What the hell is this "ballin" thing?
But what iff they hired you?
(i'm not serious BTW)
I'm fine with paying for this expansion as long as it is like the ut2004 of ut3. It needs to do what 2k4 did to ut2003 or i'm happy to be a pirate.
If it is only going to be along the lines of the ece pack then i want a free download. If it is a major improvement a la ut2k4 i'll pay

This is well-needed news, and I hope Epic makes the most of it. This is like there one last chance to redeem themselves. Give us the quality and quantity of maps we expect, optimize the engine, fix the BUGS. Fix the mouse input (if you can). Make how headshots are registered NORMALLY in any other fps and past UT. Give me infinite translocator. Give me better fps rates. Give me my $50 worth.

wow... who opened the door to the lair of the trolls

No trolls (save yourself), just people who care about their game who feel let down all this time and rightly so.

They should really include MSU stuff.

I am skeptic about this though, no matter how great they make this, the hardcore fps scene is simply dead, not just for UT, but the scene is dead for all the traditional hardcore FPS games. Todays PC gamers expect wholly different thing. They expect things like achievements and some form of recognition for the time they invest in a game, like BF Heroes and TF2 offers for example, and they prefer simple looks. Those are two things that UT does not offer at all.
Also with the coming of a free Quake, and a free Battlefield, there is some competition going on for roughly the same (pretty small) target audience.

Unless they focus their attention on consoles... Which just makes more sense really.

Well there is something here, see in acouple of years who are Epic going to market UT3 to on console? The market would have moved on to which ever console is hot then, which means they might not even be able to play UT3 at all.

For some reason burst sales have become the in thing, where everyone knows people on PC pickup a game and keep at it for however long. It doesnt really matter if a sequel gets released because as we've seen in the hardcore market not everyone will transition over. Maybe this is why hardcore FPS is seen as dead when in actual fact people just never got over the likes of Q3 and UT, sure you had people move to CS and BF but they really are a different type of game.

Im just wondering who's going to fill the void if Epic doesnt? Maybe a subscription model is in order as much as I hate to say it! Then again TF2 is fairing well and people mentioned QLive and BF Heroes so there is ways to support a game for a longer term without needing to release expansions. I just think this is Epic admitting they dropped the ball, especially on PC, for me thats where I think this game needs the most work and the sales numbers would agree with me :p

Hopefully, they will improve PC part of game, and apply fresh ideas to renewed game.

Things like match-making and auto-updates (cough* steam *cough) would be cool, also.

History repeats itself just as I thought it would.
That's fine by me as 2k4 was lightyears beyond 2k3.
I'm willing to bet that Assault makes a comeback.
Then again maybe its just going to be the MSUC content that us winners had to sign any ownership rights away in order to claim our prizes.
Nah, they wouldn't do that would they?

Another thing. This update had better do one of the following:
1. Remove the surcharge epic has by default enforced on the gamespeed. (It's playing at 120% by default or something) Slow it down to PS3 and Xbox speed.
or 2. Make the bots behave as if they are playing at 100% speed instead of 120%. The bots are too good for the speed they are playing at right now. I'm dead before i even know there is an enemy in the room.

i would go with option 2 because i actually like the speed that UT3 plays at. I just can't stand the bots beign so unnaturally 1337 even on the easy settings. Changing the bot AI or altering game speed is the way to go.

This is actually a really good point and seeing it made me recall some comments I heard from someone close to the project. The ripper in a static mesh filled environment would have great hurdles to overcome to work successfully.
In that case I can imagine they, for instance, may have to create an entire new collision framework around the level just for the Ripper projectiles.
Oh and Dodge Jumps,.. another defining characteristic of the UT franchise,..
NO

IMO dodgejumps completely killed UT as we knew it. (reasons for this have been stated hundreds of times in the past)

So therefor I hope it won't return. Ever.
