You're shooting at an ISO much higher than necessary. Can you control that with your G3, or is it all auto? The quality could've been much higher with a lower ISO.
What he fails to mention is that lowering the ISO will change the fstop and shutter speed if the camera is on full dummy mode. So just be careful with lowering the ISO, you may get more blurry images because you're used to much higher shutter speeds and more shallow dof because the aperture needs to be much lower to get the same amount of light.Just to note that your comment has made me re-evaluate how much and where I apply noise reduction.
I've been experimenting with various settings with the result that I'm now applying more noise reduction on extraction from RAW (previously zero or very little).
Thanks for pointing out the Emperor's New Clothes.![]()

If you're using it in manual mode, then just adjust accordingly and you'll be fine. I tend to run use Aperture dummy mode so I can control my DOF and let the D300 take care of the shutter speed. I leave my ISO at 200 simply because the lens' I have all open to 2.0 or 1.8 so I have no problems getting enough light even at dusk so an ISO of 200 is fine for 99.9% of the time.![]()
2.0 is really fast for a point and shoot! Most p&s I see are 3/3.2 - 3.5 at tele. D:The context was a legitimate observation about noise on a photo taken at ISO 50 and from a tripod!
My habit when I am controlling ISO manually is to force it to 50 unless I need to do otherwise. On auto, the camera heavily favours low ISO over higher shutter speed.
The Powershot G3 does have a very fast lens (for what it is) and is good for F2.0 at the wide-angle end and F3.0 at the telephoto end.
Edit: On full dummy mode it is not possible to set the ISO.
What does fast lens mean? I never got that.
