So I played up to Killer Babes Part 3. I am fine with the gameplay, though regenerating health and 2 weapon limit is bah. The humor is spot on and I know I am going to really get a kick out of the game.

The one thing I don't like is the performance. 1 enemy on the screen equals 30's fps. It also likes to randomly hitch as well. Example was when I was playing slots to raise my ego, my fps just randomly decided to nosedive to the mid 20's. Does anyone else get these weird hitches?

The thing is, compared to a lot of games that came out in 2003-2004, DNF is actually pretty decent. If you were to rate it against games of that time period, it would absolutely be a 7/10+ game.

Unfortunately, modern games have streamlined stuff like linear corridors that go on for hours and dull boss fights. Gunplay has also received much needed improvements in other games. All that leaves Duke feeling monotonous and boring in many parts wishing that you were through to the next section of the game.

Found a temporary fix for the hitching. Setting core affinity to 1 and processor priority to low for steam.exe and processor priority to high for dukeforever.exe got rid of the hitching and framerate issues for me. Checked cpu resources and both cores are hovering about 80%. It uses the cpu like a beast.

Made it to the crane puzzle and now not sure where to go, though I am sure it is right in front of me. The gunplay is mindless yes, but goddamn does it feel good. This game is definitely not a 3 IMO.

Setting core affinity on Steam, or DNF?

If I can solve the random hitching by some dual core tweaks I'll be happy as a clam. My only real gripes with the game are that and the obscene load times.

Set core affinity on steam to core 0 or 1 whatever works best for you but make sure its only one core. Have Duke use both cores. Set steam priority to low and Duke to High.

I wonder if it's a v-sync thing, like in Pure, and some other game I can't remember now.

Nah not a v-sync thing, just shoddy optimization. This is on the level of Black ops bad, but setting core affinity didn't work for Blops.

actually I was referring to his comment on load times.
Sorry, that wasn't clear.

Played it, it is nowhere near as bad as everyone is saying. Its simply a sequel, just came out late. Good mindless fun if you don't mind.

Two weapons is stupid and in a few points I ran out of ammo (roof of duke burger), and a few parts have bad level design.

Although I take back not really being able to run fast enough dodging left and right is pretty sufficient to dodge most enemy fire.

If give it a 6.5/10. I think all the bad reviews made me have a really really low expectation and this is better than what they say. I am sure many of em are saying bad only to be 'look, I just said DNF is the worst game ever!!!!".

This is such a crock. All you can really say about the humor is that it is "antiquated". Bulletstorm is MUCH more "offensive" than DNF.

As I said earlier in the thread, the problem with DNF is that people are expecting it to be "A modern shooter that happens to involve Duke Nukem", and not a Duke Nukem game.

There's a thread on Kotaku where people are honestly complaining about the game being misogynistic.

Well, yeah, of course it is. That's the entire point. Duke Nukem has always been a parody of ultra-machismo, though a tad less so with the original two platformers. But since Duke3D, Duke has been a satire of 90's ultra-macho by taking it so far over the top that it loops around and becomes hilariously ludicrous.

I mean, honestly, they complain about basically everything that's in DNF that was in Duke3D. They honestly think the game is being serious.

When comparing this as a sequel to other sequels like, say, Unreal II, DNF does its job better than Unreal II did, and Unreal II was not lambasted. Hell, there were only a handful of things that Unreal II had that were actually from the original (Dispersion Pistol, Liandri [not even until UT], Skaarj, and...well thats about it).

DNF has the same enemies, same Duke weapons, etc. It was just released way too late for it to seem decent after the waves of COD's and generic shooters that have plagued us for the past two years. IE even if the same game was released in only 8 or 9 years intstead of 10-12, it would have seemed waaaay better.

I feel the same way. The humor isn't any more or less crude than it was in DN3D. Haters gonna hate lol,,

This is exactly how I feel, too. DN3D set up exactly for the type of character Duke is in DNF.

The problem is that half the people who are complaining about Duke were wearing diapers or not even conceived when DN3D came out. DNF plays very much like a game ripped straight out of 2004, it hits right on quite a bit for that time period. Its failings can almost entirely be heaped upon the fact that modern game design has streamlined almost everything that sucks in DNF.

The game definately does not deserve such bashing. 3.5/10 at gamespot? That's frigging ridiculous and insulting to the effort of those talented people who worked for DNF. Journalists have lost it long ago, all they know is bitching and bitching now. The game has great visuals (PC here), great action packed gameplay and level design. There are some action/crazy moments that are pure 3DR style(TM). Enemies, Bosses and AI very good. And driving with the monster truck is crazy and VERY satisfying.

Seriously I don't remember any other good fun SP FPS game since HL2... maybe reviewers could tell which one was better than DNF? Bah screw them.

gamespot is kneejerk.

If they actually play through the games they review, they do it way too quick.

I mean come one, you're getting paid to put a number out of 10, are you going to risk your salary/paycheck by requesting more time to actually play the game?
