The best rifle I found was the M1 (Which is called "This Machine").
Does a lot of damage, and works pretty good at both long and close range.

I kept the Hunting Shotgun as a backup. The automatic reload and weapon switching suck though.

The assault rifle (M16) and sharpshooter rifle (HK416?) are seriously underpowered btw. One shot from the M1 == ~10 shots from the M16 ... Meh ...

Haven't seen this one in New Vegas yet.

Concerning the disbalance between the weapons (ain't got the M1 rifle yet, but working on it) the main cause seems to be the way damage resistance is done. The damage directly influences the ammount soaked up by armor and hence the M16 (20 nominal damage) will fare much worse than the M1 (65 nominal damage). Then again said M1 makes the 3rd place in damage for rifles (only brush gun and anti material do more), so it's supposed to be powerful.

I did some fiend hunting yesterday and got most of them with a varmint rifle (a lousy 18 nominal damage) on sneak, so the game at least favors the tactical approach - which is why most of my characters have at least decent sneak skills.

I don't remember it from the first game though ...

Arma 2 is good in some ways. Problems are the graphics suck, the maps are bland, flight simulation is a joke, movement feels like a drunk sailor, weapons need a lot of tweaking, your character is a marathon runner who can run for miles, just too many problems to list. Other than that, its a start. I personally wish a flight sim company like DCS would look into incorporating FPS into something like Black Shark. That would be interesting.

Today's games don't necessarily suck compared to what I grew up playing, but I just don't really care about playing games anymore, unless it's at a party, or something super chill. Save for the occasional impulse purchase on Steam when something's like 75% off (Arkham Asylum), I've basically stopped buying them. For a while I was getting into flight sims (DCS, IL-2) but given how drained I am after work and the gym and rock climbing and stuff, I don't feel like doing complex or twitchy gaming in the evening. Kicking back and playing Boom Blox is more my gaming speed, these days.
