@Brizz:
I'm not sure about it, but I'm pretty positive that you can join a 2225 server with a vanilla client installation and a 2225 client can join a vanilla server. But actually neither of us will be willing to downgrade a server/client to test it ;).

@Neme:
Epic has been paying attention that people do not _have_ to patch, I agree that it's stupid with exploits, they should be releasing fixes anyways. With UT2003 they kinda did that through UTSecure. UTSecure was "official", but still external and thus easier to break than a hardcoded protection.

Actually, I KNOW that 2199 at the very least broke network compatibility.

Well, it's official, the game does require that the disc is in the drive, even the DVD version.

Does anyone know where to get a no-cd crack?

(if this is not allowed sorry in advance. :eek: )

You could always grab an image of the disc (if you have the drive space) and map it as another drive with the subst command (under win) or mount the image as another filesystem (mac & linux.)

Inconvenient? Yes.
Faster than reading from the cd? Yes.
Completely safe? Yes.
Respects copyright? What, do I look like a lawyer?

Could you repeat that, in English?

I am kind of computer dumb when it comes to stuff like subst command.

Thanks in advance. :)

Tim Sweeny has said in an old UT2k3 mods thread that its prefectly legal to crack the game if you own it. For us mod developers its something I do. I have to start UT2k3 about 50 times a day (you know complie code, test the code, find bug, fix bug, recomplie, re-test, repeate about 20 times). So waiting for the CD to spin up each time is a bad thing....

Sure thing; get some software to make an image of the cd(s) or dvd; I think Nero can handle it. Then, at the command prompt, type:

subst <virtual drive name> <path to file>

i.e.

subst f: c:\games\ut2k4.iso

will make c:\games\ut2k4.iso appear as f drive on your computer. Now, I don't know how to make the computer think it's a cd drive. I'm sure it's possible, though... I'm Mr. Unix, not Mr. Windows, so maybe one of you windows-saavy fellas can provide more info?

I'm not really good at making images (I've never done it), but I think you can use Daemon tools for it. It makes an extra drive on your PC.

Subst won't work for something like this. Subst works on the file-level, not the drive-level, which is what we need for the copy-protection-detection to work. Also, it's only possible to subst to a directory, not a specific file. What we need for something like this to work is a virtual drive sort of software, a copy-protection emulator of sorts, etc.

Yea, and for those of us who are getting the DVD, having that image on the drive could be very detrimental to HDD space. The DVD ROM drive is my second drive anyway. Again I say, that disc is staying in there for a long time.

I'm getting the dvd, and 5.5G is squat for disk space for me. But, knowing me, I won't bother taking the disc out of the drive unless it's really noisy.

The server in the house has 3/4 of a terrabyte, and I suppose I could net mount it there, but there's no point really, when I have a CD Burner I rarely use as of late, and a DVD rom I never use.

Are you serious? An actual retail product that allows you to bypass the NoCD protection? For sale at CompUSA no less?:con:

um yea there are programs that could be used to bypass such protections...

They promise to allow you to store the cds contents on the hard drive, and mount that data into a virtual cd-rom

What was sweet was on old blizzard games they would let you spawn on or two copies. It would be nice for UT to do something like that for LAN play, but break online function so only people at a LAN can play. Heck limit the player models and number of binds to inspire people to buy thier own. LANS sell games after all. It would probably be a programing nightmare though...just a random hungover thought...that would be sweet.
Unless they changed it between 2k3 and 2k4, you can do that. You cant use one CD key to play online with 4 different computers for example, but you can play as many computers on a LAN as you want, with just a single key.

You know what's weird EvilDrWong? My roommates and I all installed the same copy of UT2K3 on our computers, with the same CD key, and we played online on the same servers CONSTANTLY. Not once did we have a problem.

Here's the funny part though... Whenever we tried to load up a LAN game for the the three of us, one would always get kicked due to "invalid CD key."

Probably cause you were advertising the sever (connecting to the main network) which strictly validates cdkeys.

clone cd, and deamon tools is a good idea if you dont care about taking up 2-5gig. running clone cd makes a a .cue file of the cd then you use deamon tool to make a fake cd drive and you connect the fake drive to the .cue file and you dont need cd. but i dunno clone cd seems to be pretty crappy these days.. as in it tends to not make the cue.
