What is the best single shot rifle in this game? Another sniper? I'm a fan of manual rifle aiming.

EDIT: 1-0 key-tag weapons!
Trying now.
Hunting Rifles are pretty good (0.3 spread) but hands-down the best are both Ol' Painless and Lincoln's Repeater, which have a spread of 0. Ol' Painless takes standard .32 Ammo, but Lincoln's Repeater uses Magnum Rounds.
  • Ol' Painless is in Dave's Safe in the Republic of Dave. You'll need to pickpocket the key from Dave to open it. If you get someone else elected in the mini-quest, you'll get the key as a reward, as well.
  • Lincoln's Repeater is in the Museum of American History's offices.
Both can be repaired with standard Hunting Rifles.

There's also Sniper Rifles, including two unique variants, but I find them crap, to be honest. The aim is horrible, the range is far less than it should be, Sniper ammo is a bit rarer and these things are more fragile than glass. Finally, there's the Gauss Rifle, but you'll only get that if you have the Operation: Anchorage DLC.

I just picked up Eugene from Brick earlier. Stupid bitch likes to fire at things with her big gun, but apparently 2 super mutant masters and a normal grunt are too much for her. 90+ damage maxed out, I will put it to good use.

Crap DP! I've just watched the video to get to the Lincoln's Repeater, and I've been there once wandering around. Can't believe I missed it, I probably even mouse-over it's case once.

My favourite single shot weapon is the Blackhawk, a unique Scoped .44 Magnum. It deals an extreme amount of damage. It can instantly kill most enemies with a single critical hit headshot, which works even better if coupled with sneaking. :D

If she died during that quest, you can even get a second one from Reilly afterward as your reward. (She offers you Eugene or Ranger Combat Armor.)

At least, you could in Patch 1.0.0.15... not sure about 1.1.0.35. :p

A lot of Lincoln's stuff is easy to miss. Keep your eyes open.

Blackhawk isn't bad, but it does have a spread of 0.3, unlike Lincoln's Repeater which has 0. Hunting Rifles are easier to come by than Magnums, as well, and it does have more HP than the Blackhawk. It also uses less AP in VATS (25 vs. 32) so really Lincoln's Repeater is probably the better choice.

But hey, if you like playing Dirty Harry, I'm not gonna stop you. I don't feel that lucky. :p

I just got in Paradise last night, the guy with the alien-like gun was like "Yeah, you out of a vault or what? It's Paradise Falls here, we slavers"

Then I went "fo realz?" and gun blazed the whole camp. The quest is just retarded, you get the quest by getting the kids out of the cage, then they said "We wait you southwest PF" I went searching way too far and couldn't find them. Then after getting inside Littlelamp or whatever it is called, I tried to find the dialogue option where I tell the kid about me rescuing Squirrel and who the hell else (silly names).

You normally would obtain the quest from there, so he told me about them getting slaved in paradise falls. So yeah, obviously the objective "Find entrance to paradise falls is extremely inappropriate when you ALREADY HAVE gun blazed the whole ****ing camp. Then I found the kids just RIGHT next to the camp southwest, like I said I searched way too far.

Now the quest is gone, I have no rewards and well, the kid still tells me to **** out the city.

LOL.

Lincoln's repeater is one of my favorite weapons. Also, I happened to find it while doing the mission to get the ex-slaves into Lincoln's memorial, so it was especially satisfying to kill the slavers with Lincoln's gun. Great stuff. It's probably the best weapon in the game for long range as it does massive damage and is freakishly accurate. That I can fix it with regular hunting rifles (which are all over the place) really, really helps.

