Please re-read my post. A drop in frame rate almost always preceded my CTDs and therefore is, in a way, indeed deadly.

Yeh I read that. :) With the deadly comment I meant to say that in fast paced shooters like UT a steady framerate is a must have. In Fallout this is much less the case, since the whole game is on a slower pace.
And the other thing I meant to say was: Maybe FRAPS is the reason the FSP drops occur? Did you try playing without FRAPS?

Well, I have FRAPS displaying the FPS in all games since I build this PC over 1,5 years ago. Occasionally I want to know the number at the exact moment I want to know it and that's why it's always on. I highly doubt FRAPS is the reason for the crashes. I looked around a bit trying to find help and found quite a few people having similar problems. I had a similar experience with Morrowind - the older your save became, the more stuff you did and places you visited, the less stable was your game. Might be the same thing here.

My personal experience was, a few crashes when I started the game a few weeks ago, then almost nothing, then loads during exploring the wastelands, and when I gave up exploring and followed the story again it went back to almost no crashes (and I didn't have to "reset the performance" with F5/F9). I did explore the wastelands for weeks with almost no problems before the number of crashes jumped up at some point. Problem is I'm not sure what that point was.

I posted it more as a hint for others who might have the same problem. It's worth a try.

*edit*
I'll try playing without FRAPS. I'll load an old save from before I started to follow the main story and do the stuff that usually ended with a crash.

Crashed again after a battle with a couple of Enclave goons. This time when I clicked on the "Items" button in the PIPBoy.
Fallout 3 encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
FRAPS wasn't running this time.

So yeah.

News time children!

Never forget the importance of periodic performance fixes; looting a corpse, quick traveling, saving via the menu, clicking a button, I don't care which. If your game engine is clogged, the only wasteland arsehole it's going to crash back to the desktop is you. So be smart. Watch that FPS counter and quick save and load whenever you need.

No doubt, and I don't say people should go download FRAPS. As I said, it's always running in the background for me and that's how I noticed the problem. By chance, really. I doubt I'd have bothered enabling the in-game FPS counter since I had no reason to do that even if FRAPS wouldn't have been running already.

I just had a "WTF IS THAT THING (centur)" moment fighting a super Mutant for the first time.
And yes, it's the first day I play this game.

It'll get worse. Wait till you begin running into the Feral Ghouls. :p

I'm quite deep into it (about 70 hours worth) and I've loved it. My only gripe is that the Sniper Rifles absolutely suck. Unless you're close to the target - which, if you are, defeats the whole purpose of using a Sniper Rifle - you have to either aim above or below it to actually hit it. Not to mention their terrible durability, although I got the unique rifles, which helps out greatly.

Still... those things should have... you know... range? As it stands, a target seems to have to fill about 3/4 the center scope reticule just to have a shot at hitting it at all.

Man, I just realized the Operation Anchorage and The Pitt DLC is being released on Tuesday and Sunday respectively, that has totally sneaked up on me. I haven't played it in a fair while now, but now I'm probably going to get sucked into it all over again.

Interesting. So how do you feel about the game now that you've actually played it?

Microsoft also intends to create a PC-specific marketplace offering demos, videos, and expansions for the eager gamer to throw money at. In fact, GFWL will be the only place Vault dwellers will be able to buy the upcoming Fallout 3 downloadable content.

Am I the only one who didn't realize this?

I think it's good, I had nice moments, even with the V.A.T.S. Especially for a last-kill-shot on a opponent. Otherwise you'll want to manually aim.

Unfortunately I get too much Bioshock in this game, searching and searching all over again for very few ammo is rather annoying. But then they got the concept right, you really got to do with what you have, and sometimes it's a pain in the ass even on normal.

Not that I'm out of caps, but the vendors empty out really quick in ammo, which makes this a pain in the ass even more, and weapon repair is really expensive.

Yesterday night I completely lost interest in a "search the family" quest. Most of the quest just ends up being chain quest and it's really annoying. I really like the dup-mart research quest for example, quest like these makes me want to keep on going, "listen-to-tape", "find-the-location-yourself" quests are sooooo old and boring. :(

I really try to like this game to keep on playing it regularly but it's hard for all of above.

EDIT: Also I don't understand something, my medicine is at 40 or so, I have a food purifier, and all that. But whenever I eat or consume something my health BARELY goes up a bit. That's just like Bioshock with the useless potatoes ship sacs, but then when you find Stimpacks or water drains you're in heaven. Screw the RAD+, tap water heals so fast and radiation is so easy to cure of you got rad away's. There's also a perk which reduce 50% of radiation taken from drinking tap/toilet(WTF!) water.

And the game keep on crashing randomly in many houses, I have to play this game windowed to access the task manager.

40 medicine isn't alot, and food doesn't heal for much inherently anyway.

As for ammo, hunt around for some raider camps, snipe them out and flank them from long/medium range then run in and loot the joint. You get some good ammo that way - or head into DC.

The key words there are "Buy the downloadable content." The mod content will likely be regular old .ESP plugin files... and will, of course, therefore show up on all the torrent trackers that do such things very quickly as a result. :p

Hint: Find the "Alien Blaster" (Northwest-ish of Scrapyard). It's one-shot-one-kill in many cases. VERY good close range weapon.

With it you'll find plenty of ammo, but use it wisely because there is little ammo to find elsewhere.
Actually, you're a fair bit off.
The best way to find the Alien Crash Site is to head directly north of MDPL-13 Power Station, which is North-Northwest of Minefield. To get there from the Scrapyard, you'd have to walk Northeast, not Northwest, and quite a fair bit off.

You'll know you're getting close when you pick up the signal from the radio - it only extends about 200 yards out into the gameworld.
He's absolutely right about the ammo though - literally about half the Alien Power Cells in the game are alongside the Alien Blaster, and you'll need a certain random encounter to get much of the rest of them. Without cheating, there's about 250 units of ammo in the entire game world. Not 250 ammo packs - 250 ammo, period, making it hands-down the rarest ammo in the game, and each cell has 12 ammo, if memory serves. Of course, if you're playing it on the PC, you can just cheat and give yourself more, if that floats your boat. :p

Obviously, repairing the weapon will have to be done by NPCs, as the Alien Blaster is unique. Your best bet would be to head to Canterbury Commons and invest money in Crazy Wolfgang, which will give him the highest repair skill in the game (at about 75.) Alternatively, if you're on the PC, you can type player.srm to activate the repair screen using your own skill, and trade in caps for repairs as usual. It degrades fast, so watch its condition and your ammo, as well.

Note that a stop to the Scrapyard isn't a bad idea, however...
...as you can recruit Dogmeat there, and he's easily one of the best followers in the game.

You're right. Sorry I was going by hazy memory. At the time I found the Alien ship, I was exploring that whole area (Scrap Yard, Power Station, Greener Pastures, etc..).
