It's got an 80% so far on Rotten Tomatoes with an 87% from their 'cream of the crop' reviewers (not sure exactly what it takes not to qualify; the New York Post apparently makes the cut). Those numbers are very nearly unheard of.

If nothing else its better than 99% of the action films out there (which is kinda what it is.) Most people going into it should be looking to see an action/comedy flick (maybe with a bit of drama.) So character develpoment and such shouldn't be needed.

Only in America can a television show get cancelled in its first season but then gets brought to the silver screen in such an awesome fashion. You might recommend it to people who have no clue what Firefly is but they can't enjoy the movie as much since there is little character development and just action. This is probably why it was given poor reviews by people who have never watched the series or never 'got it'. I'm really hoping the small fanbase can drag enough of their friends to the theatres to generate enough revenue to ressurect the IP in some manner or form, but with review bombs here and there scaring away the 'normal' people, that is going to be difficult.

It's gotten 85 / 100 on Metacritic.

Couple of 50% reviews but mostly they start at 70%.

Wow. That was the best movie I've seen in at least a year. I'm quite a fan of the series (managed to catch a bit of it in the dead of night on free to air) and it was just what I wanted: a Firefly movie.

Some great quotes, typical Joss Whedon dialogue :)

I don't think that is quite accurate. It's top rated by people who vote on Yahoo Movies, but if you head off to websites that report earnings, Serenity is in trouble if the hardcore fans don't go see it an extra 10 times. It's already fallen to the 8th spot in America and has only grossed 17 million. Sure, it may be a better movie than Flight Plan, but executives don't judge movies by their artistic merit. FP has grossed over 53 million in two weeks, a number which may just ensure the survival of the Firefly IP.

But 17 million isn't even half of the 39 million spent on the movie. I kind of wonder what the hell they spent 39 million on... The actors are all cheap TV level players and the 3D effects were ok, costumes were bland... But anyways, they still have a lot more tickets, DVD sales, merchandising to sell to recoup their losses. 'Normal' people just aren't interested in a sci-fi film they've never heard of before. I guess they would rather watch Jodie Foster panic on an airplane.

Sci-Fi films are a nitch market to begin with. I think on the average most of the money they make is in the first week. Hopefully the series / movie will follow in the footsteps of The Family Guy. Get released on dvd and have sales and intrest increase after time and have the show brought back in a year or so.

So - you're one of those fags that saw it without watching the series first?
Yes. The movies stands on it's own reasonably, except for the beginning, which jumps you in a bit harshsly.

'least I'm not one of those fags who demand you see the series for ":teh tru meening!!!"

I've seen it with people who had no familiarity with the series, and they had no problem following and loving it. You're just dumb, dumbass.

What'd you dislike about the physics? Firefly's one of the few shows that actually gets it very nearly right.