The Blackhawk does more damage than Linc's Repeater and I never let mine degrade below 50 DMG. Repairing it isn't a problem as I seem to come across Magnum .44's quite often. I also have like seven or eight of them stashed my house. Just in case. I get three shots in VATS with a full AP meter, which is always sufficient to till any enemy, except Behemoths. The 0.3 spread doesn't make much difference imo, as I usually hit nine out of ten shots. Ammo for it isn't so hard to come by either, mine has something like 1000 rounds for it atm, give or take. And I should probably mention that I have pretty high Luck, as well as the Scrounger perk, which obviously helps. :D

Yeah I just got the boy, what I like is the damage, but above all, 0.00 spread. If your aim is good - the shot is good. BTW did I mention the car explosions are ****ingly awesome?

Yes... by 5. 50 for Lincoln's Repeater, 55 for Blackhawk. Lincoln's Repeater also holds 2 1/2x as much ammo, 15 to the Blackhawk's 6, and only weighs one pound more. You're trading in 5 more points of damage and slightly less weight for higher AP use, lower capacity, less item durability, and a bit of spread. All other stats between the guns are identical. (They both do 2x damage on a sneak crit, for example.)

Admittingly, you can fire the Blackhawk faster than Lincoln's Repeater, but if your aim is sniping, you'll want something with as little spread and as much punch as possible. Both those guns serve me well. I tend to keep Ol' Painless for my "softer" targets (Raiders, etc) and when I need to take down a Super Mutant or something worth more immediate attention, I pull Lincoln's Repeater out and make it my distance peacemaker.

As for me, I really need to finish up Operation: Anchorage...
...because you get a lot of the stuff that was usable in the simulation outside of it, when you unlock the vault by completing the simulation, including the Gauss Rifle.
100 Damage, 5x Crit. 1500 HP. Nuff said. :D

Its only real downsides is that it's a one-shot weapon - you have to reload after every shot. And it (may) chew through ammo faster than the other Energy Weapons - it uses MF cells, but I'm not sure if it uses more than one unit per shot.

One shot per MF Cell, and once you use up the initial ammo, that's it.

I really love the Chinese Stealth Armor. It may not be all that strong, but it sure beats Stealth Boys.

My Blackhawk actually does 58. :D
You've probably got perks that boost the damage up a bit. 55 is the maximum value without perks and perfect condition. Lincoln's Repeater would probably be 53 or so if my guesstimate is correct.

Still, the likelihood you'll notice the extra damage is pretty small. And you trade off some pretty big stuff in exchange for the slight extra damage and faster ROF. :p

ARG. **** you fallout 3. just finished the anchorage expansion and it was fun. Well, I was only to the point in the main quest where I needed to go to vault 87, so I go to the land of children place. Only I couldn't get anyone to talk about Vault 87. I look at my tasks and even though I never got the back door opened, the quest in which I needed to get to vault 87 was faded out, like I had completed it, even though the last task was unchecked. So yeah, I couldn't continue on, and I had to reload an earlier save. I guess I'll re-do operation anchorage afterwards, this time making sure to get all the briefcases.

annoying.

Anchorage is boring so far. I expected the faction would actually move you there, but no. It's a ****ing simulation. Takes away the purpose of getting your gear, feels like you're starting over again in a very boring environment you just really don't give a crap about. The sniper they lend you is terrible, even by aiming directly at your target (in the head) the shot miss. I end up just using the Chinese rifle or Silenced pistol.

Meh.
Now give me back my .44 rifle, yawn.
I guess I used VATS like 20-ish times total in this game.

Read what? The conversations? Yes I did. They kept telling about me having the pip boy and how I could serve for the sim. What do you mean? If there's more after the simulation I guess I'll just try to make past it, otherwise, **** off. I just got insta-bored.

And I finished the game BTW.

He means read the description of the download. They make no mistake about it that it's a simulation.

From the release
Description:

Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. Gain access to unique armor, weapons, and exotic gadgets while you build and command interactive Strike Teams to win the battle and defeat the Chinese base.

I meant read about Operation Anchorage before downloading it. It was very clearly stated as being a simulation.

What? The Gauss Rifle is awesome. I can actually hit headshots with it unlike the other sniper rifles outside of VATS. Your aim just plain sucks.
Also, you do get some of the swag from the simulation for completing the simulation.
