your 2k4 rotation:

Take your UT2k4 sensitivity that we got in the first step and multiply it by 2.4

Here is an example::
UT2004 sens was .50, multiplied by 2.4 gives me 1.2.

This is the number that we will use to get UT3 to feel the same.

A few lines down in the same file as above (UTInput.ini) you will find:

Bindings=(Name="MouseX",Command="Count bXAxis | Axis aMouseX")
Bindings=(Name="MouseY",Command="Count bYAxis | Axis aMouseY")

And we will add the new rotation speed into it like this:

Bindings=(Name="MouseX",Command="Count bXAxis | Axis aMouseX Speed=1.2")
Bindings=(Name="MouseY",Command="Count bYAxis | Axis aMouseY Speed=1.2")

Save and close UTInput.ini

This setting will stick unlike any changes to the MouseSensitivity setting.

If you follow this tweak, make sure to do it for all gametypes!

Mouse acceleration and sensitivity are UT3-wide settings. Key-bindings like the ones in this tweak, that modify mousex and y rotation, are configurable for any gametype that uses its own input class. Therefore, make sure to copy your rotation settings into each mod's input section. If you don't the game-wide 0 acceleration and minimum sensitivity will make you barely be able to rotate at all. For example, if you are playing BTA or BTA freeze tag, you need to copy your rotations into their respective settings in the [BattleTeamArena.BattlePlayerInput] section of UTInput.ini.

...the large downside of a fresh title is that it splits the playerbase between more titles.*

If a bona-fide sequel were superior to the original in numerous ways and weren't inferior to it were released, I think most players would happily migrate to it. It would split the community in that people who don't have the necessary hardware to run the new version of the game would be left behind.

UT failed to do that. UT's sequels weren't better than the previous versions of the game and were inferior in various if not numerous ways.

I thought 2k4 was a vast improvement over UT99

When it comes to sequels, something with the gameplay has to be tweaked otherwise you might as well just update the existing title with new graphics

I found UT2k4 to be terribad in every way. I had it just to play mods that were actually good but after a while I pressed the uninstall button D:

UT3 pretty much answered my needs of another great UT title after the first one, and its version of the DM is my favourite one ever. And that's a good thing since I only play DM!

Why am I one of the few that doesn't have a problem with the mouse...

Turn off mouse smoothing/Vsync in game.
Run game at a stable FPS
Adjust your mouse sensitivity to your liking ingame.

That's really all there is to it, don't mess with anything else.

I don't have any issues with it as well. I think it's just a matter of getting used to it. Since I play quite a lot of UE3 games lately, I am getting better with UE3 input, but at the same time worse with UE2 input I presume.

UT3s input is really tied to the consistency of your framerate. Numerous people have tried to solve that one but even shifting from 90-200 feels extremely odd in UT3.

This.

My computer could run UT3 fairly well at high settings, but the odd time it would dip below 40FPS or so and would feel all weird. I dropped all settings and effects and picmip'd the **** out of it (although I'm fairly certain picmip did nothing other than make it look less like plastic) and it mostly went away.

There's an option regarding 1 frame thread lag. Also use framerate smoothing

You will lose raw fps, but the mouse input will become more consistent.

one frame lag is a huge performance hit though, so much so that it can nullify the benefits.

Well, like I said, I think the key part of the UT franchise was that the team-based gameplay is superior to Q3A. However, in terms of One-on-One, it's a push, they both do well in duels. In Free For All, even tho I do like Q3A's a lot, UT3 just seemed to have a lot more class in multiplayer DM. However, CTF is WAY better in UT3 than it ever was in Q3A. Just my two bits all the way around. Just trying to show that I'm not impartial to either the Quake 3 Arena or the Unreal Tournament franchised games.

In the hopes that it gets good again. No long time UTer wants the series to end with UT3.

Also the fact that Epics record (in most opinions) is UT99=good, UT2k3=bad, UT2k4=good, UT3=bad. The worst part is that if they had released waited and released 2k4 and they had released UT3 in it's current form, they would have nothing but good UT's.

I'd go with that for the most part, except i'd break it down something more like this;

UT99=Excellent <cutting edge - way before its time>, UT2k3=decent <could have been better>, UT2k4=Very good <Epic seriously listened & delivered>, UT3=poor@ initial release, - very good 5 patches later. <still the standard in competitive FPS games>

Yeah we still have good times fragging, then again there are 6 of us who play on LAN regularly .. we do players vs. AI or 3 vs 3 its always fun which ever we play. We have some Clan peeps we play with from the first tournament who have been around for a while, dunno .. maybe that helps the fun factor, who knows, - i should make ya all some videos sometime (wish i knew what worked the best)

Hate to sound like a traitor, but the game in my avatar does seem like it may be up there in the ranks if you look at competitive FPS games overall. May have possibly been iD's best multiplayer game of all time. I bet Carmack regrets putting sequels and/or other IPs of his in the hands of all the third-party developers for doing multiplayer games over the past decade after that. Enemy Territory tanked big time, iirc. However, iD insisted that Q3A didn't need any sequels to keep it going, since the modding and mapping communities would make up for it. Epic still kept insisting on putting out sequel after sequel, but...in iD's case, if a multiplayer game ain't broke, don't fix it yourself, let the modding community do it.
