Yep, just heard it on TV: article five has been activated.

The terrorist should better start searching for the nearest cave to hide...

whatever they do they really need to add this tragedy to the list of possibilities and consider safety routes. as for all goverment and monumental buildings now. over 100 floors is a bit dangerous. especailly when entirely blocked halfway down.
under ground is a good idea.

the real estate there is too valuable and important to put into ONLY a park... there will be a memorial, but they will -have- to rebuild a new tower(s) there. either that or everyone who lives in the city and works there will have to go elsewhere. simply put, for the economy of the city they'll have to use the space (i still don't know if anyone who hasn't seen those buildings in person can grasp how big they were). If you took the floors of the building and laid them out side by side you would cover well over a dozen square miles (0.25 miles on a side i think x 2 towers x 110 floors each). New York City NEEDS that floor space and depends upon the revenue they generate.

I've been there. Took the elevators all the way up to the top. It was breathtaking. 80 floors in like 30 seconds...

All you have to do is smile!
except for the problems of what happens if you just bomb the first floor. 110 floors underground would be bad news with no ventilation system.

The towers actually were designed very well and specifically designed to withstand the catastrophe of large objects hitting them. They shouldn't have fallen down: the concept of dynamic load balancing was around long before computers. the working threory is that the structure was fine, but the fires ruined the temper of the steel after enough exposure- but better steel and steel alternatives werent available back then when the towers were built. They can rebuild with better materials capable of resisting much hotter fires without degradation. They will always be targets, but if the towers hadn't collapsed it wouldn't have been anywhere near as large a catastrophe as it was.

[edit]

A little more research: The air plane that hit the second building hit much lower than on the first one. When the temper was ruined, the floors above the breach dropped would have 'pancaked' the rest under all that weight.

The first tower probably would have remained upright even after the top floors dropped- there were much less of them. But it was almost certainly fatally damaged when building two dropped into the plaza.

Here's some news updates for ya:

  • No arrests were made by the FBI.
  • There are reports that there are people still alive under the wreckage of WTC, specifically in the floors below the building.
  • The White House is said to be the intended target of the 4th plane; Air Force One has also been listed as a object "they" targetted.
  • The FBI is saying that some of the hijackers were trained as pilots in the USA.

The explosion from those full fuel tanks surely did a lot of damage to the buildings. That along with the fire, meant that their destruction was eminent, although I was surprised how soon they fell. I don't think it's fair to say they shouldn't have fallen, the fires, built up by burning jet fuel did a lot of damage in that short time.

I just hope that the powers that be dont just let this wash over, change a few regulations here and there etc. I hope they destroy every single person who was behind this, every single one of them. I cant see a country wanting to 'harbour' the group or individual, but if they do........... god help us all.

If only there was a god.

The towers were built to withstand the impact of a 707. The planes hitting it where a lot bigger.

The problem are two things:
1.) Skyscrapers are hold under pressure by huge steel ropes running from the basement to the very top. If they are cut the top gets unstable and collapses on its own weight

2.) All skyscrapers swing in a regular frequeny, about a few meters at the top, but people don't notice that. Such a huge impact alters the frequeny and the magnitude of that swinging. Earthquake secured building are designed to compensate that on the foundation, but not at the top

You obviously don't work in a skyscraper.
I work in Key Tower, downtown Cleveland. The tallest building between Chicago and New York. On a very windy day the top of our building (60 floors) is designed to sway 24 inches. Here on the 47th floor, on a very windy day, it is easily discernible that the building is swaying. You can see it down the long hallways, or focus on an object on the ground. Doors and cabinets swing open and closed. I'm sure it was quite noticable on the higer floors of WTC.
Also, jet fuel can quickly decimate many kinds of materials. Another reason the think the building was weakened so quickly. Not just the fire, but the jet fuel that didn't explode, eroding parts of the foundation.

Also, (sorry...working in a skyscraper teaches you a lot about them) newer buildings, like mine (but not the WTC) ARE designed with major support at the top. It's a HUGE weight that sits on some thing that lets it compensate for that swinging. So, indeed, there is some support in the tops of these newer buildings.
