This is a true photographer. He took his time to line up the shot according to the rule of thirds before he asked me how I was after biting the dirt:

What is this rule of thirds ?

Ive heard people talk about the rule of thirds alot in regards to photography, myself I prefer to use this one: Golden section

Jeez i'm about halfway through that stuff and i still have no idea how to apply any of it to photography? It's sounds like a pointlessly complex way of achieving more or less the same thing... sort of... with the golden rectangle bit...

Edit - http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Golden-Ratio-in-Digital-Photography&id=769717 these seems a bit more informative. Mathematics is nice but i take photos with my hands not my calculator. ;)

Yeah its similar I guess, I always thought the rule of thirds was the easy way of sayin something similar. You will find with the golden section though when you use 2b's with one being along a, the middle is smaller than a perfect square.

We used it alot in design when I was at tafe, not only for composition both symmetrical and asymetrical but hidden inside the drawings/designs themselves. I wouldnt worry so much about the math behind it but it does give some insight into architecture that uses it where the rule of thirds page doesnt have any of that.

Canon Cameras have this "rule of thrids" built into their cameras. You have to turn it on.

It's called "grid" though.

(of course this applies to my 40D, and I can't garuntee it works on all cameras)

only on the liveview display, but i didnt shoot with that.

and you didnt really have enough room to take nice pictures most of the time :(
my wide angle lense gave me "connection to camera is bad" every other pic so i had to use my tele.

The grid is on most cameras in one form or another but having the grid on and understanding aesthetic compositional principles are two different things

somewhere; sometime?
time for another photodump.

I haven't been to a good-old-fashioned air show since I was a kid. so on a whim, me and some buddies went to a pretty good sized show that was going on at Scott Air Force Base this Saturday.

good times.
a lot of the stuff going on in the air I wasn't able to capture since we never sat down for a minute. pretty much the whole day we were walking around the runways talking to pilots and looking at the planes which were sitting out so you could get up close.

well... the "3rd shot" is a modern F/A-18 Superhornet.

now if you meant the 3rd shot from the last, then yes it's P-51 Mustang flying alongside a few other modern jets. that part of the show was like a "evolution of military flight" demonstration where they had the Mustang fly with 3 modern jets, each one newer than the one above it. so like the one on the bottom of the stack is the latest version.
