Lost in your eyes
I was recently playing Unreal Gold with a good friend of mine, (Yes, Unreal, but this is a general topic *sparked* by Unreal Gold) and he kept on complaining about how I had no honor (Though I must say, my skills have improved substantially, though I'd still be pwned a FragBU). Things he disliked:
-After I killed him, I still had full health and shield (200 and 200, respectively) as well as a bunch of weapons. I proceeded to kill him with said aquired items. No honor. Pheh.
-Shot him behind his back. Should he have been staring at that well? Meh,.
Personally, I think it's rediculously. I mean besides spawn camping, I don't think there's a whole lot going on that isn't fair.

What's your take on honor in Deathmatch? How far does it go? Am I a bitch for doing what I did? Discuss, NOW!

Umm... honor? It's Deathmatch dude... the object is to kill the opponent while not getting killed yourself. That includes killing him when he is not looking at you or collecting health and powerups whenever you damn well please.

Pretty much what I thought. Initially we were fooling around in the match, then he started shooting me so I shot him. Then he did it _again_ so I killed him. Then he would complain whenever I killed him with my weapons while he was trying to camp the shield spawn or whatever. Meh.

Smart people pull out their shields when they're losing the fight. Honor? pffffffffffffff.

sounds like your friend might like to try jedi knight sabers 1vs1 without using the force.
He already has. He hosts free for all games on Xbox live and kicks people for using weapons\the force. When I asked why he didn't do sabers only:
"Nobody joins saber only games."

Pfft indeed.

Rules of engagement & honour ...

JaFO's 5 commandments of multiplayer-games :
  • Thou shalt not use map- or game-bugs to your advantage
  • Thou shalt not cheat
  • Thou shalt respect thy enemies as thou wouldst respect thy teammates
  • Thou shalt not spawncamp or otherwise harass an obviously unskilled opponent
  • Thou shalt not enforce rules by hand that can be set by mutators or gamerules

Additional :
Any unfriendly that walks into my line of fire is a target ...

OMG some people suk. In a one on one situation there are rules.
-One of them is don't shoot them in the back how fuc*ing lame is that.
-Don't kill them as soon as they spawn let them grab a weapon unless you're a useless n00b with no skill.
-Don't be a flack spamming a**monkey even if you are a n00b.
-ETC.
But most of these unspoken rules are usually only practiced by people of respect and experience anyways.
If it's two n00bs, pfft they can do whatever they want, shoot your opponet in the back, spam flack down the hallway who cares...it's just two n00bs.

So to answer your question, damn straight there should be honor in a game if not well, then I guess you just don't give a sh*t and that's your choice so make it and enjoy.

What's so bad about (flak)-spamming ???
They're going to run out of ammo if they're not smart ... if you're so stupid as to walk into the spam and die then I really wonder who's got the skills.

I hadn't thought of that (because its rarely an issue with me), but yeah, IF YOU KEEP WINNING WITHOUT HAVING TO TRY, FIND ANOTHER SERVER, or give yourself a handicap. I was playing a 1on1 on FragBU with a guy who had obvsiously better weapon skills than me, so he used the shield-gun the whole match. And naturally I kicked his ass. I'm not that lame. The point is he made it fun for both of us, and helped us both with specific skills. Thats pretty honorable.

Otherwise, my only codes of honor are:

Don't whine and accuse people of cheating, at least until you've spectated them. I have encountered aimbots, and it sucks. And I've also encountered players with superb tactics who've been accused of aimbotting. Check first if you're suspicious.

Don't brag about you're awesome skills (unless you're in last place). Nobody cares and you will annoy them.

(in team games): Don't switch teams or quit right before the game ends because you are losing. That is unbelievably cowardly and lame.

do you have a bind for "i'm behind you, turn around" or do you just follow them around until they notice?

got a bind for "dont shoot me yet, get a better weapon first" too?

you have something against people using effective weapons against you? then i'm curious why you have the "dont shoot me yet, get a better weapons first" bind

you must have a misguided notion on who players of respect and experience are. go play with a few of the top clans, they'll shoot you in the back without hesitation. either that or they're taking it easy on you cause they want at least a little challenge

i would find it to be quite disrespectful if someone took it easy on me. if you're not shooting me when you obviously could, then thats not fair to me, because i'm not going to learn otherwise. if you truly respect a player, you'll play your best against them.

I wouldn't even comment on a real cheater if I'd seen one, because that might make him aware that his crack has been spotted.
Such accusations also tend to ruin the atmosphere of the game for the rest of the players.

Just inform the admin and get out of the server or totally ignore the bastard and act like he's not even there ... (easier said then done, but at least he can't brag about his 1337 h4x0r-skillz that way)

Heh, I was playing NeoTokyo last night and one of the first thing I noticed was "I tk everyone who uses a shotgun"

...

So it was apparently established that noone was to use it because it's overpowered, but to keep the already stressed atmosphere on this only full NT server peacful I abided by it... I recently found out that what I thought was a sniper rifle actually was a (not too precise) assault rifle with zoom, which can kick ass too.

Of course I was a bit pissed when a member of the other team started using the shotgun and they didn't seem too concerned anymore. We won anyway. :D

Off course
Hmm...most etiquette rules have been said (no cheating, no spawn killing, respect for others,...), but let me add this one:
-no type killing
-don't complain if others type kill you ;) (strange, eh? And yet I still type stuff; it makes the game more fun for me)
Otherwise, everything is ok in deathmatch. It's all a part of the gametype, so how can one strategy be 'honourfull' and another be 'non-honourfull'? Learning how to play 1 on 1 deathmatch includes learning how to deal with these things.

Like Huggybear said: always check your back. Try turning the music off, and change 'bPlayOwnFootsteps' in user.ini to 'False' (I don't know if this setting is available in Unreal, though). That way you can at least hear where your opponent is.
RLD said:

Admitted, Unreal doesn't have the 2 second spawn protection or a shieldgun to protect you. If you're spawning right next to your opponent, you just have bad luck. Don't complain: it could happen to you just as well.
If you're not spawning right next to him/her, you better be carefull when picking up that weapon. Dodge back as soon as you hear that rocket sound, since he/she will aim at that weapon in front of you. Try to outrun your opponent until it's safe enough to pick up weapons/items
RLD said:

Did you ever tried flak spamming in a duel against a masterfull or higher bot (or the unreal equivalent of that bot)? It won't work since the bot simply dodges away from it...just like a lot of the good players. In fact, it's bad because it betrays your position (very important in 1 on 1), and depletes your ammo fast. That's why you shouldn't do this, not because it 'has no honour'.

The definition of a n00b is IMO 'a player who doesn't know how to play the game'. N00bs can, by definition, never win a fight from a decent player, no matter what kind of strategies he/she uses (well...unless they're cheating, of course  ).

Silly unwritten nOOb rules. You're supposed to spread FEAR AND OWNAGE. Next time I play 1v1 and suddenly feel like going out for a coffee, I'll just park myself facing a corner, because shooting players in the back is "OMG fu*c*k**ing laem si that!".

I prefer not to restrict myself or my opponent with rules like this.
