Decadence is alright and so is clawfists map (forget the name).
The rest of the CPB2Vol.1 DM maps...no. Some are interesting for a FFA, like reconstruct, but Achilles is definitely the best map for gameplay (1on1).
SO i think we have done a good job even if you don't agree.
Remember people do have different tastes in what they like. Even on prounreal there are some guys who like some maps while others prefere other ones.
And Achilles has nearly universal praise. I have yet to really see a complaint about that maps gameplay from nearly anyone.
Sure Achilles has great gameplay...but so does Khrono,
One item makes for great gameplay? Hardly. I made a post on the ina forums about that too, with another shield Khrono WOULD have great gameplay. With only the one 50a, it just turns into a spamfest because there isn't anything on the map to control or time. With just the addition of one more item it would turn an average 1on1 map into a great one, especially with the good layout and high amount of Z axis in the map. I'll pick this one out as an example of where one CPB2 map could be astronomically improved with just the one little addition to its gameplay.
You obviously just have too high expectations.
I just want maps that are nice looking, but emphasise they were designed with people playing them in mind. Many of the CPB2 maps sadly aren't like that. Take Griffin for example, or Argento (with its blinding glare that destroys any desire many have to want to play it) or similar.
Tbh, the retail maps arn't exactly the best maps for competitive play in the world, and are only played because they are retail maps.
Yes, and this is what killed UT2003. No good competitive maps that could be played by people, but lots of pretty static mesh hell infested maps that nobody liked (cough curse 3 cough). That has long been fixed in UT2004 (though there still is a lack of competitive maps) with maps like Spirit, Ironic (A UT2003 map though, but still good), Trite, Deck17, Corrugation etc.
Although I used to disagree with many of the pros back in the UT2003 days with regards to how maps played (like Curse 3), now that I have learnt the incredibly complex movement system and have gotton fairly good at the game, I see they were right all along (And I was wrong). As I now run tournaments locally where I live, I've found that the maps that pros play are played for a reason. Maps like Achilles and Ironic will always get into my tournament, while maps like Khrono and Mixer will not, because the way the map plays is critical to having a good balanced match (noting I chose one CPB2 map and one retail map each time as an example).
