Update:

Stat points are now automatically given to each player on level up, same as the WoW system. I see this as a good thing mainly because of all those times people would mess up on putting to much or to little Strength etc. No more worrying about screwing up on a stat section! :)

Source.

2nd paragraph.

That really limits customisation, then again, diablo II was just +strength for items, +dex for max black, rest in vitality, no energy. I guess they're just trying to avoid that.

From Interview said:
When I asked him how players would feel about the next character, he grew a bit more serious, and said with emphasis, “I think players wll love the next class.”

The paladin clone?

Not much customization with the current D2 system. Pretty much what everyone does is get as little to none strength and max Vita. The core build right there.

Yeah I dunno if I like the sound of everyone of the same class having the same base stats, we'll see how it works out though, perhaps items play even more of a role towards those stats now.

I do think thats partly what RPG's are about though is trying to get the right balance and not just dumping points as soon as you level, sometimes you gotta hold out and take the hard route to receive more of a reward dumping say 5 levels of stats in there at once. Mind you I with D2 I found it more useful to do that will the skill tree not so much the character stats.

Fury had an interesting system where every player had the same base stats and only items effected stats, it worked better for multiplayer it would seem and it means with incarnations you could change your characters role with items and skilltree alone.

Lookin forward to diablo 3 though :)

As for stats/attributes, I see nothing wrong with allocating it automatically in d3. In d2, there is a singular "right" way to do it, and everything else is wrong. The only reason you wouldn't follow the formula would be if you didn't know about it.

str to meet requirements. No energy (no, not even on sorcerers). dex to meet requirements (including to max your block if you're using a shield). The rest goes into vit.

There's no customization involved beyond "gimped" and "not gimped". Even a bowazon who gets all of her damage, accuracy, and armor rating from dex, is outright gimped if you max her dex instead of vit.

It doesn't help that the character sheet outright lies to you about 10 minutes into the game as well. Not one attribute in it is guaranteed to be correct, it even misspells your character name on certain occasions.

Got to love those stats and their general irrelevance. Titan Quest had that problem as well, ended up not rolling that great an amount of points into anything but vit. Shame, but somehow inevitable, it seems.

I'm fine with the auto stats, really.
Either make the stats all-important in combination with your skilltree, and actually make different builds viable, or just make them a behind-the-scenes thing that you can't control.

I kinda likes systems like Morrowind, Fable and Oblivion had, where you could only level up the skills and their governing attributes if you had actually used those skills. It cuts down on certain lame-ass powerleveling builds that exploited an easy to train skill and dumped all the XP into relevant skills.

By extension, I might like a game where stats were relatively meaningless altogether and it's ONLY the skills and items that matter.
