Could be something you have running in the background. For instance: Windows media player. If it's on... you monitor WILL NOT go to screensaver or go to "sleep". So I'm sure there can be other programs out there that share this behavior.

Well, I don't leave WMP itself running. I do have wmpnetwk and wmpnscnfg running in the background, but that I did that several months ago in order to stream from my pc to my PS3. Typically, this problem occasionally happens after I have been using Firefox, but even that isn't a consistent cause. It's just, well, random! I can reset the delay to 15 minutes and I'll be good for a few days, and then there are times when I do it and it doesn't take!

ANTEC LanBoy Air

I think this is a pretty nice case, been reading the reviews and might add this to my wish list. Would like to see in person first.
They have a few colors kinda like the Blue /Black.

Wow! That's a nice-looking case! Of course, the one thing you might have to do a lot more than usual is using compressed air to clean out the insides. Unless there are filters on all those mesh panels!

I would throw in an extra Hard Drive 1TB should be enuff for you. I know you like your Graphics Software.. Make sure to upgrade to Windows 7 64Bit, to take advantage of the Extra Ram..

Ice, the answer is no. We built Aaron's at the TAZ-LAN! I have an extra monitor and the mini-atx case but am holding onto it. :):)

Alrighty, the above parts are no longer available. However, there is still the possibility of Aaron upgrading his system for basically free.
I swapped systems with Linda. She was running the ASUS P5NSLI NForce570, Intel Dual Core E6600, Corsair 1Gx2 TWIN2X2048-6400 and a eGeForce 8600GTS and a 320GB Western Digital HD.
He will need a few other parts like DVD, Power Supply, etc to do a small upgrade. If you all have any spare parts speak up. Maybe this would be a fun project at the LAN.

I got bored and decided to swap systems.

So, in case some of you missed my mentioning it on Facebook, the popo cruiser took some damage when someone ran a red light. My car got hit on the driver's side front door, and if I still had my old Grand Am, I probably would have been hurt pretty badly. As it is, they are repairing the vehicle and, hopefully, it won't drive any differently. In any case, I'm hoping to get a quick, nice settlement out of this, so I hope to be building a new computer soon (FINALLY). Your input on what I should be looking for would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to not spend more than $700-$800. Dev, it looks like I might be able to play COD after all! :)

For the longest time I was trying to figure out what your post had to do with computer problems/upgrades lol. I don't know if $700-$800 is enough to build a solid rig. Some shortcuts will have to be taken. What size case are you rocking? Will a more modern video card fit in there? (they're getting kind of big). But assuming all you need is internal hardware. Mobo/CPU combo @ $300 to $400, Vid card @ $200, Ram @ $100 and powersupply @ $100 might be feasible... Are you current hard drives and cd/dvd drives IDE or SATA? IDE is pretty much getting phased out.

I'd definitely stick with Intel. LGA 1156... you can get an i5 or possibly an i7 semi cheap. I think Dave will agree ASUS and/or EVGA for the motherboard. I liked my Intel mobo... but this EVGA has been flawless. Call me a fanboy, but Nvidia kicks ATI's ass in the long run. As far as memory... I've always gone with Corsair... but kingston and them might be ok. I assume you'll still be running XP... so no reason to get a ridiculous amount of Ram.

Well, I'm thinking of rebuilding the entire thing except for hard drives. I think I will move up to Win7, though maybe not immediately. All this really depends on how much I get. Also, for the most part, I know what brands and parts to be looking for, but when it comes to chips, I'm at a complete loss. When I know how much I will be able to spend, then we can really start talking.

Incidentally, my mother-in-law will be buying Gabby a laptop soon, and I would definitely like some input on that. I'm guessing spending limit will be something like $500-$600. Thanks guys!

Get a Dell Laptop.. They are pretty rock solid and come with a complete package. Just make sure to choose the options you really need.

ICE you really should get a New HD for a New Computer. Keep your current ones as backup. Need a budget to work with but Boney is correct with all his choices. Ram can be what ever is on sale. If your not building a Uber Gaming Rig then go with what's on sale to save.

Let us know the budget in the mean time here's something to chomp on.
The $1,000 Enthusiast PC or The $400 Gaming PC

Also when purchasing check ALL websites. Newegg, Tigerdirect, zipzoomfly, etc. I saved almost $100 shopping around the last time. Zipzoomfly's "combo deals" saved me quite a bit. But newegg often times has a lot of stuff free shipping (don't mess around because the offer is gone as quickly as it shows up). Also if you order early afternoon there is a good chance newegg would have it on your doorstep the next day. Just some stuffs to think about.

Taz, thanks for the advice. Now here's the thing: I haven't read a computer mag and have no clue what's going on in the chip market. So, I need to know what is worthwhile getting in a laptop. My mother-in-law bought a new one last year and the thing she was most concerned in was screen size, so the computer she ended up with is only decent in speed with opening up programs, etc.

Hmm, I bought a new HD last year. I've been so lazy that I haven't even allocated half of it yet. I know that windows doesn't like seeing another HD with windows in the boot sector, or at least it used to. Anyone know if I boot to windows 7, will it go into conniptions if a different HD has xp on it? I want to be able to transfer all necessary data before reformatting, though maybe I will just leave the HD in the old comp and move the other ones.

AMD VS Intel
I am Intel Fanboy..

Dell Inspiron 17R's are real nice. Get the Core I5 with the 460M Chipset.
Choose your options. Then shop around and see what HP and others offer etc..

Back up the Data and remove your partitions. Then install Windows 7. You can re-partition later if need to.
