why do you want to bomb brown people anyway NT? what they do to you? heck youll be the "brave" one pushing the buttons to launch some missles if you join...

Eh brown ppl? If your referring to middle easterners that the whole reason why I DONT want to fight. Although I dont agree with attacks on civilians from EITHER side I dont feel compelled to go kill arabs for the vendetta thats set forth atm. Perhaps if an arab country REALLY attacked the USA then I would fight. But that wont happen because I dont think an entire arab country wants to attack the USA. Perhaps some individuals but not a country.

The Army is a strange animal .... All kinds of people get suckered in.

Right after getting my degree I was going through a directionless bad patch .... So I decided to do some surfing on the net for research and everything ... Anyways intelligence officer or signals officer were the 2 roles that kind of looked right.

So I got onto a net chatt with a recruiter ... Sort of told me the requierments and did some sweat talking .....

Anyways 3 years later and the British army has been in 2 maybe 3 conflicts I didn't agree with .... And I'm darn glad I didn't join.

The trooth is I wanted to go through the training and learn the skills but have the joice of how to use them. That's not the army. The army is about following orders and doing your duty.

I know I'm not good with authority ...

Now those are words of wisdom... You truely made me rethink a few things.

Hmm, why is it people always look at the army as a bad thing? For many people it has been a great thing.

If that is of any relevancy, i looked into it too, not that long ago. Seeing my diploma in computer science, the recruiter asked my if i considered fighting upon joining the army, to wich i answered "yes". He said basically that it was the way to go, since too many people tend to forget EVERY guy in the army, regardless of his role, is supposed to be trained to fight.
Just know that .... Y'oure entering the army, you accept the chance that you'll end up in a fight, no matter what place you have and what your belief are ... And they can't afford to have soldiers who wouldn't fight because of personal beliefs ... Right, wrong, that's irrelevant, that's how thing are, so think about the issue a lot.
I did.

Max you are back :).
And NT, if you are against the army for what they've done to the middle east- then boycot them altogether.

Bring it on frogman. I've got one of the rifles and bayonets that liberated your sad country just hungering for frog blood :)

P.S If you just want the training and the guns, but none of the service, join the Army Reserve or whatever the equivalent is in your country. I don't know if they have one in the UK, and I think it's the National Guard in the US. Here in Australia, reservists do the exact same training regeime, and participate in the same war games as full time soldiers, only thing is, they can't send reservists overseas if they don't want to go. They're a home defence unit. They can volounteer for deployment if they'd like to go, or put in for a soldier exchange posting (Most of our reservists do 3 months on a Hawaiian US Army base at some point in time, since it's a free holiday), but other than that, they're relegated to local defence.

ah ... the army equivalent of the sunday-driver ...
the guys that may see a gun if they're lucky and still get to pretend they're in the army.
Just pray that Bush, Blair or whoever is in charge doesn't change the rules ... with this war on terrorisme they've got an excellent excuse to do so and I'm sure that after another terrorist attack your congress will be more than willing to assist no matter how 'illegal'/stupid it might be.

They sent a ton of reservists from Northern Ireland to Iraq, despite their rather loud objections.

We just had a big spurt of defence reform. The reserve units are now being trained up in urban counter-terrorism actions, idea being that they'd be a highly trained group that could respond to a massive attack that would conceivably spread state police too thin.

'highly trained group' ... lol ... I'd say that a bunch of farmers with pitchforks make better 'urban counter-terrorism' units ;)

Or are they going to get real training & equipment like the regular army has now ? (yeah, that'll be the day ... )

I have a quote here,
"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance. How violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shredsthan be a part of so base an action!
It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing more than an act of murder."

He knew which side of the fence he was on:D

Being a soldier is basically being paid to kill. Once you put it that way, it makes you think twice about what this job represents. A lot of people tend to describe it in a very appealing way, almost like a sport, something you do when you look for action... I know some people are gonna say there's also a lot more than just killing people, but it remains the basis of the job, period. You're getting money so that someone can tell you:"kill this guy" anytime anyplace, and you HAVE to do it, otherwise you become a deserter, a criminal (kind of ironic, ain't it?). I hope i'll never have to kill someone in my life, but if i do, i hope it will not be because i get money for it or because someone else told me to do it. I'm not saying a country should not have a way to defend itself, but unfortunately most of army operations nowadays are not really about defense per say (do we need examples :D ?). But that's another debate. To be a soldier you need either to have a pretty big ego (allowing yourself to kill someone is something!), or to not think too much when you pull the trigger.

I don't know how they do things in your backwards country, but our reservists have ALWAYS had the same equipment and training as our full timers. They go to the exact same boot camp, they do the exact same specialist training, and they work alongside the full timers in field exercises AND in the field. The counter-terrorist training they'll get is basically Army MOUT training, coupled with a few other things like inserting into a building from the roof, and some NBC procedures. (Because all terrorists use chemicals, germs and nukes). At any time, a reservist can sign himself up for a stint in a field of operation that our Army's already in for at last 3 months. That means places like East Timor, and (I'm not as sure about this one), Iraq.

Unless you've been here, in our reserves, or you've got some really good information about it, shut your stupid dutch hole about other countries you stupid little troll.

In our Dutch hoe defense: our national garde also uses the same waeponry as the regular army (foot soldiers), c7 rifles are standard issue. Normal military training is also the way it happens here.
