I still can't do any Custom Character Creation the way I'd like. Epic needs to supply:

1) A version of their Male and Krall models (rigged and all) which can be opened in Max8. The ones they supplied can only be opened in Max9. Not everyone has Max9 - or can afford it - or could ever HOPE to afford it!

2) Character Creation tutorials that explain the whole process from modelling to rigging for animation, to laying out the UVWs, to exporting, to importing, to setting up the sockets, to tweaking the animations in UED, to making ragdolls, IK footstep setup, all that stuff. So far they have NOT supplied these tutorials. The video DVD included in the Collectors edition deals only with MAP creation. It says nothing about character creation.

This is critical. Without those tools, we can only guess how to do this stuff. I'm sure there are all kinds of subtle things that have to be done - for IK setup, to what to name the bones, to all kinds of things in the anim browser and stuff. I'm sure it's old hat to the people who made the games, or to the companies that can afford the fees to license the engine. But us rank and file nobodys haven't got a clue.

All we've got are the tutorials written by people who have blundered and guessed their way through the process so far. And there aren't very many of those. And again, they're no help to the people who can't open the Male and Krall files because they don't have Max9.

Without these tools, the entries in Phase1 of the CCC category are gonna be mighty limited....

As far as UDN is concerned, everything specific to the latest build of the engine that UT3 uses is available AFAIK. Everything else is about builds that have nothing to do with UT3 and have come later.

This should be sweet!

For all you people concerned about the deadline, mod sumbissions don't start until phase 2, and even if you don't submit in that phase, you can still submit later.

Few things I did notice though - The Best Mutator, Best New Game Type, Best Tool and Best New Weapon sections only seem to be open in phase 1 and all the level catagories only run until phase 3. Surely they would extend all of thsee until phase 4? or is that phase only for full mods?

Whatever the fine details are, this should be awesome! Let's just hope the mod community gets behind UT3 a little more...

With so few people playing, and even fewer modding, this should be renamed the Make Something OK Mod. The grand prize winner (or loser, depending on how you look at it) is invited to work overtime for one of the biggest game developers of their choice (Digital Extremes or some third party that works under EA) for minimum wage! YES! I can't wait to submit my 3,000 spiderman skins and take this bitch home!

Have you even read the competition info?...

Free content 4 Epic ?

Does the content you create stay yours, like how it is now, Epic/anyone else will/should not take your map/mod and cook it for the PS3 without your permission, but if you enter the competition, does what you create become Epic's property, to do with what they wish?

That is, is this just going to be a big 'free mods for PS3' grab by Epic? I know it has other benefits to entrants etc, but it just seems to me to be a good cheap way for Epic to get content for bonus packs, and mods to help make their new "Bread and Butter", the consolers happy. Yeah, Yeah, I know $1,000,000 contest, so you say it's not a "cheap way", but come on, the UE3 license doesn't actually cost Epic anything, it's not as if they were going to get that money anyway, and it's not as if the prizes from the sponsors are costing them, so it IS a cheap way to get more content, for a game that has essentially failed, without actually spending man hours and money on creating that content.

They could add a rule for that though, and you'd be disqualified if you didn't cook for the PS3. Nobody knows at this point, final rules and whatnot probably won't be revealed for a few more weeks.
