hmm, imho the xp-fw is better than no fw, but it gives you only poor config and very poor control/logging. Sygate is clearly no load of junk, it worked over here for years
if you really want to try ipcop, i'd suggest, the "c't-server-edition" could be your thing, it's a debian-server-install, very secure and feature-rich. Really a nice thing, and free.
