Hey, I don't think I can be a big help in the UDK or anything related to UT, but I use Photoshop a lot, if that helps in making 2D textures if needed. I can do some simple maps too.

Let me know if that helps.

You know what? I think we should leave the Unreal 1 remaking to an actual commercial game studio. I think Teotl would be a good choice. Seriously, the whole time I was playing The Ball I felt like a Skaarj was going to hop around a corner and start shooting at me. The whole game has an overwhelming Unreal 1 feel to it.

The only problems with this would be getting Epic to agree to lend them the Unreal License, and convincing Teotl to go through with it, and not necessarily in that order.

EDIT: Either this or we could get Teotl to make Unreal 3. Seriously, if we let today's Epic make Unreal 3 there's no telling what they'll do to it. Well, actually, I can tell you. Meatbag characters, gloomy levels, awful retconning (Field Lattice Generators? WHY), and mercenaries as the main villains. (actually that last one wouldn't be so bad...)

I stand by my beliefs that Epic could never, ever make a game like Unreal today. Which is a shame, as today's technology could do a perfect job at capturing the "oh **** I'm alone and I have no idea where I'll find a way off of this planet" feel that Unreal 1 has.

Also, you forgot no level exploration and hamfisted attempts at "tragic" plot twists! Imagine how awf-I mean awesome it would be to have a version of the Gears of War Latino dude and his wife in the middle of a 30 minute long linear "enhanced" Sunspire Village!

Eh most games in that late 90's age had a sci-fi horror element to them (Quake, Half-Life, Unreal) which is missing these days. The lack of technology to produce realistic things made developers get creative with their games. Not these days!

I thought the biggest part of Unreal was exploring and finding all the neat world building details and alternate routes/secret areas you never would've otherwise found, but that stuff is really not in fashion ATM for FPS games.

Indeed not most. Although when I played Metro 2033 scavenging around was often rewarding (and needed). Have not played Crysis yet but that seems open-ish, being in the Jungle and all.

That is true. Especially since those lizard guys kinda look like Skaarj already, and that they used some of the Unreal sound effects.

Yeah. Unfortunately for me I tried to get The Ball (the mod version) maps to open in the editor so I could edit in some UT3 weapons and play the maps like that to see if it would work in an Unreal Remake, and in doing so I screwed up my UT3 install, and I don't have the install disk with me at the moment.

Then I realized that I could've asked them for the source, but I didn't because I was thinking that they deleted the old assets after they ported them to the UDK. Not to mention it was explicitly stated in the readme not to do that.

Still though, I think Epic should commission Teotl to make Unreal 3. I mean, it would be like how Nintendo gave the Metroid license to an obscure game company called Retro Studios. The result was Metroid Prime, one of the best Metroid games ever made.

I agree!

Hey, what happened to DavidM?

He appeared last year or so, to release his new non combat map (which I tested before he released it, too), but now he doesn't seem to be active either here or in UnrealSP.

I found someone called Savage in the forum of KatsBits.com who remade some of the Unreal I monsters. In the topic "3D Modelling WIP Project" he showed his Gasbag mesh, and I must say that he succeded in making an impressive and faithful remake at the same time. You might want to check it out.

Sly from the Epic Games forums is also making a remake of Unreal 1, and mainly by himself. From what I've heard, he masters Unreal Engine 1 and 2, but is a n00b in 3. For this reason, the project he works on is also a way for him to learn to use Unreal Engine 3. He also said that he will probably only work on half the shareware maps (from Vortex Rikers to Sacred Passage), and then pass it on to someone else if he looses motivation. Anyone interested?

EDIT: Not long ago I played DM-NaPaliKeep by Eric "Blade". It really captured the atmosphere of an Unreal 1 map. I think we could perhaps get him into the project.
