But what did the anc promise to the people this time?
Actually the whole "promise" thing is quite a joke.
Originally in 1995, they promised all "previously disadvantaged" a telephone.
So the monopoly telcoms (Telkom) were instructed to erect poles and wireless telephones throughout the rural area's.
This was duly done and by 1998 they had connected 2.5 million new people.
By 1999 these people which never paid their phone bills as they say the Goverment "gave" them these telephones for free, they owed the Telkom something like 400 million bucks.
As it was General Elections they were told under no circumstances do you cut the people off.
So they raised the prices of all Internet connections (ADSL) and local phone charges to the towns and cities.
After the election, the Telkom Investors (49% USA) said they cannot survive and unless these people are cut they are pulling out.
Guess what, suddenly 3 million odd people ran out of telephones and after many strikes, toy toying, and marches, all the promises started again, but those have not been forfilled yet.
The next thing they promised everyone was free Electricity.
So the monoploy Eskom were instructed to electrify all the rural areas' which they did and every Tom, Dick and Harry leached onto the Electrical points and had free electricity for themselves to the point Koeberg could not supply and soon all the Electricity points were shut down, again with a zillion marches etc etc.
This happened with "Free Schooling" also.
Their latest "promise" is free water for everyone.
Watch all the dams and rivers run dry in a year or 2, and we import bottled water from the US :)
So at the current rate of "promises" by the year 2015 all the people will be back where they were in 1995
