Sure hope boats aren't left out either
For me, personally, I can't emphasize this enough. I'm on 56k and I don't play anything but bot matches, and even with the pretty crappy bots as they are now, it's about all I've got. I realize it was never the intent nor the goal of the Sentry team to create a single player game, but I really would appreciate some strong AI showing in the next iteration of Infiltration.

I'm very pleased to see that SS are testing vehicles, and I'm pretty sure they won't make the mistakes other games have made in the past.

Arethusa what is your average ping? I am curious because I connect on dial-up at 26400 and get a ping around 275-300 as long as there are no more than 16 people on a server. Yes that is a terrible ping but I manage to get kills, help the team and have fun. I do a lot of support work such as sniping, supression fire and such.

I honestly can't understand why aircraft shouldn't be player controlled..
Well, the simple fact that in a battle, that kind of firepower shouldn't be availible every 2 minutes, or even 15 minutes. In the length of most online games, aircraft shouldn't really even be seen more than twice. Aircraft are dispatched only in highly organized affairs, not wandering all over the place.
If I have to deal with a helicopter buzzing around every 2 minutes, I'm going to be pretty unhappy with an 'as real as it gets' tag.

(Also, boat = bot? :p )

lol. I like the idea Sentry has to have pilots and infantry men. I was thinking of that while reading the first posts and then crushed when Beppo mentioned they had already though of it. If you wanted it to be real. You'd need a way to distinguish which branch of the military you server under in order to control specific vehicles and equipment you have acces to. So in your player menu I"m guessing you'll have to chose whether your Army, Air Force or Navy. Maybe I'm off the mark but I'm thinking its something along those lines.

Another thing. Inf is all about a military with no country. You have access to all countries weapons. How will the vehicles best represent all the militaries across the globe or will it focus on American Russian Vehicles?

Yeah, a Canadian SOMETHING would be neat and very original. I mean, really, who has done canadian military stuff? Our LAVIII is pretty much the same as a stryker, but it would be original. :p

Ok Yurch, I see your point :) It could be so much fun to fly those helos though :( I love em in JO and with Inf realism the helos coud be awesome.

Scripted APCs and helos could be used as a method of spawning players. For instance in some attack scenario the attacking team would spawn inside couple of APCs and they could drive to random spots on the map and drop the players there. Heck even those "spawn vehicles" could be player controlled *dreams on* :)

If the vehicles will remain in the final product I hope they won't miraculously respawn if destroyed.

i dont think that microsoft flight sim + need for speed underground (well i cant think of a game that gets you to simulate APCs, tanks etc :D ) + inf is a good blend personally ;) this mod should stay with infantry combat with maybe 1-2 vehicles (probably humvees with MGs mounted on them and something else small like that) if you ask me. itd turn into bf if we had all 3 armed forces portrayed - ie more arcadish (its not a bad thing, just not a very inf thing).

As said before, the main focus of INF will stay on the Infantry battle. Vehicles will only be used in infantry support roles, such as transports. The Kiowa was 'just' a chopper we wanted to test out and it can be used as recon craft or whatever to support the infantry. M113 and Fuchs are 100% APCs (Armored Personnel Carriers) that only have a MG mounted for a gunner. A HMMWV can be a Pickup version, have a MG or even an Avenger system mounted. Stuff like that.

To the Kiowa... unfortunately the chopper vehicle class of UT2k4 is not really that realistic cause the applied forces are not applied depending on the rotors main axis rotation at all. They are always using the worlds up axis for up and down for example... not the rotors axis as they should. Stuff you can get around but you need to do the forces calcs all by yourself then and this means that you can almost script the whole chopper physics yourself to avoid the engine codes working against the script codes. So the standard chopper engine codes within UT2k4 are not designed for a realistic chopper flight model unfortunately.

To the character stuff...
again, just a short info before you guys start to develop your own ideas on how we are doing things without knowing what we actually do and how ;)
Ok, what I want to tell right now is only the basics... no details.
We will not have a 'Select your branch of service' (Army, Navy, AirForce) but we will have a 'Select your 'special' team' where team is defined by the type of included individuals. So you can name it some sort of class system but you do not select your one player type, you select a group.
Without spoiling any further details I can say that you will be able to play ie a 2 vs 2 match with a bunch of folks running around on the map then... not only the 4 guys that would normally be there. But now I really stop to give out infos, even if you guys make your own thoughts out of this again ;)

Can we have some Landrovers and UAZ jeeps? I'm mighty sick of just "Blackhawks & HMMWVs" in mods and games today. For helicopters, I'd still prefer to leave them to a flight sim, but how about a Mi-8 or Mi-17 for transport or a Kamov KA-60 rigged up for light attack and reconaissance if you want a counterpart for the OHG-58??

I would like to see a list of transport vehicals used by other countries. I know some countries use US equipment but what else is out there.

Vehicles certainly could enhance gameplay. I guess you would have to be careful about unbalancing the game. Obviously having Apache helicopters and AC-130's probably wouldn't be a good idea, but Humvee's and Blackhawks could be useful. Obviously you couldn't use them on small maps, probably EP would be about as small as you would want for a map with a vehicle.

However, I would like to see a degree of realism, especially wrt to helicopters. They are difficult to fly and I think (as Beppo has said) the UT4K helo's don't have a good flight model. It would be unrealistic for any old Joe to jump in one and fly it around.

Tanks would be fun too, provided we had good AT weapons. The main gun wouldn't be all that useful against individuals, and the MG's wouldn't be as easy to use as the Minimi (I'm assuming). It would be neat to perhaps use one to ferret out a sniper, using spotters to direct fire. Likewise it would be fun to stalk one with a TOW.

Can't wait until the next verson!

my guess would be that machine guns on tank would be easier to use than hand carried ones, since theyre really emplaced on the tank - ie far less recoil felt. though with the tank moving it would be adequately hard.

but i hold my ideals - no tanks. cars (ie 4WDs) only.

I like the idea of anti-tank tactics in inf, now add a homing system like eryx and see those hummers and btr60 apcs get blown in a few extra non-functional peices. But there shouldn't be vehicles in every map, infantry vs infantry is pretty damn fun to. Beppo you got any plans on using hedps for the grenade launchers?
