@crow: u can download the cvs version for free...

but i agree to ya, it isnt very efficient.
I still hope the choice will be an engine that will work on Linux out of the box and doesnt need a crappy emulator

Since there is hardly anything promising coming up soon, I'll be happy if they choose any of the engines mentioned above.

However Doom3 seems like a less good choice to me and UT04 is already a little old to get started now.

benmcl, I am personally pro-mac and pro-linux. In general, i tend to dislike the platforme dependant philosophy. But, to be honnest, after playing Half-Life 2, it would be unreasonable to think that any other game engine currently available could be a better "host" for Infilration. That is, of course in my opinion... which is also taking into consideration the modification support for half-life.

When considering an engine, for what ever purposes, you got to take account of all considerations. "Is it platforme dependant?" is one of these consideration. Sadly, nowadays, the answer to this question is "yes" and we have to live with that. On the other hand, I do not thing this is a "critical" consideration in this case, even thought it's a major one. A critical consideration in the case of Infilration would be "does it have network support?" or "does it have modification support".

Taking all things into considerations, my conclusion is that Half-Life 2 is the best choice.

Maybe a good exercise would be to write down every decision considerations in choosing and engine, give them weights (like from 0 to 5 for unimportant to major, with an additional weight for critical considerations).

I agree geogob. the more Half Life 2 I play the more impressed I am. I do admit that I am far from qualified to render opinion on what is under the hood.

The problem with the UT2K4 engine is fairly simple, there has yet to be a game to show off what it really can do. Yes UT2K4 is sorta a fun game, and real run with chaos, but it hardly shows what the engine can do.

Half Life 2 on the other hand really shows what source can do. Far Cry falls some where in between I expect. The prblem is that many of us are judging an engine based on the game to headline it and not actually looking at what the engine can and can not do. Its the engine and not the game we need to be conerned about.

Begin Rant;

I will never give a dime to the cedega people! they forked the wine project and gave close to jack chit code back the cvs version is willfully castrated and the only usefull utility is point to play which is more akin to pay to play. They are also the single largest reason for why we do not have native half life ports to linux. Oh and emulation just doesn't work right ... there's a feeling of wrongness while you use stuff through emulation ... plus you still have to install proprietary dlls fonts and other things to make games work in winex.

End Rant;

What would people be willing to give up in order to get to Inf 3.0 quicker? I've never even attempted to understand what it takes to make a mod for any engine, but I would imagine that, while time consuming, skinning and modelling characters and weapons would fairly easy. I would likewise imagine that writing the code for things like EAS and AI bot behaviour would be a lot more difficult.

If an initial release of 3.0 was made with features missing, what would be the minimum feature set that would be acceptable.

1 Map, 2 weapons, the bot ai the game uses, TDM mode (brrr...but for a first release it is ok).

I'd give up the entire EAS game mode ( 3.0 would be strictly online TDM out of the box )

And I wouldn't be hurt if a few of the weapons were omitted from the first release. I absolutely WOULD be hurt if the M1911A1 wasn't in the release.

I'd give up the fancy INF playermodels and just use the stock UT2k4 marine model.

that's about it. Get 3.0 as fast as you can! :D

All these engines are very capable engines as far as features and technology... DooM 3 is at something of a disadvantage due to the high hardware overhead, and limited vis and player count you can actually render in a scene; per-pixel everything just has an enormous amount of overhead and I fell makes it an impractical choice...

All the other engines each offer unique value and advantages, mature tools, compatibility, excellent developer support; but as a Sound Designer I like UT2004 the least (though I far from dislike it)...

In the final analysis the best engine is the one you find a capable, committed, and results oriented Programmer for, nothing is more decisive as there is a paucity of really good Programmers to work on Mods...

So I would say 'what ever engine the lead Programmer or Programmers prefer and have mastered' all these engines have fantastic and unique tools for game asset Artists, and all have their weak spots...

I just hope there is an Infiltration Mk II, and it doesn't have locked view vection so I can actually play it.

:)

I've been playing alot of half-life two recently and it runs damn nice. I would have to change my vote from far cry to HL2.

as much as it would be nice to have kilometers to area to play in, it probibly just wouldn't work that well in multiplayer. Most people wouldn't be willing to take the time to make a 2 or 3 minute hike through a forest.

the Source engine looks like a really good choice. For ****s and giggles I'm going to have a look at the sdk for it.

Source may be be a nice engine. Sadly you have to deal with Steam to use it. Giving Valve the means to enforce their crappy license on me without any kind of legal basis for that is a big nono and kills HL2 as possible engine choice for me.

To be honest I wish a non Unreal engine INF, for a community unfriendly reason.
I f*uckin hate all the tons of packs of mutators and maps I have to download 10-15 minutes to join the server, which wont end anyway, cuz I download slower than the f*ckin maps change. I f*ckin hate this, lol.

I wish just having the standart INF with sometimes new maps, nothing more, damn it.
Sure, the prob is, that muties like RaV... that really improoves the game wont be possible, but I´m so fed up that I personally do not care anymore.
I allready started to dislike the mutator feature of the Unreal games :mad: .
