RAv3 style experimentation in HL2

Yes, please.
This is kinda odd, I'm preiodically getting sputtering in HL2, simmilar to the kind of thing OICW mentioned, except the game never actually crashes. It doesn't have anything to do with Yurch's mod, it happens in vanilla HL2. It acts as if some program running in the background is lagging it up; it will run perfectly smoothly for 20-30 minutes, then it will start sputtering as if McAfee or Windows or some **** like that is trying to cut into your RAM. After a minute, it will go away (usually) but then it will come back 20-30 minutes later. The odd thing is, I had allready shut down all the background programs before I started the game up. The only real suspect background program running when I play HL2 is steam... ... ...

Anyway yeah, the "F.E.A.R." demo was very over-rated. Every mainstream gaming media preview of it raved about how smart the AI was, when all it really offered was the ability to jump out windows, crawl under shelves, etc. Of course, the AI uses these stunts in a completely stupid manner, opting to break cover just to climb over a desk in the middle of the room, merely for the sake of pulling the stunt, in total disregard for how it leaves the soldier completely vulnerable to your fire, and offers no tactical advantage whatsoever. If jumping out of windows was all it took to make you a genius of modern combat, then Eric Clapton's kid would be the next General Patton.

Yes every game should have ironsights, what can you do? But wait for a mod ;)

I would wager a fair amount all those sequences in FEAR were scripted. I mean it was a 10 min demo. Anyhow I'd be tempted to play the real FEAR game just cause it'd be like Max Payne in first person (just with aliens in place of mafia.) I mean not only do they rip off the bullet time, they rip off his scary dreams/hallucinations.

LOL, I actually thought about not saying the Clapton joke, cause I thought someone might be offended, but then I was like "wait a sec, this is the INF forums, people will love it." As for Patton, I just used him as an example cause I couldn't think of any other military geniuses off the top of my head.

As for FEAR's plot, I think the badguys are supposed to be ghosts, not aliens. Basically, the main character, and most of the soldiers you fight, are supposed to be genetically engineered "super soldiers" designed to respond to psychic commands from their superiors. I think the idea is that some kind of evil spirit from the past is taking control of the soldiers via the psychic link, and the strange hallucinations the main character sees is supposed to be the spirit trying to break him down and take control. Sure, it's convoluted, but I give them credit for atleast being original.

Hey yurch, I built a new system and thought I'd get back into IASP. Everything works fine until I either quicksave or reach a checkpoint, at which point the game crashes. It says something about not being able to write the bitmap snapshot (i.e. the little preview picture that goes beside all the save games). Disabling autosave and not quicksaving is a workaround, but of course, that makes me have to restart maps from the beginning if I die.

Any idea what could be causing that? I googled around, and it looks like a few other mods have the problem, but I didn't find any solutions.

Chances are the mod needs a rebuild with one of the new steam verisons or just needs to be 'redone'.

Unfortunately, I had a harddrive crash several months ago and I lost most everything related to HL2, including whatever I used to develop code/anims on it. I don't believe I have a backup of the singleplayer. (I wasn't happy with it) The multiplayer had much more in the way of accurate weapon and character control, and was far better to play with in general. A shame I never got to show people that, but it really was far too out there to really have fun with. Mute may have a backup of the source for that, but it's been too long since anyone did anything with it.

that's too bad. I know someone has a mod for source that's bassically the next logical step up from what you were doing, and he was going on and on about "how original" the concept was bragging that it only took 3 days to write ect ect. I wanted to show him your work, but i couldn't remember what it was called, or where i found it.

Iron sights alone aren't hard at all. One of the reasons I didn't do so much with the singleplayer is (or was?) that there isn't an actual animated player object thing so you can't have an accurate frame of reference for stuff like lean.

I've found files that you could run (not compile) IAMP with, but I don't know if they will actually work. I can't get steam to do it's download crap right now, so there's no way for me to test.

Got steam working. Same error here, nathan. I notice, for some reason, that my folders are permanently marked read only(are yours?), but I'm not sure if any of us feel like trying this kind of shit.

Seems like all my folders have that faded checkmark. Doesn't stop me from altering/deleting anything, so *shrug*.

Most likely. A new multi mod was made every 3 seconds for halflife. I know hostile intent was supposed to have them, but I don't know if that ever released.

Unless you meant for the single player.

Hostile Intent does have them. It's a boring mod.

I reinstalled INF yesterday. Humans versus bots is still a lot of fun.
