Lessee: I started COD: Black Ops; installed, but haven't started L4D2; played and finished Portal 2; played a bit of Angry Birds with my son; and going to try out Bulletstorm next. I still have to copy/install UT99/2004 and NFS:U2 and some other games from the old PC. I've been splitting my recent gaming time between the PS3 and the new comp.

Found out something VERY interesting regarding my computer shutting down while I was playing TF2 or Bulletstorm. It seems that the DirectX 11 package doesn't have all of the DX 9.0c .dll files. Many brand new games still utilize those files to some extent--some a bit, others a LOT. I found this out in a post specifically discussing Bulletstorm, so I think it has some merit. Anyway, I ran the DirectX updater that came with the game, and it installed a bunch of stuff. So, I'm hoping to get a chance to see it that indeed did the trick. *Fingers Crossed* :)

I was having a problem with TF2 as well. It still crashes on exit and says its not responding, no big deal. But a couple times a night I'd get an error that forced me to restart: Failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer.

I tried updating drivers, turning off EVGA Precision, running the game using an older DirectX version. Nothing worked. BUT, it seems like I've found the solution. I'm running the game using only a single GPU. The 295 has two... and I went into the settings and told it to run in single GPU mode for TF2 and (so far) I haven't had any issues. And the game isn't super graphic intensive so it doesn't cause any noticeable difference in playability.

I haven't played TF2 that much, and the only problem I did have, was the same problem I had with Bulletstorm. Bulletstorm kept shutting down my PC in the same place in the game, so that's why the whole driver thing makes sense to me. Interestingly enough, the times when it shut down, I was hanging around this one area, ducking shooters and trying to figure out how to get past it. After installing the older DX files, when I started the game, I just plowed through the area just in case. In the end, I played for an hour or so, no problem. When it was shutting down, the longest I got to play was maybe 20 minutes at first (at the LAN party), then, literally, a minute or so once I got to that area. As for TF2, I have no idea what caused it, but I am pretty sure I wasn't getting that error.

Well, it's great we both cleared up our problems, and even better that we have a record of them, in case someone else needs help too. Have a great weekend!

WoW, didn't know you could choose to use just 1 GPU. Must have been a Sync Thing or something.Wonder if folks running in SLI or Crossfire had the same problem.

And my computer just shut down during Bulletstorm again. I had some other programs running, but nothing major, and nothing that should cause this. Guess it's time to start RMAing hardware under warranty. :(
