Rambowjo : I think it's pretty stupid : he doesn't include a CD-key, but includes secuROM.

that + delayed digital distribution... <_<

so the screw pirates seems to be "hey customers, look what annoying things we put in, it sure should stop piracy..." but it doesn't ! even the argument of slowing down piracy isn't working since the pirated copy was out there before the game release date !

edit2: about the entire piracy deal, it's actually nice to see a big and respected developer simply say "screw the pirates" and hardly include any anti-piracy in the product. A serial key wouldn't have hurt though, but I guess they either believe in the community, or they simply think that the console sales will make up for any significant lost capital on the PC.
Hardly any anti-piracy? Borderlands? What?

Played for about an hour and a half tonight... a couple thoughts:

1) Better integration with Steam would be a nice bone to throw to PC players. Someone from Gearbox should get in touch with Epic and find out how to at least get achievements implemented and integrated.

If Gearbox can tie into the community/friends list to allow us to drop in on a hosted game without needing to get an invite through Gamespy that would be awesome.

2) Absolutely love the atmosphere of this game. Claptrap is the bastard love child of Wall-e and Gir. Beautiful.

3) It was not easy prying myself away at the end of the time I allocated to play tonight. This game is a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to playing single-player so I can soak in the environments and dialogue better.

On to the ugly:

1) Gamespy is still annoying as hell to setup. Between Gamespy login issues and realizing I needed to configure the router (as noted on the game's forums the game readme forgot to mention a 5th port: 28902 which you need to forward). Completely out of Gearbox's hands but I was utterly dumbfounded to find that UT3 authenticates on your GS nickname while Borderlands apparently authenticates on your unique nickname or something weird like that. Very bizarre and confusing.

2) I really dislike having crouch as a toggle. This drives me nuts in BioShock as well. Does anyone know of an ini tweak to changes this into a "hold to crouch" like most FPS games? Same with the sprint bind?

3) I'm not one to whine about this but it would be nice if there was some sort of visual indication that you missed an enemy because the hit check failed, and not because you weren't aiming at them. Maybe this is a bit on the nitpicky side, and probably me just not being used to the game yet.

4) While the interface is servicable with mouse+keyboard it still doesn't feel totally right. I know most of the reviews I saw harped on this and offered good feedback (especially the Rock, Paper, Shotgun review) so I'm not going to throw much out here other than a prayer this gets addressed in a patch.

EDIT:

5) I couldn't find an obvious way to drop ammo on the ground if I accidentally picked something up that a friend was using. Starting out this would be really handy or for long excursions away from the hub areas.

Played for a little, got to level 6. Initial impressions:

-First, agree with what shoptroll said.

-FOV is way off. I keep getting attacked from the side and below because I can't see, feels like I'm constantly staring down a tunnel. Some one posted a fix on [H] forums for a 90 FOV hotkey, haven't tried it myself yet.
http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1034817210&postcount=664

The FOV was giving me a headache, here are the adjustment instructions:

my documents\games\borderlands\willowgame\config\

open willowinput.ini
add
Bindings=(Name="F10",Command="FOV 90",Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False)
add it amongst the other bindings, change the fov to whatever you want and switch it by the corresponding keys

Before:
[SCREENSHOT]http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3098/borderlandsorigfov.jpg[/SCREENSHOT]
After:
[SCREENSHOT]http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/7130/borderlands90fov.jpg[/SCREENSHOT]

-Mouse sensitivity adjustment in game is awful. Even with Auto Aim turned off it still feels very "floaty" or there is a lot of mouse smoothing going on.

-I can't get my Gamespy ID I use in UT3 to work in Borderlands.

That said the art style and atmosphere of this game are great, looking forward to playing it more.

Agreed on all points, especially the horrible Gamespy integration. All I know is that Gamespy must offer developers a hell of a deal to entice them to use their crappy system.

The Multiplayer system feels so tacked on and terrible (which seems to be a trend with Gamespy powered games...) that anything they could do to improve it would be a godsend at this point. It took me an hour and a half to get it working, and it still didn't work in a sensible way (can't invite friends to private games but can to single player games...). Needless to say, Gamespy is STILL a POS.

Ammo is shared. If you pick up 5 rounds of sniper ammo, your friend gets 5 rounds of sniper ammo.

Over there
It took a while to get multiplayer worked out, but it was a lot of fun. Agreed about the mouse control to some extent. You should be able to turn off mouse smoothing in the INIs but that's a pretty poor solution.

I wish claptrap would ****ing die.

(can't invite friends to private games but can to single player games...)
I had the opposite experience. I couldn't invite people into a single player game, but was able to create a private game and invite people both to the lobby and to the game in progress.

Hear, hear. Gamespy integration seems weak and we had a lot of trouble getting a group game going at first. I played tonight with Haarg, Funkblast, and Capt Toilet. It was a lot of fun! It gets much more challenging with more people playing, rather than becoming a crap shoot. The enemies are a lot harder to kill, rather than there being more of them (at least I don't think there were more).

I'm playing as Brick and god damn the Berserker move is hilarious and awesome, and I just got a couple of rocket launchers. One of them fires three rockets and hooooooooooooly crap is it worth it for group play when it takes 3 of them to bring down some of the tougher guys.

I think I'll fire up a Hunter too because I enjoy sniping a lot. I think I need to quit WoW to play all these games I have piling up ;)

Yeah, people on the GBX forums were saying if you couldn't get the private games stuff to work to try the single player one... worked in my case but lame. Steamworks - it just works.

