I love the clouds and how the water is almost completely black. The small lens flare doesn't fit in that well though, but still a great picture :)

Did a shoot of a fellow photographer today. She needed new photos.. probably just for her facebook.. but hey a good photo on facebook is a great way to get attention. Still working on my experimental BW processing. So far its working very well.

Not sure which ones are my favorites yet. I usually go for top 3 but I have 5. I think I need some help here. What are your thoughts?

1. Pin up dress. She had her shoulder straps tight up behind her neck in a bow time. It was very cute.

2. Loved the outfit and the gentle pose.
_MG_4085.jpg

3. Something special about this shot. Probably because I blocked the light to get this shot and I ended up with a triangle looking shaped highlight in her eyes.
_MG_4101.jpg

4. Probably her best head shot.
_MG_4126.jpg

5. Kinda Racy for her.. but its border line high fashion and I like it!

Wow. I'll go with 3 (reminds me of photo of a famous french actress) & 5 (original pose, perspective and mischievous expression).

Those are all really good. I think the best are 1 and 4.

4 is probably the best for a facebook photo.

edit: just saw this on your website. That's awesome :D

Recommended resolution displaying photos in this thread

Just looking for a recommendation for what most people consider the best/reasonable resolution for displaying photos in this thread.

I don't use a picture display site so I am constrained by whatever limits such sites impose and so I just display the photo at the maximum resolution available (post-cropping). I can do that because I'm using my ISP web space and so am not really limited in the size of the image. Not to fair on those of you on bandwidth-limited connections.

So, the question is:

  • What is the preferred resolution for display?
  • What sort of JPEG quality level should I be aiming for?
  • What sort of maximum file size should I be aiming for?

I detect freckles in those pics, Mike. Is she a redhead? ;)
Sensor noise? (or, please don't start another redhead thread!) :)

On the topic of B&W, my daughter is going to be doing a week-long course over the Summer on B&W photography.

GSABrochure said:
Students are provided with a 35mm camera for the week and will be introduced to camera handling and dark room techniques.
You will take a number of shots, thinking about composition and exposure control and then spend time in the darkroom learning about processing, developing and enlarging. You will come away from the workshop with a number of test strips and final photographs.

Sounds cool (if somewhat old school).

That really depends on the application of the photos. If it's just for web, Medium quality photoshop exported jpeg is fine @ 72 dpi. If you're hosting an image for intent of print later on, it'll need to be loss-less compression @ 300 dpi minimum. Also keep in mind that Monitor and Print sizes are not the same, 2848x4288 12 MP resolution might look huge on your monitor but that only covers slightly more than a standard 8.5x11 page @ 300 dpi.

Haha, no she has black or very dark brown hair.

I don't go any higher than 800px for forums. The idea is not to go any higher or wider than someones display in a browser window. Since most people here are gamers I will have to assume that most have large displays and can handle images well over 800px. I use a quality level of "10" in photoshop. Its very similar to 90% in other programs. With broadband being the most common choice of internet connection, the file size of your .jpg images are not as important as they once where. Less than 250k is good to shoot for. I try to shoot for 150k for images but its difficult because i don't want to sacrifice image quality.

What do you mean when you say they are text bookish? I wont take offense to it either way.

BTW I like the last shot too. It seems to have provoked the most attention. Even the model liked it the most.

The last is also my favourite....it has a dynamism and a movement in it (perhaps the skirt), and in terms of classical composition, her feet in each corner of the frame turn her legs into leading lines that pull the eye all through the image to the focal point at her face.
I also like the first and third.
In the second shot compared with the fifth, the angle and lens have made her look shorter, and all her limbs seem shorter and a little chubbier. In the last shot, the angle (and lens choice) have made her legs seem long and slender, her shoulders look really elegant. I also think she looks older in the second shot too.

OO7Mike, excuse me if I stray from photography a little but for some reason I still have the impression shot 3 reminds me of a known shot. I keep thinking of Audrey Hepburn but maybe there's a more recent personality that has similar looks.

Sorry, I guess that was a bad choice of words. I just meant that the other shots' poses and composition are ones that I have seen time and time again. The last one was a lot more experimental and it worked out really well. She has really nice legs, so you showed them off and bang, fantastic shot.:)
