In that case I can imagine they, for instance, may have to create an entire new collision framework around the level just for the Ripper projectiles.
NO

IMO dodgejumps completely killed UT as we knew it. (reasons for this have been stated hundreds of times in the past)

So therefor I hope it won't return. Ever.

the gameplay ut3 is based in avoids dodge jumps,
if they add the dodge jumps, then is not an ut3 expansion, its a different game.

Not entirely, Dodge jump made Ons and vCTF, it could be added back in for just them game modes, much like the translocater/hoverboard is standerd to their game types.

thats what im talking about, the gameplay mechanics have been already designed for ut3, and in ut3 dodge jump was chosen to be removed,

so ut3 != dodgejump,

dodge jump could return in a different new game, for example ut4, ut5, but ut3 has not been designed with dodge jump in mind, (different thing is somebody adds it as a non official mutator)

its not a debate, not an opinion, its a fact.

I'll take another UT2004 any day (strictly speaking level of improvement and content).

UT3 with a major functionality overhaul, a few tweaks under the hood, and some new content/modes would be awesome.

I hope that this is like UT 2003 ---> UT 2004 with the result being a bona fide UT99-2.

The question in my mind is:

Do they sincerely want to resurrect the UT series on the PC?

OR

Are they just looking for an inexpensive way (less expensive than making a UT4) to fulfill their contract with Midway and just write off the UT series? Do they really want to invest any more time, money, and energy in the Unreal franchise after the UT3 debacle?

If it is going to be retail... is that going to work? It seemed that a lot of people who bought the game weren't that happy with it, so are people going to be willing to pour more cash into a game they didn't manage to appreciate?

If the purpose of the expansion is indeed to transform UT3 into a real PC game and improve it ala UT 2003 ----> UT 2004 then I think they'd need to release an updated and very polished demo where people could see the new user interface and see that all of the user interface, server browser, keybinds, and tweaking features they enjoyed in UT 2004 will be there in the UT3 expansion.

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful news!!! wohooooo !!!

NO! It is NOT "wonderful news" yet. It's just news. Anything Epic produces (for PC gamers) is now heavily suspect and we cannot call it "good news" until we've seen a finished product that is worthy of the Unreal Tournament name.

The entire community is already spread out between 3 games, and the last one is the most suffering of them all. Making another split on the community is a suicidal step imho, especially with an expansion that will split the already too thin UT3 fanbase.

The community is spread out between three games (mostly just two games, UT99 and UT 2004)) because Epic failed to release a high quality UT sequel that was worthwhile for all of the people happily playing UT99 and UT 2004. If Epic were to produce a real, bona-fide UT99-2, giving UT3 the UT 2003 ----> UT 2004 treatment and making people WANT to play the new game exclusively because it is better and fresher and more populated online than the older games then the community could be united.

Epic's focus should not be on how to unite the greater UT community but rather on making a spectacular UT-for-the-PC game that would be so good that anyone who ever liked any Unreal game would want to play it exclusively. That's what they need to do. If they can do that then problem of having a spread-out, split-up fanbase will take care of itself.

Four posts in a row, 'nice.

Maybe not everyone thinks it as you.

I think Epic should simply get rid of the UI complete.y Start the game and you are in the game right away, ready to press fire. No hassle to find a server or people to play against, no hassle to set up anything, or to start a single player compgain. True instant action!

Why can't they just scrape this all together and make something that would create mass player counts and easily bring interest back to the unreal series. ALA UT99Live.

A UT99-Live would be a good idea to revitalize the franchise some along with just making UT99 available as a free download. It's not like it would cut into UT3 or UT 2004 sales at this point and I doubt that they're selling many copies of UT99 these days. By releasing UT99 as a free public download or as a UT99-Live they would generate publicity for the game and introducing new players to what is widely regarded as the best of the UT games. Getting people who are new to the franchise to play UT99 might be a great way to increase the UT fanbase.

I am skeptic about this though, no matter how great they make this, the hardcore fps scene is simply dead, not just for UT, but the scene is dead for all the traditional hardcore FPS games.

Is it dead because no one is interested in online multiplayer FPS or is it dead because the FPS scene lacks a kick-ass online multiplayer FPS that could make people as enthusiastic and as hardcore as UT99 did?

I think it's the later of two.

But at least it's his opinion and I somewhat share same thoughts.
Ditto. I think we've already had enough bad news from epic to be at least cautiously suspicious when we see some new announcement for UT3.

That is one of the most retarded ideas I've ever read and it would make the game worse than UT3 is today. What if you wanted to adjust some settings? What if you wanted to open up the server browser and choose what server you want to play on? (The real UT game is online multiplayer, btw.)

How would breaking up 300 players and hopefully adding more players where the game is all fixed up be a bad thing?
It isn't. Breaking version compatibility has happened before and the sky didn't fall.

Low player numbers on UT3 has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whenever I have tried to get a game there haven't been any populated servers near me or else the few that were populated were full. So, now I've pretty much given up looking. The last time that I fired up UT3 was August. :(

All that is by way of saying, Brizz is right, there is very little left to lose and much to gain.

As for the general announcement, it's so vague that I will follow WarTourist's sage advice and wait and see:

I understand many of you have little but the Internet to base your opinions on, but I would strongly encourage skepticism as ones default position.

I hope it comes good and I'm willing to pay for a good UT3.5 but I have to recognise that we have been here before - only to have our hopes dashed by the reality of the end product. :(

Rightly or wrongly, UT3 has strained and even broken the loyalty of many of us. Even for those for whom it proved to much to bear, I think we (I'm only in the "strained" category:)) are still looking for an excuse to abandon our heretical ways and return to the one true faith. I really do hope that Epic manage to provide us with that excuse.

Players counts are so low right now I wonder if they should even bother doing an expansion pack or an entirely new game. It's going to have to be a pretty impressive product in order to get player counts back up.

Ohhh an expansion to something that is already not worth playing. I am so excited!

Wait, no.

To be honest, there needs to be a gigantic leap in the games quality, playability, and feel for me to buy this. Something along the lines of UT2003 -> UT2004. Otherwise I just am not going to waste my money.
