Competitive online players ONLY? Meh, I think any online player would have some clue... lets not mention lan either, I mean cmon everyone knows a true comp has as little latency as possible.

Have you ever played in a clan match or a PUG (pickup game match--like a clan match)? Playing in an organized 5-on-5 CTF clan match or PUG is a completely different game than playing on a public server. I wouldn't have believed this before, but after having played PUG matches for years I really do think that people who take the game seriously and who play it competitively in organized matches would have a better sense of what makes a good map.

For anyone who's interested in learning how to PUG, you can find the UT99 pug matches at irc.GameRadius.net #speedpug. There are also UT3 pug matches on the same server at #ut3pugs.

high hopes

Actually, more people play UT99 today than play UT3 and perhaps even more than who play UT 2004.

However, the proper methodology for comparing the success of these games is to examine player counts at a given amount of time after each game's release. After all, UT99 was released in...1999.

The proper comparison is--how many people were playing UT99 in 2001 (two years after its release) compared to how many people were playing UT 2004 in 2006 (two years after its release). I can say that two years after UT99's release it was possible to find 3000 people (not bots counted as people by the server browser) playing UT99 CTF 24/7 (and that's just the CTF game). Can anyone say the same for UT 2004? I feel pretty certain that come late 2009, two years after UT3's release, UT99's player counts in 2001 will more than trounce UT3's player counts in 2009.

Agree with u ma8, i dont know if some one remember, one week was a problem about conecting to the master servers of UT3 (a hacker atack to gamespy and UT3 master servers and no one could be able to see the main list of servers of any type of game ) in that week i reinstall it UT GOTY and for me was a complete and good surprise to find many people STILL playing the game!! for example when i get into a server i found a complete family playing the game and they were very friendly :) .

If Epic do this right, many good things will happen! in the future i hope this could be true :p

Whippersnapper added the "{edit--UT99}" part in the quote of your post, he added that in when he replied, make sense?

your original post looks like you meant ut99 anyway, cause of what skaarjmaster said.

nobody knew you meant unreal 1.

but...

You're wrong as ****.

true he is, people do still play it :D

He didnt say clan match or pug though did he? he was saying that the only people who know anything about map flow are that little crowd he hangs around with.

Theres also different needs for different types of gamers, I understand that (so do the people who make the maps) and thats why some maps are played competitively and some arnt that doesnt make one map any less enjoyable then another.

I guess all Im sayin is there are people out there who dont fall into that small little category and can still make kick arse maps, or know their **** about mapflow. The thing of it is if it doesnt have comp in the title the competitive community wont even look twice at it. I just think there is a certain line there, some people cross it, some dont!

I prefer to play with those that dont cross that line, it doesnt matter if its a clan match, PUG, PUB, LAN, etc etc etc

1) he never called anyone whiners (but I will)
2) what's wrong about his "story", so far I've seen any communication from Epic being welcomed by a massive load of complaints
3) One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. Two can be as bad as one. It's the loneliest number since the number one

Guess again :)
As the tag points out, you were wrong again.
 Are you available? *takes a knee* ;)

But, to be fair, there are probably less people playing vanilla gametypes in either of those games than in UT3. :) It is IMPOSSIBLE to find a vanilla game in UT. Every server has 800 mutators on it that change everything from gamespeed to weapon balance to "netcode". It's ridiculous.

1) No, he describes whiner behaviour. I just name it for him since he doesn't.
2) The story he describes in short is the following: Epic released a great game and now there's an expansion coming. Why is everyone whining about it?
While the story, in fact, is more like, Epic released a game which has a few things done not so well, and didn't keep all of their promises up till now.

That's why I don't play it online anymore.

The only vanilla servers I can find are in COD, which still rules btw.
