Ah yeah, that movie. Downloaded that one ages ago, but indeed I have to admit it still gives me goosebumps.

This is my tenth year of playing Unreal. Much has changed. Luckily I've saved some screenshots from my first run through the game. (and the entire progress and comments on it). I was truly amazed by this game. And this feeling led me to playing it online with friends, at least a couple of hundred times...and its many mappacks of course; And along came a wonderful mod named "oldskool" which enabled true singleplayer/coop modes... and finally made it possible to play Unreal through UT the way it was meant to be.

Of course, things have changed. And I can never look upon the game with the same enthousiasm as I once did. But I'll always cherish Unreal, for it's brought me tons of endless games of fun and sometimes frraggin' mayhem. Unreal's atmosphere, indeed, is and has always been quite unique. One of the classics.

Though I'll always prefer UT over Unreal ;p

(Or simply the unity of both games)

Everything I have and have done was because of Unreal. It is strange how it has already been 11 years, and how big its impact has been for me.

I found the original cd back in my closet the other day. Slogan on the front "Change your reality...forever".

I vaguely remember that video but I still have the PC Gamer Unreal preview issue with the castle and the moat in it back from the 96 issue (I think that was the year). :D

Gotta love the supposition :)

I've heard from both Ryan Gordon and Epic that the client is still being worked on. And there is really no reason to think that it isn't. It hasn't been 12 years yet.

To be fair, Epic's only official comments anytime this year have been fairly . . . vague and negative. I mean,

We certainly would love to see this completed, but given the amount of time it has taken, we aren't confident about when that might happen.

sounds kindof....DNF, honestly. And we all know how that turned out ;)

......but on the positive side, on this day of celebration, us Linux folks can flawlessly install and play the game that started it all, and hell I threw a GeForce 8400GS into my projector computer for the sake of VDPAU in XBMC so I think it's time to spot the Sunspire on a 9 foot by 5 foot screen!

I was about 7 when Unreal came out, too young to ever know there was something revolutionary going on at the time. :p I never got the chance to really witness the potential of Unreal and even Unreal Tournament (which launched my gaming hobby a year later :D). I have the game now, but I can't really be arsed to play it. It wouldn't have the impact on me it would've had years ago, probably.

Looking at that trailer is funny. I'm doing my very best to imagine what it must've been like in 1998 with that game coming out, being totally revolutionary on all fronts. But I just can't. (maybe 'cause I was playing Mass Effect before checking BU)

Anyway, happy birthday Unreal!

'Amazing graphics' may look different today but the atmosphere is still one of the best I've ever experienced in a game. The first time you set foot on the planet's surface and see the sky and everything... I simply love it \o/

We were mostly playing games that were 3D corridor. Duke 3D wasn't exactly that, but gaming limitations didnt allow big open spaces. Quake and quake 2 had limited skyboxes or sky effects but never big open air scenes.

Coming out of the VR was like coming out into a different world. And the game kept going when you thought you beat the final boss (Titan) uhmnnoo,,,still got a long ways to go.

The Pupae still give me the willies.

The game won't die you can get on coop servers and so on, and there are still mod projects going on (not including me either)

Still would love to see a tech upgrade on the game if done right.

So let me
put it this way: It would probably be easier to get Unreal Tournament to
connect to a Quake server! :)

Alas, the only copy of UnrealI I have is Unreal Gold, so I'm guessing this wouldn't work (even assuming it works period, considering it's a Loki installer from 2002). I've actually had a hell of a hard time installing even UT99 on my 64-bit system (but that's partially just because I can't seem to find my own disk and was trying to use my roommate's scratched one). I've been playing through The Nameless Mod with nary a glitch with Wine, though, so I figure if I can actually *find* my Unreal Gold disc it should run fine.

I still remember I was at college and fresh out of a very shelterd mormon home and kind of abandond almost on the other side of the contry, I was bribed into not telling on my friend for sleeping with his best friends girlfriend with going on the computer.

I still remember the first time stepping out of the Vortex Rikers was the first time i'd seen what walking around outside with clouds I could see above my head for four years. My sight had taken a down turn but there I was looking around again. I knew it was just a game and all but being able to choose where you look and seeing the clouds above your head isnt the same as photos.

Quake was great but quake 2 wasnt much of an upgrade but unreal let me see colord lighting again. Even to this day those incredable colors are an insparation to much of my artwork and I still use the origonal unreal when I want to try to draw rooms and corridoors to give me an idea of lighting and how it falls on some surfaces.

So heres a great big happy relese day unreal! The game that gave me back some experiances I thought i'd lost forever, the game that let me see things i'd never been able to and the game that prevented a trained snitch snitching and in so doing prevented a pair of possable murders.

I still have the Next Generation with the Unreal cover, a while before its release, where the skaarj is fading from wireframe to full ingame model.
Man I was so giddy with excitement for Unreal after reading that, and of course it was the greatest thing I had ever played once I got it.

Those were the days.
I don't get those kind of feelings about games anymore; maybe I'm too old. :(
