I've been looking at getting a DSLR, but don't want to spend too much right off the bat. Since I've never really been into photography in any serious way, I'm a bit illiterate on details. I'm looking to get into it about $500 or so for a basic camera/lens. I am currently leaning towards the Sony DSLR-A200K or A300K. The A300K is about $70-100 more but features a DT lens support and includes a DT lens. Is it worth my money to spend the extra bucks? I mean, I just simply want to have a decent camera that gives me more control over the shot than what most Digital point-and-shoot types do. I'm not inspiring to be the next Ansel Adams or anything, lol.

People may well disagree with me on this, but I'd steer clear of Sony, purely because they (probably) don't have the same range of lenses available that Canon or Nikon do. Personally I'd opt for one of the entry level Canon or Nikonss.

I've never used one of the Sony DSLR's but I have a compact Sony superzoom camera, which is more or less a point and shoot camera, but you have the ability to play with the settings quite a bit. If Sony have put these features into a point and shoot, then it's very likely that they exist on their DSLR's. I can't be certain of this, but the best way to choose is go read reviews on the camera and go to a shop where you can try it out.

The new Sony DSLR's use a minolta lens mount, so you would have a wider range of available lenses.

A couple of reasons for interest in the Sony is the use of Minolta lens, as well as it is rated the best stability/vibration control in that price range. I have an unsteady hand, so you can see where this would be very helpful.

I found this passage regarding the DT lens technology:

The DT lenses will also offer a degree of flexibility in both bright and low light conditions. The iris within the various lenses is made to form a smooth round aperture that creates defocused compositions. According to Konica Minolta, the circular aperture will smooth out gradations and create a more naturalistic reproduction of the scene, particularly in direct light. In compromised lighting, when flash assistance is necessary, the lenses contain a “distance encoder” that uses an ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) system to interpret the subject’s distance and set the flash illumination level and exposure values appropriately, when using either the in-camera flash or an external unit.

I appreciate the information from you folks. I picked up the Sony DSLRA300K at a local shop this afternoon. Considering that I am a total photography noob, it sounds like it will be a fairly straightforward camera with plenty of added power when I may need it. All the reviews I read were very positive, and the guy at the store said that this Sony model was selling like hotcakes against the comparable Canons, Nikons, etc. He also said that Sony made a lot of under the hood changes from the A200K model. Time will tell if I made a good or bad choice.

Tell me what you think. I've only messed with the sat a bit. Just not sure if I like it at all... I feel if it's almost to busy.

It probably needs more contrast. Try decreasing gamma a little to augment the shadows or try to find the sweet spot using levels. Then try increasing saturation.

I agree with Azura's statements.

I like that there is a lot going on in the image. The composition and subject matter is very unique. My problem with the image is that its too soft and it lacks contrast which will help separate certain aspects of the image from the others. A little bit more post work could really make it shine.

I haven't really had much time this week to play with my new toy, but I did get out to the west end of the Vegas area today. Too bad it was so darned cloudy, and most of the areas I had time to hit just did not have good vantage points for photographing the awesome mountains.

I need more test subjects. If the weather is permitting, I will try to get down to the Strip this next weekend.

This one shot was the best I got today. Yeah, I spiced it up a bit in Lightroom, as the original was rather dull.

So I fixed my XTI. Canon Parts had all the items I needed.
Total cost was $110. Price includes shipping and 8 parts.

The camera was easy to take apart. Swapping the LCD is easy. Swapping the LCD and back light was not. Lucky for me I bought an additional circuit controller board for the rear of the camera. ($20) I attached all the new parts and the camera fired up. Did some test shooting and it works great!

I'm considering doing digital camera repair on the side. I really enjoyed the work.

I'm currently selling the XTI for $450 with 3 batteries and a grip. I just bought a 40d so the XTI needs to go. My 20d will be sold soon as well. Soon as I find that canon sends me the battery cover it will sell for $250
