Hmmm, upgrade time again.. This will be a small upgrade, GC and RAM for me and PS and Case for Linda..
Check out the image..

I certainly hope you're packing the right power connections for that beast. I heard the 2 x 6pin to 8 pin PCI-E adapters were ****. I'm not getting a 280 now for that very reason. I'm just going to wait til its time for the complete overhaul. By then I'll be going for the i7's and I'll give my parents this rig. Its not like this stuff is old or anything, but it would be nice to see Crysis in all its glory :)

The Antec TPQ-850 thats already installed comes with PCI-E Connectors 2x6 Pin & 2x8 Pin. The 285 requires 2x6Pin so I should be fine power wise..

I was thinking of waiting to do the complete upgrade to the new x58 with the i7 Core but that also would mean New DDR3 Ram. Going to stick with the 680i for awhile and milk all I can from her.. Little more Ram and the GC should keep me going for quite awhile.

I'm pretty sure the 285 requires one 6-pin and one 8-pin...

Edit: Ah my mistake, its the new 280's that require 8 and 6. I'd definately go for one of those before the one you're getting tho, those babys are completely wrapped in heatsink, lol

OK, guys. Taz and BC helped me out a little shopping for new components. I plan on getting almost everything from Newegg, except the monitor. Their monitor return policy for dead pixels blows.

Here is my current list:

Case - LIAN LI PC-60BPLUSII Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Power Supply - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Motherboard - MSI X58 Platinum SLI LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

CPU - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920

Memory - CORSAIR XMS3 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X3G1600C9

Graphics - EVGA 01G-P3-1285-AR GeForce GTX 285 SC Edition 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

DVD RW - SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model SH-S223Q - OEM

Keyboard - Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 - OEM

Monitor - Acer P243WAid 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 2ms, 3000:1, 1920x1200 (WUXGA), HDMI, DVI, VGA

I plan on using the onboard for LAN and sound, my current speakers and mouse, and 3.5 if needed. I will replace those as needed/necessary in the future.

All of that would run me just under $1750 total. What do you guys think? Anything I forgot, or some flaws/inconsistencies that I missed?

Just curious how much that is going to run you... my Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM cost about $500 about 9 months ago, so I'm sure it's come down in price since... and the contrast ratio is 10000:1.
I would much rather have the 10000 colors per pixel than 3000... but in the end it's your call, just offering my thoughts.

You will love that Case.. Its worth every cent, when you see how easy the hardware goes in and how the front panel connectors work. Alum., removable Mobo Tray and good air circulation. That upgrade is pretty massive and at 1700, not to bad.. Good God will you be able to actually play at higher frame rates.. LOL:lol::lol:

Actually, Newegg has that monitor for $400. Where did you see it for $200-250, Saigon? Tiger Direct, where I was planning on ordering the Acer from, does not have that Samsung monitor for sale. The Acer is priced at $260. The Acer has a faster response time and uses less power. It has a better user rating than the Samsung, not to mention it also weighs three pounds less. I guess there are pros/cons to everything. I was more interested in price and response time.

I'm guessing that by "response time" you mean the time it takes for the screen to pop up after hitting the power button... 5ms might seem long compared 3ms or less, but the quality is worth it, and really; if I gotta start counting milliseconds when I make upgrade decisions... well, it's just gone too far and it's time to quit. ;)

Actually, it means the time it takes for pixels to change from one color to another. The two monitors in question probably have the same response time, because the Acer measures it in GTG (Gray to Gray), which means changing from one color to a different one, and the Samsung reports it in BTW (Black to White), which is how fast a the monitor can change from black to white and back again. On monitors I've been looking at, monitors with 2ms GTG usually have 5ms BTW. And those are the response times of our two monitors. Anyway, 3000:1 is still a very good contrast ratio, and worth the $140 price difference. Regardless, your monitor is very, very nice, Lurk.

BTW - the parts are ordered. Already have confirmation from Tiger Direct.

With what? No camera here. The only way I could get one is if I borrowed my sister's, and that would be *after* I get my hardware. You think I'm going to wait that long? As soon as the stuff comes in I'm going to be like a little kid opening Christmas presents.

EMachines, Gateway, Dell they are all cheap..

Good OS, hmmm
I have to say XP Pro..
According to Market Share data, in October 2007 most popular operating system was by far Windows XP followed by Mac computers and Windows Vista with smaller percents.

XP can only address up to around 2.7 Gigs of RAM. Which means, until I upgrade my OS, some of my new RAM won't be usable. I'll just wait for 7, I think.
