I'm not sure that's a good exemple ;)
how many apaches have crashed without even being shot at?

I'm not sure flying a 25 million dollar Attack Helo at night with nightvision at 20 meters off the ground at speeds over 100 knots in unfamilar terrain is easy

Just wanted to point out that there ARE national guard units in Iraq, although I am not sure they are technically forced to be there. As for the Army Reserve, it CAN be mobilized for war time operations in another country, and has been.

I'm in a Army Reservest Unit........we are Infantry instructors. so basically SFC's SSG's and SGT's make up the whole unit and a few officers........some of us have been individually called up and sent to IRAQ.........so if they have a shortage they will call you up and farm you out

Hey Lightfighter just cause your a soldier and im not doesnt mean you can call me a "punk ass" im far from it, in fact I only listen really to hip hop and classical. Punk is so not my taste.

I cant believe this thread was ressurected but very well, since so many ppl care ill update you all. My brother and mother now want me to join the army or something. My mom suggested I become a medic since im going to college to be a Nurse. Yeah mom thanks alot, ill be patching up soldiers while mortors are exploding around me.

Now that ive had a few months to think it over I am still not too sure. Something in me yearns so bad to join. The adventure, the discipline and doing things by the numbers all excites me. But theres that inner anxiety of facing combat and having to kill another man that eats me alive. If I truely believed in what I was fighting for I would kill without much quelm. I guess in the end it would probobly be better I didnt join because of that. I simply dont think I could become a number and like it. Im way too passionate. :(

Ok, my first post in here was most likely alcohol assisted. If you are already in college for what you want to do, I don't see why you would join. There is adventure, but not the kind you are thinking of I'm sure. It has only been 5 years since I've been out, and I'm sure things have changed a lot since then. I think everything about Iraq is stupid as hell, and most definately not worth dying for. Fighting for freedom is one thing, while fighting for politicians is another. They are not worth it. Even more weird is your mom and brother wanting you to join. You must be hard to live with or something. That is crazy. My mom was pissed that I joined, and that was during Clinton's "presidency". Ultimately the choice is yours. It will change your life, so don't make the decision lightly.

NTKB - If you don't believe strongly in everything the Army is doing / has done to date then you really should stay away. As you say, its not worth trying to fight / die for something you dont believe in.
I'd imagine your family want you to join so you become a better person, see the world, that sort of thing - don't listen to them. They are just working of the impression they have been given from the film and media. I advise you stay away unless you really believe in what they are fighting for.

Dont worry, If your lost and need some direction, you came to the right place, the armed forces that is. Dont worry about your convictions or worries or what some some folks have told you. when you leave whatever training you go through you'll feel reborn, and ready. Your doubts about your willingness will give way to a bigger picture. Your part of something that matters, your efforts, no matter how small will contribute. That all means saving lives, doesnt matter if your a line grunt (like I was) or a bulk fueler, it all matters and big time.

I know what you mean NT...
Toad worked on planes for 5 years, he went thru bootcamp and got to kick ass in paintball, but he didn't "play war" as he put it_
Then again, Bush wasn't president; no telling what that m0f0's gonna do, he's a fascist

Am I being vastly naive in thinking that in the Army you may get the chance to effect things for the better in the long run?

Not really spm, but it all depends on luck. You may be used as a tool to further someones politcal career, or you may be lucky and end up doing something that really matters.

And how is that different than with any other job that has a boss? So what if you may not get shot at in a civvie job, its really the same thing. Less excitement and less to like :\

i myself have been thinking over for quite a while about the option of joining the JGSDF (Rikujyo Jieita) after university, i really dont know what to do.

Woah... What the heck is that? Sounds like some sort of assassins!

I appreciate the ongoing advice and different opinions. I can see and feel both sides of the arguments though, thats what kills me. Its one of those moments in life where perhaps there is no right or wrong for you yourself. Just a decision that only your heart can tell the truth...

NT: Try the reserves, go through basic, next to no obligation. If its for you, throw in a CT.

(I miss the quote button)
It's not very often you get asked to kill someone in a 'normal' job.
