In britain in a small town.
As long as BR and AS can be made with mods, I'll buy it (after I finish my upgrade so my rig can cope with the n-gen graphics demands). They really shouldn't leave out AS, BR I can see why, but quite a few people play AS.

As for the name, I hope Epic has the good judgment to dump the yearly naming thing. Everyone hated it from day one. I also hope they don't use some kind of idiotic alt name thing like "UT: Evolution" etc. They sould dumb. Stick with Unreal Tournment 3.
Where's 2? ;)

@newspost: KICKASS! Sounds super. Can't wait. Want shots.

I think its a good idea that the gametypes are trimmed down..what hal said is true, it wouldn't be too difficult to make mods of BR or DOM (vCTF has never been an official gametype, so Epic aren't ditching it...they never picked it up in the first place).

When you look at Csports stats (no bots) they show the most popular gametypes are:

ONS 82 000 players in the last month
DM 64 000 players
CTF 55 000 players

-then there is a massive drop before you get to Assault, so it makes sense to concentrate on these gametypes as these are what are keeping the game alive. Besides, with just 4 gametypes to map for you'd hope that the quality across all gametypes will be top notch.

Also, for the people who don't like ONS, it's worth noting that it since UT2k4 came out it has consistantly been the most popular gametype online...Epic would be foolish to drop something that most people like so much.
Now, I love DM and TDM, but I play ONS most of all, and my clan is an ONS clan so perhaps I'm biased, but I don't think you can say that DM maps suffered in UT2k4 because of ONS, the game came with A LOT of quality DM maps, and since then the vast majority of community maps seem to be DM. Most map packs (the CBPs and the recent UCMP) always have more DM or CTF maps than ONS, and while Epic did release the ECE which was purely ONS, there have been some incredibly high quality map packs that have focused on CTF and DM (the Flag Packs and the 1-on-1 pack for example).

So with the more concentrated focus on fewer gametypes, I don't think there is any danger that Epic will not give due care and attention to the core gameplay mechanics and maps of the staple gametypes; DM, CTF and now ONS.

Still, this Conquest mode sounds really interesting. The mention of "Assault like objectives" is perhaps why they decided to drop Assault ( a gametpye that I want to like, but find to spammy...a more wide open approach to objectives, like ONS, might make it more interesting to me).

Also, there's a mention in there of more "face to face combat"..which if it is done well (perhaps objectives that can't be reached with vehicles) should make it better for people who went off Onslaught because there is not enough DM style fragging in it.

One worry about Conquest is how long games will last on maps this size. I've played games of onslaught between 2 well matched teams that have gone on for over an hour..and that's just one round.

Still, from the videos that we've seen of the U3 engine, this looks as though its going to be awesome...and I'm already thinking about getting myself a new computer to run it on.

Also, agree with Selerox, no stupid UT2k6 name or whatever, it has to be UT3...there really can't be any other title

"automatic downloading of mod content that you choose, perhaps in the form of a daily download..."

I'm not really keen on the idea of daily downloads of soon-to-be-out-of-date stuff that comes on our computers.

I mean, UT2004 already constantly churns new auto-downloaded files onto our computers when we play a slightly different version of the same map (for example), and IMO it's wasting space on our PC's.

UT 2005 is vanished from our mind

GREAT!!! , more work/time on a progect = GOTY. I hope they will make new sound in general for the next ut. I noticed they used some unreal 2 sound for Pariah (cool). And what about UC (unreal championship) , You might have noticed they have used almost everything inside UC to make UT 2003/2004

W00t dude , melee Bad-ass futuristic combat mixed with ut2004 with a move developed engine (the same)

Sounds like lots of good stuff. Conquest sounds like a gamble to me - I'm not sure anyone has proven yet that gamers want longer online experiences, but perhaps this will pull some of the PlanetSide crowd which prefers a night-long game rather than a couple of hours. And dear golly do the PlanetSide crowd need help...

Auto-downloading of mods sounds odd to me, but I could see how they might be able to swing. Shame Epic always seems to fumble that stuff on the first try.

And I'm hoping for a non yearly name as well.

The only thing is if they leave the 2003, 2004, 2005 etc naming system, they'll have to make it clear in the new name that this is the latest UT. I mean, if they call it UT3 or whatever, people will be confused, where is one and two? Yeah I know fans like us won't be confused, but they must consider everyone. Not sure how they're gonna sort that one out.

Sounds great though, conquest sounds like exactly the type of gametype I've always wanted :)

Also, plenty of time for the modders to keep going on UT2004, maybe even another bous pack later this year? Or is that hoping for too much after the excellent ECE bonus stuff? Either way, I'm happy anyway :D

first of all, keep in mind that the source of that info (me) is a little sketchy, and that all the core info about 'all' the included gametypes is prolly provisional at this point. i doubt that is set in stone.

as the first to break this news (and post the irc chat), i feel i have the right to beg for scans via PM :D

secondly, keep in mind that... like it or not... no old-school ctf game has been successful for 5 years.

of the 400,000 or so fans still playing old-school ctf (ut, tribes and quake combined)... 300,000 are playing versions from 2001 or earlier. folks can kid themselves that a "new" variation on this gamepaly will suddenly be popular again... but i think that's a romantic view. most UT players themselvs (over 5 million) dont even want to play ut or ut2k4 ctf.... so dont expect them to drool over ut2006 ctf.

my point is... that the biggest phenomenon in UT brand in the past 7 years was onslaught. the demo broke 10,000 people online and maintained those figures for a long time. that made it one of the most popular online gametypes... ever.

the fact is that mainstream gamers (including those 5-10 million unreal fans) are more into tactical warfare gameplay than peter pan physics, 1337 sporty gametypes, splash damage, high respawn rates and slow moving projectiles (especially when these are all combined into a new ut, tribes or... quake).

we can easily mod back in the "classic" stuff for ut2k6/7 but dont expect the demand to be there.

what we WANT is to see a massively popular and fun ut2k6/7 game that resonates big-time with gamers (and thus makes for a great mod platform, including jacking up the ctf rank and file).

I think it's interesting how so many people in this thread seem to judge the success or failure of a certain gametype on whether they personally like it or not.

I love Assault but it's no secret to me that there are like 20 regular servers up 24/7. Hopefully Conquest will still allow us to do what we always WANTED to do in Assault.

Strangely, add classes to the players and it's rather creepily similar to XMP

If it's anything like XMP, it should be a blast.

Tse, you're pretty much on the money about the popularity of gametypes, but I still feel Epic don't place much value into a longer learning curve. It'd be great if as you gained more experience with the game, you were still rewarded after a year of playing and more.

Look at the Quake games, or Tribes, or UT Assault (the original), people are still learning new things to this day. Yet with 2k4, you play it for a month and you've pretty much seen everything. There's a cap on the learning curve.

Incidentally, it's also why I think quake movies are still going strong, while ut movies tend to be all the same. [/2cents].
