The MotherShip returns!

Esp. the older players amongst us may remember a place where historical battles happened, a place where the good and the evil met, a place where only the strongest survived - that mystical place once was called The Jailbreak MotherShip.

I have met QAPete in our IRC channel today and he has changed the link on the BeyondUnreal mainpage, now pointing towards our server and thus I took the opportunity to rename that server from "Sexmachine's blah blah" into "Jailbreak MotherShip Server". Everything else stays the same, it's just the name (a reminiscence to LarryStorch and of course QAPete) that has changed and eventually that'll attract some new players as well. So prepare to visit these holy grounds and bring the myth back to life. :D

What's the BUFPack?

I thought I had about everything JBIII related already, but I guess not.

The BUF pack is a replacement weapon mod. It's not Jailbreak specific so isn't included in the base install. It's just somethig that's run on the server from time to time.

What about the "real" MotherShip server?
... the "real" (JB) MotherShip went down in autumn 2002 and a few month later QAPete posted some sort of 'final news' about the whole mothership collective over here.

Oh and Ren, I really love your installed UT components - that's how a perfect UT installation has to look like. ;)

... nice hint, but what exactly is 'later than usual' ?
Well... I was thinking I would get back to my place around 12pm monday, which would mean close to 12 midnight for you Euros. But I'm not sure I can now anyway. Though I've made sure my brother's and mother's computers both have UT and JB + map packs on them (thats where I am at the moment), so I still may join on 56k at the normal time of 8... but we'll see I guess. Means I won't be on gamevoice though. -sigh-

As mentioned above, you should download and install it to be able to configure your weapon priorities ("Weapon Priority" in the Mod menu). Just the "BUF Bonus Pack Mutator" is enough, you don't need the original BUF Pack if you only want to play Jailbreak.

Mothership was full, so I had a quick go on the "UT.thegamebox.net" server or whatever it's called (it gets the best ping for me). Had one good game but then kept getting disconnected. Ah the joys of 56k... I remember well. I think that gamebox server is stuck on Alcatraz (edit: pun not intended) because it tries to load Basmma and fails, and switches back to Alcatraz.

...a pity they didn't just join one of the other servers as a pastime until they could join the MotherShip. (Yeah, I know, I was one of those too. :D)

I wonder whether there'd be a technical way to "interconnect" Jailbreak servers in a way that'd make people more inclined to join an empty server when there's another one that's crowded already. Suggestions are welcome...

I joined early but got some sound problems to solve and had to leave but trying to join later the server was full. :shake:
I then joined the X-Treme server and CoolDude joined me but nobody else. After 30 min I went to check again but it was still full. :shake:

It is nice to see all the new players but that also means that the regular players can not join in the sunday madness at times. :(

hrm wonder if there's a way to code it to where if the server is full it'll give you like a 10 second delay with a "Redirecting you to overflow server" or "server 2" or somethin message, then... well... self explanatory...

when it comes to technical stuff im unl33t so i have no clue what the limitations are...

From the MPZ portal map, I know that you can certainly redirect someone via an actor. I don't know about the technical details of this before "play" actually begins though.

One thing that might be interesting is redirecting players from a full server to a different one, but also popping up a message box asking a certain number of players to redirect, and having a yes or no type of thing. It could do this if there is a full server, and a few players on the "overflow" server, in an attempt to get a reasonable number of players on both, once there were enough (I would imagine 6 would be good) players on both servers, it could return to simply redirecting players from the main server if it was full.

That all seems a little far-fetched technically though. Perhaps a simple solution could be a mutator on the mothership that would put up a "server is getting full, consider moving to unreal://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to keep player numbers balanced", or something along the lines of that.

Birelli i was just playin with some ppl in Vin's server... and it was Cavern III or whatever with the one screen that shows posts from this forum and another that shows a player's console

well seemingly out of nowhere your name popped in sayin somethin like "are you guys in a map or somethin?" "oh ok no wonder your comments make no sense"

so of course we lose again (loque was raping the humans for awhile) and i notice your name not on the scoreboard, and nobody claimed that you were PMing them or anythin in IRC...

idunno just an interesting thing, kinda freaked me the hell out to have a phantom message appearing on the console screen in the jail heh...

btw another possibility could be to simply lower the max players for the servers... idunno i guarantee ppl wouldnt like the idea of seemingly discouraging more ppl from playing but if the server's full and there's more ppl it could just become accepted that you join a different server, so there could be 2 servers goin every time... yea im sure mosta you would hiss at me for suggesting this but it would likely get the job done at the obvious cost of having fewer players playing at once (altho my video card would love me long time :p )

If one server is full I always join another one... no big loss for me seeing the Mothership seems to be thr furthest away (ping-wise) - I'm happy to join another one... as long as it's not IG (I'll save my limited IG playability for X-treme-Gaming's fragfest) :).
