Oh, like Hideo Kojima isn't the biggest hack on the planet. Doing the same crap over and over again. The MGS games simply movies with a few interactive bits, nothing more.

It's time for the industry to grow beyond making clones of games we've been playing already for 10 years and develop some meaningful *gasp* ORIGINAL ideas.

I agree 100% with this. I would rather see someone like Cliff get 50 of emails critical of his work than 50 fanboys kissing his ass all day.

The problem is that developers would go broke if they tried to do this because publishers are no longer willing to take a chance on something new. Publishers wont respond to something original until games like UT2004, Call of Duty and Quake 4 stop selling.

If you want original games you have to look towards the independent developers. Games like Gish and Darwinia have done well while Savage: The Battle for Newerth tanked despite being a great example of original and entertaining gameplay.

I've spent more money on independent titles the past few months than anything else. In fact I just picked up Minions of Mirth (http://www.prairiegames.com/) today for $25 bucks which is a steal. If you are an RPG fan and want the chance to play a game similar to EQ/Morrowind in scope check it out. It even allows you to run your own persistent world with your own original content.

The author of the email used some horrible examples but I can totally agree with the concept of what he was trying to say.

Sounds like a pathetic nerd thats jealous of all the attention Gears of War is getting. He has no life, he'll never have sex, and he'll die lonely in his underwear while playing Yu-Gi-Oh in his late 60's. I pity him.

so you use an example of a game that is similar to other games, to back up your point, then say the author of the email used horrible examples??

Some independent games are good though, I'll give you that.

What !?
You woke me up for this?

First of all, people do not want original game concepts.. nobody is waiting for a game like the Nintendo DS toilet paper game (figure that one out for yourself). People want games that are fun to play and that offer new things (instead of the usualy). Well as for GoW, the stuff I heard so far is actually quite interesting. Ofcourse I haven't been able to play it, but it does sound interesting, that's at least something.
As for my personal taste, I wouldn't mind more Adventure\Action games.

But still... hate mail is just an other form of a viagra email. It's about size, ego size. As a wise man once said: Do not feed the trolls.

I should have explained better. Similar in scope when it comes to size of game world and RPG features, just trying to compare it to something to give an idea of what it's about. Had I just said "it's an RPG" and left it at that it wouldn't have given you an idea of the type/style of RPG.

Using Metal Gear Solid 4 (4!!!) was a stupid example for the author to use. The fourth in a series and not much different than the previous games. He was pissing and moaning about being original and then used that as his example. He also turned it into a personal attack which was silly. He could have explained himself better but instead comes across as an ass.

I personally think it's okay to do a sequel if the game is great but once you venture into the 4th, 5th and 6th version of what is essentially the same game then it gets old. I mean, that's like Rocky V territory. :)

I want a game that's fun to play but I am tired of playing the same game over and over again which is what it feels like with the Quake/UT series. I'd rather have new content with fun gameplay than see Xan, Liandri and all of that crap rolled out to us again in what will essentially be an updated version of UT2004. At least they are working on GoW which looks like it'll be what I am looking for.

Either way, an interesting topic and I appreciate the reply.

The guy has a point, but he says so much stupid crap it makes it all sound retarded. Every single game that comes out of Japan is either dancing techno insanity or some ridiculous fantasy epic about a child waking up with amnesia. Or something, anything, with Mario slapped on.

But let's not kid ourselves. Cliff has become the new show pony for the game industry. The current replacement for John Romero. He and Molyneux are in the same boat as far as I'm concerned. We're no longer in an era where one guy can take so much credit for a game. The further they distance themselves from reality the sooner a big screwup will bury them forever.

I wish him and the rest of Epic all the best. Really bad screwups happen and the fans eventually turn. It's inevitable. I can't be the only one to see them quietly turning their backs on the PC fanbase.

With a series like UT you have alot of room, especially room to take risks. Look at Ut2003? It wasn't the greatest game of all time, but it WAS a risky game.