You have to turn your sensitivity all the way down to keep it from feeling floaty..after that you should be good to go. Bioshock had a similar problem.

What pisses me off to no end is that I cannot ****ing navigate the menus by clicking with the mouse button, I have to use page up and page down? What the **** Gearbox? It's especially dumb because Gearbox lead platforms all their games on the PC, so this should be a non issue.

People that are having port forwarding issues should read this: http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=77897

I'm on a campus network so this had been a non issue for me, but a lot of people seem to be having them.

Also, if you're not someone who likes replaying games several times while always trying to find new guns and make new characters to play, I have no idea why you bought this game. It's pretty much "Diablo with guns" so if you're not into the whole Game+ or loot hunting/character building genres I really have no idea why you are complaining.

Pretty much going to say I agree with most of the points above.

I have not had an issue with FOV, but the ini fix wouldn't hurt.

Only beef right now, online play... really had a tough time getting into games. should not have to open 5 ports to host a game online.

Plus after a long time this one game that is causing some slow down on my machine, time for an upgrade me thinks.

Overall the game is fun has hell.

Just defeated Nine Toes for the second time. Once with a party of friends as Mordecai and second time solo play with Brick.

....and he has three balls LMAO!

I am sure most of you are pretty high level but got Mordecai and Brick up to Level 7. Really digging Brick, ****ing took down Nine Toes in a seconds. A party of hunters on the other hand had some die and try gameplay at that part.

So yeah, I am going to keep playing but really wish online play is ironed out.

Oh and if you want me to join your game, my Gamespy ID is mozidesigner

Just spent my first 2 hours playing this game in SP as Brick. My spare time (what little I have outside of crunch) is officially forfeit. Am loving the looting and shooting, feels very stable and like I'm in control. I've got the game's settings cranked up to almost max, and this 3 year old PC is handling it beautifully. (well, except for DOF, that stuff hurt my eyes, so I turned it off)

I will lose so much time in this, especially in a bit when I'll try and invade people's games to have some coop fun.
TomWithTheWeather: you guys have done a kick-ass job. Thanks for the awesome game!

My initial thoughts

Borderlands is alot of fun and didn't turn into a borefest like I originally thought.

The multiplayer was a bitch to setup but once it was working it turned out to be quite hilarious

The 10-15 second freezing when accessing the server list is stupid

Claptrap is an annoying **** and needs to shutup

Why in the hell would you add gamespy integration? I had to create a new id since my UT3 one wouldn't work(I only use one password).

I don't need to be reminded every 5 minutes that your enemies level can be seen by aiming at them. I think I found out how to turn this off though.

Menu is great, but I found using the arrow keys was alot better than the mouse. Using the mouse to scroll left/right or up/down would always yield the opposite.

Mouse sensativity is borked, even on lower settings.

Love the atmosphere though and the art direction is very very good. Will keep playing this one for sure.

Here's the trick to getting your UT3 login to work

Login to Gamespy.com with your email you used to register for your UT3 account. This will prompt you to create a "unique nickname". Apparently when you create your UT3 account you just create a "nickname". UT3 keys off "nickname" for authentication, Borderlands uses the "unique nickname". I don't totally mind the gamespy stuff but this is probably the most confusing authentication system I've ever seen. If you're going to provide an authentication system for developers to integrate with, it shouldn't be completely asinine like this.

Didn't have a problem with FOV, I'm guessing it doesn't change if you're in widescreen resolution vs. 4:3?

So far game is good (or at least up to level 6 so far) but it just needs a touch of TLC :)

EDIT:
The Nine Toes introduction was awesome.
Go watch Invader Zim all you claptrap haters.

People are really complaining over GBX forums at the moment that the game is a console port all over. Some UI elements really can't hide the fact that most of the UI was primalary designed for controllers. Not mouse. However they still have the option of mouse UI in nearly every window. So it's not the biggest of deals, but still..

My biggest concern with the PC version really has to be the sort of optimization behind it. I had to turn off everything to lowest last night in order to make this damn awful framerate stuttering stop.

I don't understand why I have to go and entirely remove dynamic shadows when the X360 version has it fine. I'm guessing some INI tweaks could probably help, but still.. the fact is that my gpu and hardware is spot-on better than the X360. I just don't get it.

Actually this GPU is really making me dizzy.

so far i am actually enjoying it despite the following list, but there are a fair few annoyances.

claptrap for one i wish i could shoot 50 times over
toggle crouch with c is a little annoying
Driving controls are pissing me the **** off
i've had to put mouse sensitivity onto full and its still annoying me
i'm lv 13 and i keep finding weapons that are for 17-19 which is irritating because i have no place to store them and theyre filling up my backpack but i cant use them
the shooting physics are a mystery to me, theres no visual indicator of where my shots are landing, so i cant tell if i should be leading my sniper shots or not.
loading screens between areas are a downer :(

and lastly the missions so far have been a bit dull but hopefully that should pep up.

despite all that whining, its turning out to be more like fallout 3 should have been than fallout 3 was and im having a good time mostly. (except being a sniper in arena fights -_-)

Question about the port forwarding. When logged into my router, it asks for an IP address, along with the ports needing forwarding. Should this be my ip address, since people will be connecting to my computer in a sense, or is it something entirely different?
