Yeh gotta say, do tell how you did it.
Every time I have processed a HDR image in photomatix and every time I have seen other examples of the work there have been tell tail artifacts taking away from the image (things like halos around trees)
Have you just processed these things out, or have you got some sort of workflow that gets around these errors?

Honestly I'm not a fan of the common "over the top" processing I see on most HDR or quasi HDR shots. Too much detail, the halo effects, not a lot of flow or subject focus.

I do like this shot though!

Wow! So many replies. Like 007mike says, not too many people are fans of extreme hdr so im surprised the amount of replies. Thanks everyone:) Not too many of my friends likes my photos:(

The 'haloing' effect i've noticed too. I seem to notice this when trying hdr on bright sunny blue sky days. The clouds, skies or trees within the sky never seem to come out right. The best time is to try it on cloudy, overcast days. This gives me the best results which always looks great. To get the overall picture done is all done in photmatix. Just mess with the details enhancer, strength and light smoothing. Those are the 3 main tweaks I use 90% of the time. Once in a while i'll tweak the tone section but that is rare. I try to make sure I get all the shadow and contrast info good before I do the final touch-ups in PS. In PS I then do the usual with multiple mask layering of my images, levels, tonal contrast, dodging'n'burning, saturation, colors....blah, blah, blah.

Here are some good tutorial videos if anyone is interested.

There is this other video ive seen a while back which was very informative but now I cant find it:mad:

One way to clear out those halos which works best for me is to use the burn tool in PS and set it to highlights, adjust the percentages then just gently darken up the halos. I've done this on many of my photos with great results.

Jackal says its the camera, these photos can be achieved with many cheaper cameras. Its just the 1d makes it easier for me (and way more fun:D ) With my 30D I was only able to bracket 3 shots which really sucked if I wished to get a lot of exposure range. If I wanted more bracketed shots I had to adjust the camera again and bang out the 3 shots to gain more range. By doing this my camera would wobble and knock it out a hair which then would be noticed in photomatix. Also in the time it took to make the 2nd adjustment and wait for it to settle down, the clouds would have moved enough which gave me ghosting in my images. That sucked! The 1D gives me 7 bracketed shots @10fps speed with MLU (mirror lock up) so my camera would'nt wobble from mirror slap. AND, on snow covered days I would put on HTP (highlight tone prioroty) to gain more info on high contrasty areas.

I'm a photonoob so that's probably why I fall for it. I just really love the way it looks, makes it stand out from the typical crowd.
I really like it too. I just recently started to perfect my hdr. I don't do extreme hdr all the time. Sometimes I do it right to bring in all the detail in the highlights and shadows and keep it natural looking just like that photo you linked.

Didn't realise the 1ds had 7 bracket shots!

Will be sticking with my 450D for a long while to come though. Just wish I had some more interesting scenery to play about with it some more.
Nikons offer 9 shots:(

Sometimes I do this 'surreal' hdr cause we don't have too many nice scenics here in new joizey. So it adds to the dullness of the photos and makes them interesting;)
