Man, I can't wait until I can build a new computer! Since I have been listening to these old game soundtracks, I tried playing some of those games. Each time I did, no matter what hard drive or partition I was one, the game kept hanging and I could hear what is best described as the hard drive skipping while it did. I checked the event viewer and I had a bunch of errors: UlSata (9) and Disk (51).
The error messages were: "The device, \Device\Scsi\UlSata1, did not respond within the timeout period." and "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, is not ready for access yet." Considering that the first error was the Sata, I figure that something is up with the Sata chip/controller. Either that, or (and I don't know how this would even work) some sort of problem with the GPU. I mention this because I am pretty sure I have had similar errors when I try to run a game that's on Harddisk0 as well. At present, I don't have any games installed on any of the partitions of Harddisk0, so either I will try installing something small, or move one of my games that are just executables and try that. If I get the error, then I can rule out the actual disk drives, since Harddisk0 is the "new" drive that I installed AFTER I was already getting these errors. That would lead me back to the Sata chip. Anyone know if they can have issues communicating with video cards? It occurrs to me that perhaps I should check to see if I have the most recent video card drivers (for a card that's ridiculously old), but what I just don't get is why that could be the issue if I didn't have the problem before. Hmm, I guess there's the possibility that it started back when I last updated the video card drivers, but that was so long ago, I'll never know.
Anyway, I know I have talked about this before, and hopefully I won't have to worry about this much longer, but I would still like to try to figure this out. It would be nice to be able to have this computer available for Riley to play games on, etc., once I build a new one.
