Before he even talked, D'angelo told his uncle, the leader of the Barksdale crew to leave the kid alone. They thought he had already snitched about another murder he had an involvement in. They didn't listen.
D'angelo wanted them to leave Wallace alone because Wallace had plans to go back to school to better his situation.
