Well, we knew it'd be back for another round, and here it is: The 2008 Make Something Unreal Contest is officially on. The top prize, as always, remains an engine license - but this one is for the fancy-pants Unreal Engine 3, of course, and there's over $500,000 in other prizes.

The grand prize remains one Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) license from Epic. In addition, there are over $500,000 in cash prizes, including Intel Software Development Products and Velocity Micro PCs based upon the Intel Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform, formally codenamed "Skull Trail" with two Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processors.

Legendary mod-making contest with more than $1 million in cash and prizes to spark game development

The 2008 “$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest” will be judged in four preliminary phases and a grand final. Judging will begin in June 2008 and will conclude, with the grand final prizes being awarded, in fall 2009.

To participate, aspiring game developers create modifications (“mods”) for the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 in a wide range of categories including environments, characters, weapons, gameplay, tools, vehicles and more.

Through the contest, players can unleash their creative skills, make new content and game experiences using cutting-edge game technology, and reap rewards on many different levels. The content created for this contest will be freely available to players of the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 worldwide.

The last “$1 Million Make Something Unreal Contest” catapulted World War II shooter Red Orchestra to fame. Its development team, Tripwire Interactive, was awarded the grand prize, an Unreal Engine 3 license, for overall Best Mod and throughout the contest earned nearly $80,000 in cash and computer hardware prizes. Red Orchestra was later shipped to retail outlets worldwide.

Both too early, and too late.

Too early, because anyone who isn't a professional is still struggling to get to grips with the tools. Noone is going to have much to show by June if they start now, let's be realistic.

Too late, because many people have seen that the PC-online community is too small to form any kind of valid opinion over a UT3 mod, and thus have moved on.

The PC online community isn't that small. Just because a lot of people aren't playing UT3 online doesn't mean they don't have internet access and wouldn't download a mod.

To be honest, I would expect, that the majority of the owners of UT3 PC, already play online, and the others are playing something else - or the others are modders.

1 million if you count the Unreal Engine 3 license.

The point is: Epic hasn't given up on UT3... and in fact are trying to push it into the spotlight it deserves.

And I think they'll succeed.

Here's hoping - but then the '£50,000' UT3 tournament flopped badly, with only 16 teams signing up, and half of them not showing to compete for any matches.

June is a really restrictive date - think that anyone serious about going into games development is either working full time, or doing their exams / finals at university right now - and if they haven't already started, then after May, they've only got two months to chuck something out, if real life doesn't intervene in any way, then it's possible, but who can sit on their arse without earning a living for so long?
