Approx the biggest thing is take lots of pictures, and I don't mean shooting almost random like. See something interesting shoot it. Try different angles, different speeds, mess with the depth of field.
Also shoot things that are interesting and see what can be done to make the interesting. Extreme close up, light the foreground and over expose by a stop.

For me I usually photograph horses at western game shows. Took me about a year to get good enough and I am still learning. Still a hit and miss at times but if the rider and horse is doing what they are supposed to be doing I'll get them 95% of the time. Selling about 30 prints a year pays for the paper and ink. I shoot lots though.
Also find people who photography you find interesting and figure out why you find it interesting. What are you doing. What don't you like. Also do exactly what Jafo did, he saw something you did that he liked and asked how the hell you did it.
