Shot was too big to paste in here at full res. It's a shot of a little useless/pointless/ridiculous experiment with BSP to see if merged brushes would have impact on the overal performance of a level, with the aim to possibly do something with this knowledge later on.

I made a small area where there would be fences to section off playable from non-playable area. The fences I purposely made pretty detailed for BSP fences, and I used those fences to check the merged stuff against the non-merged stuff. So far I've not encountered any negative side to merging brushes (excluding filesize/lightmaps for now) and the merged fence brushes prove to be remarkably stable, causing not a single error thusfar. The positive side to the merged brushes is that it actually seems to improve workability in the editor (less brushes, less chugging, apparently regardless the complexity of said brushes, so far anyway), and ingame it makes little to no difference for performance. I went and merged the fences from 976 brushes to a mere 6 brushes total. Further investigation pending.

On an unrelated note, I should really just install Max on my PC again.

Those fences are some cute bsp! Does one still merge brushes by surrounding all the bsp with the builder brush and deintersecting? Did the holp packs export all their bsp into max, optimise it and then reimport it, or just leave it as bsp? If so why? Too high a material count on the resulting mesh? Questions, questions :p

With DM-Echelon I used and kept it 99% BSP. Wouldn't have been worth it to convert to meshes. Wouldn't look much different, and working with BSP is just quicker and easier. :p

edit: I know Sjosz used a few meshes in his map instead of bsp. But that was because there were some bsp holes or lighting issues...

They aren't moving yet. I am still undecided whether I want the holo parts to just "simulate" walls as flat surfaces or the texture of the wall too. In real-life it would probably still look a bit like a brick-wall even if there was no color but those cyan grid-lines.
I'll hit youtube for a video of the Star Trek holo effect. It's been ages since I watched that and even then I only saw the original series and a few episodes with Picard. Which season/crew should I search for? My father has the movies too so if it occurs in one of them that would be neat.

yeah, the effect i had in mind was from one the movies. star trek: insurrection. there are a couple of scenes where they show damaged holographic projections.
to recreate that effect i guess i'd use alpha channels to blend a panning texture into the grid texture. should look pretty nice :)
