Took this today as I was flying over the Gulf of Mexico. I'm pretty sure we were at around 30,000 ft.

Thanks a lot for the RAW file, promise I won't sell it :p

I was wondering, are you choosing really high sharpening settings? The people you take pictures of look fairly "soft" but everything it very sharp and defined. Do you people out manually, or do you have some magic trick to create that effect? The frames you use in some your pictures are pretty cool too actually, they really makes a big difference.

Thanks again!

I have a few editing techniques which bring out detail of an object. Some involve using the Smart Sharpening tool while others involve a process similar to what you find when processing an HDR photo. Here are a few techniques. I have them numbered so you know when one technique begins and the other ends.

1. Smart Sharpening is my tool of choice for achieving two different effects.

Adobe recommends using a sharpening setting of
300%
Radius 0.3
Remove Lens Blur

This works really well if your photo doesn't have much noise and you want to bring out details on the per pixel level. This is an awful choice if you have lots of noise as it will seem like it has only enhanced the noise of your photo.

2. For regular sharpening I use:
70%
Radius 1.0 - 3.0
Remove Lens Blur

These settings allow you to enhance the edges of your detail without enhancing the noise in your photo too much.

3. Here is another technique using a high pass filter and blending to sharpen an image.: http://www.popphoto.com/content/how-high-pass-sharpen-your-photos

4. Color Pop Sharpening using Unsharpen Mask
20%
Radius 50.0
Threshold 0

This will make your colors slightly more vibrant, highlights and shadows will get a pop. I like to use this on photos that suffer from out of focus or blurry subjects. It gives the photo an appearance of being sharp without it actually being sharper.

5. If I want to enhance the details of the background but not make my subjects look ridiculously sharp then I simply create a duplicate layer, sharpen the top layer, then I create a layer mask on the top layer and reveal the unsharpened bottom layer of the subjects by using the paintbrush with some feathering.

There is another very unusual method.. but for the life of me I cannot seem to find the video for it. Its great stuff!

First I thought it looked like an overview in StarCraft with airships flying around.

Thanks for the tips Mike, those methods are very interesting. I never used the sharpen tools very much, because they always just seemed to make my pictures more noisy, and I never got into using the smart sharpen one with all the sliders. This is great stuff, thanks again :)

I wonder if that cloud was influenced by the flame down below.

You know, at first I thought it was a bunch of space ships in our upper atmosphere ... but I couldn't get my head around the strangeness of that cloud. Then I read the caption. Thank goodness for the caption.

Canada... eh
A question to the Nikon users here: which program do you prefer to use to post-process .nef files and do you require special plug-ins and/or converters? I'm considering getting Adobe Lightroom (since it costs half for me as a student, but I'll have a go at the trial first), does any of you use it as a primary tool and are you satisfied with it?

I import all my Nikon D90 directly from the SD card into Lightroom (2)... converts it to DNG and it works for me that way perfectly.

...I know. I'm referring to the fact you lie and say that they're some sort of magical, inaccessible file that only you can read. Most people know about RAW now. That's what I find patronising.

I disagree. People may have heard of it, but people have no idea how to use them. Like he said, if they do manage to open them they will be disappointed as they appear dull and dark. Nobody not into photography is going to be able to make them look presentable into something people would want to look at.

I can definitely do that!

I only ask that you do not sell the photo or use it in any other way than to examine and edit.

Download and Edit away!

This is a RAW file from my 7d. You will need CS4 with ACR 5.6 or higher to view it. Best viewed with CS5 or Lightroom 3 with ACR 6.0 or higher.

My take on your photos while just playing around with the RAW you posted. It was fun. :)

An attempt to make it look like Fuji Velva film.

Basically a generic take on old film.
