Unfortunately a lot of innovative games are in the Indie or Small Dev camps and too many gamers today have "Sixty-Dollar Syndrome" where if a game isn't nearly $60, it isn't worth playing
This is really not as bad on PC. I'm seeing more and more people that just aren't willing to spend $50-$60 on a game. Indie games are pretty attractive, especially on sale :p I almost never buy any game for full retail price anymore.

Question is how many smalldev/indie releases selling for $20 or less with a MP(or MP focus) end up with a sizable community?

A sizable playing community? Not that many :) But to be fair, most $60 games with MP don't end up with a sizable online community either. :)

True, but those big budget games tend to get much larger communities that last longer
Games like MNC and S8P are both barely hanging onto what players they have, S8P getting a recent boost due to an insane sale price recently.
I wouldn't be surprised if either of those communities barely had 100 people playing after XMas, if not before

For a game that costs $10-$20 it doesn't bother me if the MP component of the game is dead (if there's a SP component).

For multiplayer specifically, holding onto the players is less of a problem than getting them in the first place. At least in my experience, if I start a game up and see no one else playing MP, chances are I won't look at it again. Of course, "How can we get more people playing multiplayer on my title?" is a question that'd be worth boatloads of money if anyone had any sort of reliable answer.

innovation only happens when individuals in the industry take risks... hopefully its time for Epic to take some 'risks' and go all old school on us :)

Take risks and go all old school? Seems like a bit of a contradiction, no?

Also if they balanced Sniper/Assassin

I think they're working on a big update if I'm reading the forums right. Basically they're updating to the latest Unreal Engine which is why there's been no news out of them lately. They'll be at PAX Prime this week so hopefully there will be some news from them then.

I think the other thing that hurt them is the design looks really close to TF2 so people probably passed off on it as a low-budget TF2 wanna-be. If they could get some better messaging on this facet they probably would do better.

Probably, they do have a new banner on the forum: http://i.imgur.com/eufIo.jpg (uploaded to Imgur as Uber tends to recycle the banner url)
But yea, engine update and PAX have eaten up a lot of their time.

At first I too thought it was just a TF2 knockoff, but imo it is so much more fun than TF2
When it launched back in Jan Steam had it on sale fir $5 and I was looking for something new to play. It was either MNC or some new cheap shooter. Glad I went with MNC as I heard the shooter died off rather quickly
Did they release the editor update yet?
No :|
Wish they would as I'd try to figure out UE3 map editing and tweak the hell out of Tully's

I wonder what they think of the news that HP is dropping the PC market? Did they have this knowledge before deciding to focus on PC again?

Not that HP is any great gaming market player, but they're touting this as indicative of a trend that PC's are on their way out.

Personally I disagree, and think there is going to remain a significant PC market especially for gamers, developers etc. These corporate morons seem to believe that everyone is an end user who only does stuff like check their email and play farmville.

If major PC vendors such as HP exit, all it does is open up the potential for smaller specialty companies to make a killing imo. We might actually see a growth in PC gaming if custom builds become more common and prefab machines less.

HP is also dropping their tablet segment as well. That's not PC is dying, that's "we don't know what the fuck we're doing anymore as a company"

Yeah, HP is doing the same thing IBM did a long time ago. It shows nothing more than their uncertainty as a company.