Innovation is invisible today. Even games like Gish and Darwinia only bring very simple additions to their respective genres. In fact, alot of the things they DO bring are frivolous and add nothing to the gameplay (for example, the lighting system in Gish). Even Savage wasn't anything THAT new. What was great about savage was the sze of it's development team and their budget, more than that the game was really innovative.

IMO, the problem is that too many publishers OWN the developers that work for them. What that means is that the publisher has 100% control over what the developer does, including when their product is released. Publishers are the ones not willing to take risks. There are too few developers like Epic and Valve that have as much room as they want to leave publishers, and sign on with other publishers at will, and ultimately that lack of freedom is what is killing innovation in the industry.

Anyone that ever writes hatemail is just as stupid or even more stupid than they're claiming the person they are flaming to be.

"The time for praising games like Unreal, Quake, Call of Duty, Halo, and countless other clones of innovations from 1996 is -or should be- over. I sincerely hope you have read this through because you need to know that you should be ashamed to be showing Gears of War in the same building that something like Metal Gear Solid 4 is shown, and should be further shamed in being placed at a competitive level with Hideo Kojima. Shame on you for wasting the wonderful gift you've been given." -Dip****

HAHAHA does this pin head not realize what hes sayin?!?! -Metal Gear Solid 4- WTF!?!?!? OMG THATS SO ORIGINAL! The first game dates back past 96. what is this moron talking about? He acts as if all the talent is in japanese blood. More remakes have come from them than any other country or culture.

Lmao, the person who wrote that mail is a idiot, it sounds like he might be one of those jealous developers who is so crap at their job that they cannot get any recognition, as far as im concerned i've always enjoyed the unreal series and in my eyes it is miles better than games like quake, i dunno why i think that but the constant cratering in q3:arena made me scream in frustration(it was so easy to crater even if you didnt fall from a high place)

may death come upon this person with big pointy teeth(monty python)

I agree with the quote above. and when UT or UT2004 gets boring, it can't because it can be modded into any other type of game, theres even an RPG for UT2004. so i think this crappy developer took to much of his drugs. and can't deal with his crappyness

Maybe this guy wants Epic to die so he's trying hopelessly to convince Cliffy to make a kooky game (like the Nintendo DS toilet paper game) and drive the company into the ground... The fact is that sequels and rehashes sell, so companies will keep making them. If he dont like it he should not buy those games (like MGS4!!), go buy the DS toilet paper game instead. He shouldnt blame the game makers, he should blame the gaming community for lapping it up.

Or maybe that's the same guy who wrote the "Descibe" (yes, missing "r" and no such word, he meant "unsubscribe") letter three or four years ago to Electronic Gaming Monthly Magazine. Only that he took English classes this time!

Also, he's an idiot to pretty much think his on the J's side. Being an Asian myself admittedly, I don't like it when idiots think they're good samaritans start straining relationships between two things. More likely, he's on the I'm-pretending-to-be-a-hero-gamer-and-will-save-the-industry side where people like Jack Thompson stay in... and eventually die. UNREAL HAS NO RELATION WITH MGS OR THE FF-SERIES. They're both games, NO MORE and NO LESS. No competition between them, absolutely not.

You know guys, it pretty much sux when a person stands out of the crowd hating something just probably because too many people like it. People like those aren't bidding for "equality", they just pretend they're so good but actually aren't. In this case, this hate mail was probably just composed for the heck of it testing our (and the developers') patience experimenting on what type of response comes out. Guys, we shouldn't even waste our time posting about a dumb message of it IS dumb.

And one more thing: UT's redundance isn't an issue because mods come out continually anyway. UT desserves special credit as much as John Romero's Doom3D did because it's a benchmark of games, a trademark in history, a concrete pillar that can't be removed from the games industries' "skyscraper". Like, who's some kind of an idiot to say "quit praising UT and move on"? We can still KEEP praising UT and build more UT stuff and move on WITH UT. USkaarj was original. UnWheel was original. AirfightUT was original. And they all have "U" in them! Aren't they original enough? An RTS mod, a RACING mod, and a FLIGHT COMBAT SIMULATION mod which don't follow the tradition of UT in shoot-em-up first-person combat?
