hmm, imho the xp-fw is better than no fw, but it gives you only poor config and very poor control/logging. Sygate is clearly no load of junk, it worked over here for years :D

if you really want to try ipcop, i'd suggest, the "c't-server-edition" could be your thing, it's a debian-server-install, very secure and feature-rich. Really a nice thing, and free.

http://www.heise.de/kiosk/special/ct/05/04/ (german !) I have that magazine with cd, i could make a copy of the cd and send you, or upload it on my server for you to download...

Socke yes please I would appreciate if you could give me a url to download that.
All I want is the basic IPCop.
I have searched Google but cannot find a single place that offers me a simple download, everything to do with IPCop is "This page cannot be displayed" or "GatewayTimeout"

What I am going to try though is delete Cygate, remove it completely form the Registry etc, the install it again from scratch and see what happens, as I cannot beleive a program can be so stupid.
As a normal firewall it work great as my wife goes through the Server onto the Internet while my PC is hooked through the other Server (Win2k).

What has happened now is I cannot even access the website on the Xp Server anymore http://proasm.servegame.com it was working perfectly and now its not.
The IP is updating via No-IP ok and I can access it via my PC with http://192.168.0.1 but across the internet it does not work so this Sygate has lost all its marbles :)

Thanks shov3l, hell that sites coming in here like a local site :)
Somehow the path to CA is good for some reason and NY also good, but the rest of USA it sucks big time.

last night I uninstalled Sygate completely, even went into my Registry and removed everythiong to do with Sygate.
Rebooted and reinstalled Sygate from scratch.
Everything that popped up on the screen I said "Allow", even those icons that come up in its window I said "Allow" for all of them.
Went onto the net and EVERYTHING I said "Allow" for its popups - regardless.
Went ito the "Applications" menu and set EVERYTHING in that menu to "Allow"
Theoretically I set so many things to "Allow" that it should be like one HUGE hole.
After all this it still "Blocks" all NetworkNeighborhood Trafic.
Even though it says everything is "Allow" to do with its Files and Printers etc... it still "Blocks" anything and everything to do with other PC's on the LAN.
So I downloaded a new copy and started from scratch.... same thing.
Btw... that computer is also set for "Internet Connection Sharing" to allow my wife through onto the internet, not sure if thats causing anything, although I doubt it as a switched that option off and it still did the same.
Ok, IPCop is "in" - let me go try it :)

of course you need 2 network cards on the box
Why 2 ?
The Xp server only has one, but the Win2K server has 2 and if I do use that one, can I uninstall IP-Cop ?
My Win2K server currently uses Kerio WinroutePro which I would like to dump as its a very complicated application to use.
Will IP-Cop work with NAT and allow other PC's onto the Internet without having to refrain to "Internet Connection Sharing" as I hate that :)

*** Edit ***
Smoothwall - what is that like ?
I'm busy downloading it atm.

ZoneAlarm Pro

Anyone ever tried this ?
Well if you haven't, give it a go as this is what I now call a user friendly application and scores 10/10.

From the instance I installed it, it immediately detected my LAN and asked if I wanted to add my LAN into a Network Trusted Zone - I said yes.
Next it detected that I had some kind of Dial-up connection and made that my default. (its actually a Dial-up Wireless, but close enough).
Otherwise it works the same as Sygate only its "intelligent" :)

I'm using version 5 as they say in the forums that version 6 is a bit buggy, but so far I'm impressed ;)

Unfortunately the "Free" version does not support the LAN option and I'm now wondering if its not the same with Sygate and thats why its not working properly.

$50 is a bit steep for this but if it does the job then so be it.

ipcop turns the pc installed on to a router gateway firewall via nat it does dhcp to the lan and also from modem also can be configured for statip wan ip if your modem is a bridge t u need 2 nics because it does the ics and by adding a 3rd nic u can put a pc in the dmz zone such as a server but its not really neccesary because you can forward ports from any lan ip via the web interface .

smoothwall is basically the same thing i just prefer ipcop but have used both

so your network would be in this order modem---->ipcop---->switch--->lan pc's

Ok that is what I'm looking for on my ADSL server as thats exactly whats there atm but using Winroute Pro and although this is a top of the range application, it is a friggin nightmare to understand and needs a network specialist to operate as you need to configure ports one at a time so IPCop sounds good.

This ZoneAlarm also has a NAT option but I cannot get it to work, possibly because it needs a 2nd nic also and does not understand a dial-up.

Tomorrow I'll remove my Winroute pro and try this IPCop and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the info.

Well I took a day off today and fiddled all day with various firewalls.
Unfortunately this IPCop had a "Error 20" when I installed it and even after another download from somewhere else, it still had the same error so I could not judge it.
However I tried several other things including a new Winroute which is very nice as it seems all companies are now following the "Sygate" way of doing things although the first to do it this way was McAfee but they wanted $499 for theirs at the time so I did not even look at it.

With not being able to judge IPCop, I've ended up with ZoneAlarm Pro as its the best of the bunch that I've seen and also has a NAT option although you still have to set the OS to "Internet Connection Sharing" which I didn't really want to do but had no option.
Anyway its working and working well and I now also have full LAN access of all PC's regardless of their OS, even the Win2k one is being seen by the Xp machines which is cool.

Is there only a .iso version of IPCop as its seems such a waste of a CD for only 28 megs.
An ordinary zip install would be great.

ipcop is a standalone os and must be installed on a machine solely dedicated to running ipcop so setup is done via booting from the cd you burned thats why its an iso image and no zip

When u have a VLK version but a pirated key u can change the key with the procedure below and change it to DY6BF-P8F8X-B8HXC-4JQ3K-TQTVM

I have a VLK MSDN Universal subscrption so this key is deffo not pirate.

BUT if you have an OEM or Retail Version and used a hack or something to fake an aktivation, this won't work. In this case let me know and I send u an image with the original VLK version.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
4. In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
5. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
6. Click Start, and then click Run.
7. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

9. Click Change Product key.
10. Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.
