With my Radeon 9600 Pro, I can play the demo at maxed-out settings and resoution with no problem at all. I loved Halo on the X-Box, and the PC version's even better, although I find that I keep wasting grenades by trying to right-click for iron sights...

The plasma pistol, to my surprise, is quickly proving more effective than the assault rifle or the plasma rifle...the best way I've found to engage a Hunter is to pin him with a burst of quick semiauto plaspistol shots, then stick a plasma grenade on him. Two grenades, bye-bye Hunter.

So basically, in order to run Halo, you need the latest and greatest in PC hardware. I care so much about my hardware, I can't even remember what I have. A AMD 1700+ or so, a Geforce FX 5200 I think, and 512 ram. I think the Geforce FX is the weak link. I feel it is not worth it paying more than $100 for a video card, no matter what.

..to make it look like the two year old game it is.

SaraP, assuming that the conversion was done properly and everything was optimized for the PC then you might be right. But I wouldn't put too much faith in that theory..

Hm, I might get a chance to give the game a testrun on an old P3 866mhz with a GF3 tomorrow. Could be interesting.

My XBox can get away with running Halo on a GF3 equivalent card because it's only displaying it at TV resolution.

It can get away with all sorts of oooogliness you'd notice very quickly on a PC and still can see on a TV if you look closely.

Also consider that a PC is running a full featured OS as well as DirectX and the game. The XBox is running an OS designed for running DirectX games and that's about it.

Are hunters the big guys with the fuel rod guns?

Get close, keep strafing and aim for the bit that spurts orange blood when you shoot it. Pistol works nice for that but assault rifle works fine.

It should run really well, its just a bad conversion. Don't get confused into thinking a 1.4 gig PC with a Geforce 4 shouldnt be able to play this game at a decent frame rate. BAD CONVERSION!!!! :)

well if that's the case..that's really bad. Halo was originally designed for PC's. Infact if my memory serves, the original footage of it was being played/rendered on a (what must be now outdated) Mac.

BTW. Fileplanet's only good for one thing. Looking up the filename so you can run a search for it on www.filemirrors.com :p

True. However, the point is you don't need an over-the-top uber system as some people have claimed.

You do if you want the game to look more than butt-ugly. Sure, I could get a good framerate if I turn down the detail and resolution, but then the game would look ten times worse than an Unreal or Lithtech engine game, and still not run as well.

Ah well... Halo's dull, anyway. If anyone needs me, I'll be playing Tron.

I finally got the Halo-trial as well ... and boy does it manage to look like a 5 year old game that's designed to play on a Pentium 5 ... :(

I can bloody well run UT'03 at near 'holy ****' detail @ 1024x768 on my system. Altough it's not 'playable' on levels like Phobos2 even the 'medium' setting gets me 40 fps average.

Halo otoh starts to stutter as soon as more than one enemy starts shooting.
And for some reason it wouldn't map the keys like it should. At least the game kept telling me to press +axis3 to get into/out of the warthog and it insisted on swapping out my weapons every time I sort of happened to walk over one.

Just graphics-wise the level-design in the demo is as plain and un-interesting as it gets. So why does the bloody thing not move like it should ???

Even the recent test on Anandtech showed that the mighty 9800XT could barely reach 30 fps ... *ouch*

I was really looking forward to playing Halo on my PC, but it sounds like Gearbox well and truly ballsed it up.

Very little new stuff, directly ported levels and crappy optimisation.

At one point I was actually excited to hear that Gearbox were doing the PC version. I envisaged a sort of "directors cut" version that put back some of what I assumed they'd taken out to get the game onto XBox and took out some of the less than shining moments that marred the XBox version.

I think I will just wait for Halo2.

Speaking of games that are drab on PC but shiny on XBox, anyone seen the alcatraz demo of Rainbow Six 3 (think "The Rock")?

The Splinter Cell lighting and Night Vision modes are truly lovely. The reflex sight views and rejigged models are also very nice touches. Wonder if they'll patch it all into the PC version?

Rainbow Six 3 != Raven Shield

RS3 is a special version made for the XBox, it's more action oriented.

I have the box that i bought right in front of me. It reads :"

Tom Clancy's
Rainbow Six 3
RAVEN SHIELD

Being anal without adding anything to the discussion is already bad, but being anal without adding to the discussion and being wrong at the same time is as lame as it gets.

Freon probably should have said :
'Rainbow Six 3' for the Xbox is not the same game as 'Rainbow Six 3 : Raven Shield' for the pc.
IIRC it also has a different storyline ...

Halo uses a checkpoint system, but the checkpoints are all a minute or two apart. Personally, I prefer their system, because games are too easy when you can duck, quicksave, stand and fire, duck, quicksave, get shot, quickload, etc.

I know that most games really screw up with their checkpoints and make gamers replay 20 minute chunks over and over again (Oni comes to mind) but Halo simply saves between little skirmishes. When I played the Xbox, I don't remember ever having to replay more than a minute or two, and minute or two is spent fighting; instead of walking around and getting keys again.
